Belmond La Samanna

Belmond La Samanna Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Easily the most luxurious resort in St. Martin, the 55-acre La Samanna resort brings tranquility to an otherwise tourist-filled island. Featuring two beautiful pools, an extensive wine cellar, a yoga and Pilates studio, a European-style spa, and the island's most pristine beach, this 81-room, eight-villa retreat is hard to beat. The vibe is about as fancy as it gets for St. Martin, so of course everything -- from the nightly rates to the dinners and spa treatments -- comes at a sky-high cost.
Le Petit Hotel

Le Petit Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Le Petit Hotel lives up to its name -- with only 10 rooms, the property certainly is small. Guests can expect a relaxing atmosphere, personalized, attentive service, and plenty of room to themselves. The rooms are spacious and sophisticated with full kitchens, modern bathrooms with rainfall showers, dining tables for four, and private oceanfront balconies. Other perks such as free Wi-Fi, a free continental breakfast, and a beachfront location help make Le Petit Hotel a top upscale choice in the popular Grand Case area. Due to its small size, the resort lacks some amenities that you’d find at a larger resort such as a fitness area and on-site dining, and there is no pool. Sister property Hotel L'Esplanade has a pool but no beach, while Grand Case Beach Club has both but its rooms are less luxurious.
Hotel L'Esplanade

Hotel L'Esplanade Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Hotel L’Esplanade is an upscale, 24-room boutique property tucked on a hillside overlooking the popular and lively Grand Case neighborhood of French St. Martin. The hotel is quiet and tranquil with Mediterranean architecture, tropical landscaping, and gorgeous views throughout. Each room has a balcony and full kitchen, and the units are spacious and sophisticated. The pool is scenic and lush with plenty of palm trees and loungers. The property is not located on the beach and due to its small size, lacks some of the amenities of a larger resort such as a fitness center or on-site eatery. Those who prefer a beachfront property in this caliber nearby should consider Le Petit Hotel.
Marquis Boutique Hotel & Spa

Marquis Boutique Hotel & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Marquis Boutique Hotel and Spa is a boutique hillside property overlooking the gorgeous mountainous Anse Marcel region. All 17 rooms are spacious and have paintings by local artist Francis Eck on the walls. Though the rooms aren't particularly luxurious they come with balconies and mountain views. Perks such as free Wi-Fi, an extensive room service menu, a small pool with a bar, and on-site spa services add to the hotel’s appeal. While the hotel's reasonably remote location ensures quiet and a sense of solitude, it may be a drawback for some. LOVE, another small boutique hotel, has a more central location on the beach in Grand Case and has similar amenities.
Palm Court Hotel

Palm Court Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This quiet, new age-style hotel in the peaceful Orient Bay beach community has just the basic features with 24 identical Junior Suites, a small pool, and bar/cafe (with strictly limited hours). But little details give the property something special: Lush grounds filled with cozy hammocks; a bohemian, colorful design scheme; and secure, gated entry create a distinct charm and sense of privacy.
Mary's Boon Beach Resort

Mary's Boon Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 37-room beach hotel along Simpson Bay is certainly no luxury resort -- rooms show wear and tear, the pool is untended, and extra features are few. But an amazing beachfront location, small spa, and lush grounds full of character make it almost impossible not to appreciate Mary's Boon. Some people may not appreciate, however, the thunderous sound of planes at the neighboring airport, but then again, the low rates are hard to beat.
Holland House Beach Hotel

Holland House Beach Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The stylish 54-room Holland House Beach Hotel might be missing a pool, spa, and fitness center, but its location in the middle of Philipsburg gives guests the best of everything else -- step out the front door, and you’ll find some of the island’s best shopping on Front Street. And just out the back door, Great Bay Beach and the Caribbean Sea await. Inside, spacious rooms are updated and tastefully designed. Take note: With a surrounding such as this, opting for a beach view is well worth the extra cost.
Alamanda Resort

Alamanda Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Alamanda Resort is a 42-room mid-range property with an unbeatable location in Orient Bay, an upscale community that has several hotels, restaurants, and one of the island’s best beaches. The resort isn’t located directly on the beach -- the sand is a two-minute walk across a quiet road; many rooms in the hotel have ocean views. The resort has a large pool, free Wi-Fi, and includes a continental breakfast in the room rate. The room furniture, however is basic and rustic, and the rooms look a bit tired. Guests might also want to also check out the Hotel La Plantation, which has similar rooms and a chic pool with a lounge-like setting, and it’s cheaper. Marquis Boutique Hotel in Anse Marcel has similar rooms for a cheaper rate, but they are not on the beach.
Bleu Emeraude

Bleu Emeraude Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Opened in 2009 and still gleaming, the intimate 11-room Bleu Emeraude sits along a peaceful crescent-shaped white sand beach, just a short walk away from the culinary mecca of Grand Case. Modern rooms are sleek with updated electronics, designer furnishings, and white-on-white decor that puts the focus on the stunning ocean views. However, the hotel sits on a particularly busy street and has virtually no amenities beyond the beautiful beach.
Horizon View Beach Hotel

Horizon View Beach Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

One of the cheapest options in St. Maarten, this 30-room hotel on Philipsburg’s Great Bay Beach certainly doesn’t roll out the red carpet. The entry through a dark corridor is unnerving, the rooms are old and musty, and an almost complete lack of amenities provide little enticement beyond budget-friendly prices. If money is less an issue, try the much nicer Holland House Beach Hotel next door -- the slightly higher rates are well worth it.
