Hotel Riu Palace St Martin

Hotel Riu Palace St Martin Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 258-room resort located in the mountainous and remote Anse Marcel region on the French side of St. Martin is one of the island's larger properties (though it's smaller than most Riu Palaces in other destinations). Features are extensive, including four restaurants, three bars, a huge infinity pool, a long, scenic beachfront, daily activities, and nightly entertainment, but some of the restaurants require standing in line for reservations, and the entertainment gets mixed reviews. The rooms have cheerful tropical style and are reasonably modern, if unmemorable for an upscale property. All in all, this is easily the island's nicest all-inclusive option -- the Sonesta Maho is larger and also features-packed, but its rooms are more dated.
The Villas at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina

The Villas at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Villas at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina, located in popular and beautiful Simpson Bay on the south (Dutch) side of the island, has access to adjacent sister property Simpson Bay Resort’s many amenities. The 83 Two-Bedroom Villas (each can be split up into a One-Bedroom Suite and Junior Suite) are housed in a large and commanding oceanside building on the resort’s property; each villa has a scenic balcony or patio with ocean views and most units have a full kitchen. There are a few small annoyances, like a fee to use the fitness center and a long check-in time, and it's worth noting that the more stylish renovated rooms at the main resort also have full kitchens -- the ones here, however, typically have better ocean views.
Simpson Bay Suites

Simpson Bay Suites Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 18-unit condo hotel in Simpson Bay offers some of St. Maarten's most affordable and spacious rooms. And on that strength alone it's a great choice for families who want plenty of space to stretch out and a full kitchen for homemade meals. Still, this place is cheap for a reason: minimal service, no pool, no restaurant, no fitness center, and no beach access. For a beachfront and more amenities at comparable prices, head to Mary's Boon Beach Resort.
Princess Heights

Princess Heights Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Perched on a dramatic hill above Dawn Beach, this 51-room condo property has jaw-dropping views. A rooftop pool and spacious balconies take advantage of the vistas, and full kitchens and pull-out couches are ideal for families or groups looking to save. There is no restaurant, bar, or spa, but Princess guests have easy access to the casino, beach, shops, and several dining options at the megaresort Westin next door.
Simpson Bay Resort & Marina

Simpson Bay Resort & Marina Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range resort in popular and beautiful Simpson Bay on the Dutch side is one of the best values on the island. It's enormous, especially for St. Maarten, with 342 rooms, six pools, four restaurants, and a long beach. Most of the rooms are stylish and modern (all rooms will be updated by 2016) and have full kitchens, king beds, flat-screen TVs, and memory foam mattresses. Although the resort is huge, it doesn’t have a big-box, cheesy feel. There are a few small annoyances, including a fee to use the fitness center, a long check-in time, and lukewarm showers at certain times of the day. Those willing to trade in-room kitchens for the option of an all-inclusive package should consider the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort.
Oyster Bay Beach Resort

Oyster Bay Beach Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Oyster Bay Beach Resort is a large, 182-room time-share property located on Dawn Beach on the Dutch side of St. Martin/St. Maarten. Rooms are modern and come in studio and one- or two-bedroom configurations, and many have kitchens. There have been past complaints of plumbing problems in some of the units. The upper-middle-range resort has on-site dining, a large activities desk, a gift shop, a fitness center, and daily entertainment. The infinity pool is a highlight with its attractive curved design and beautiful views of the ocean. Guests looking for a resort with a more personal feel might want to consider the smaller Alamanda Resort on Orient Bay or the Hotel L'Esplanade, near Grand Case.
Divi Little Bay Beach Resort

Divi Little Bay Beach Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range time-share resort is conveniently located on a semi-private peninsula just outside of Philipsburg. The resort is huge, with 235 rooms, three pools, four restaurants, shops and markets, and a long beach, among other amenities. Rooms are among the most stylish and modern available in this price range, and almost all have ocean views, although the decor is chain-like. Prices are typically a bit higher than at competing properties, such as the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina -- though Simpson Bay lacks Divi's rare optional all-inclusive package.
Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino Rating: 3.5 Pearls

By far the biggest resort in St. Maarten, this 534-room behemoth is a veritable village with two towers, two pools, three restaurants, the island's largest casino, direct beach access, and a 40-boutique shopping center. Most of the rooms have fresh, modern decor and balconies, though the expensive Wi-Fi is a bit excessive. The crowds can get big and even a bit boisterous. But for families and lively vacationers looking for a playground of a resort, the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino is a top choice.
The Azure Hotel

The Azure Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located on Simpson Bay in a residential neighborhood just south of the airport, the Azure Hotel is a small, intimate property with only eight rooms and plenty of natural beauty. The property is located directly on beautiful and scenic Simpson Bay with white sand and turquoise water. The small size of the property means that the beach is quiet and never crowded. The friendly owners live on-site, are always accessible, and provide guests with plenty of advice about the area. The buildings are on the older side and the rooms are fairly basic but well-maintained. The very reasonable rates, beachfront location, and personalized service make Azure Hotel an excellent value. However, there's no pool here -- those seeking a bigger property with more features may prefer the similarly priced Mary's Boon Beach Resort or Simpson Bay Resort & Marina.
Royal Islander Club La Plage

Royal Islander Club La Plage Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Location is key for the Royal Islander Club La Plage. It is one of the few properties situated directly on Maho Beach, one of the best and most popular beaches on the island, allowing guests enjoy turquoise blue water, white sand, and calm breezes. The hotel also has a huge, lively pool with palm trees, a bar, and a sandy area with loungers. The pool and the beach can both get crowded, however. Although the hotel has a lot to offer, it also has considerable drawbacks -- namely dated furniture in the rooms, a charge for Wi-Fi and parking, and lack of amenities on the property, such as a fitness or business center.
