Row NYC

Row NYC Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This massive, modern hotel located a block from Times Square was rebranded as the Row NYC in 2014. It's one of the best hotels for the price in this touristy area, and rooms have fresh, contemporary style (picture Euro Top platform beds with white bedding, and bright accent walls in red, yellow, orange, or green -- the colors of New York City traffic). Wi-Fi is free, modern technology amenities include iPod docks and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with HBO, and the elevators are fast (as they need to be at a 28-floor hotel with 1,300 rooms). For on-site dining, District M operates as a cafe during the day and opens as a pizza bar and cocktail lounge in the evening. Just know that Standard Rooms can be quite small, there are no coffeemakers, and the lobby can get quite crowded, especially during check-in.

Sanctuary Hotel

Sanctuary Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 115-room, boutique Sanctuary Hotel sits on a relatively quiet street near all of the action of Times Square. There's a nice foortop lounge called Heaven, serving up cocktails and French cuisine, and a fitness center is on the way. Its luxurious rooms and sexy open bathrooms are among the city's best, but the historic building has a few lingering quirks, and there's no spa or business center.

The Premier

The Premier Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale annex of the massive and generic Millennium Broadway hotel next door offers 125 large, quiet, and clean rooms and proximity to Times Square -- but not much else. A women-only floor has been discontinued, and the gym is shared with Millennium guests. All things considered, the Premier's prices are too high for what you get.

DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel New York City - Times Square

DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel New York City - Times Square Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The DoubleTree Suites may be one of the best hotel options for families in New York City. The big two-room suites all come with pull-out couches and either one king or two double beds; the latter can fit up to six people, a rarity in the area. And the location right on Times Square is as central as it gets for sightseeing. It's a big corporate hotel with trendy lobby decor and clean, generic rooms; features include a cool back-lit lobby bar, a modern fitness center, and extensive meeting space. Some rooms have excellent views of Times Square, others face the New York City skyline (with peeks of Central Park in the distance). Higher floors are quieter and have better views.

The Westin New York At Times Square

The Westin New York At Times Square Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This bustling, convention-focused, 863-room Westin comes with a prime Times Square location, a high-quality gym, a business center, a spa, a steakhouse, 24-hour room service, and enormous rooms with famously comfortable beds. But there are price gouges -- fees for Internet and gym access.

W New York Times Square

W New York Times Square Rating: 4.0 Pearls

If you've been to a W hotel anywhere in the world, you basically know the drill: A lively bar scene, funky design, solid in-house gym, friendly and attentive service, great beds -- and fairly expensive prices. The only difference: This 509-room property is in bustling, touristy Times Square.

Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel

Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

As with any Times Square hotel, guests pay a premium for location -- but at the Renaissance they also get to stay in an up-to-date hotel with a fun and extravagantly designed lobby and lounge area, attentive service, and comfortable beds. If you want proximity to the bustle of Times Square, this is a very solid choice.

InterContinental Times Square

InterContinental Times Square Rating: 4.0 Pearls

More refined than many of the chain hotels directly in Times Square, the InterContinental is ideal for those who want class and attentive service without being far from the sites and the bustle of Midtown West. A celebrity chef restaurant, 24-hour business center, easy access to 10 subways, and attractive rooms make this a good option, when prices aren't exorbitant.

The Muse - Kimpton

The Muse - Kimpton Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This boutique hotel is steps from the center of bustling Times Square but feels like a calm oasis. With stylish rooms and suites, a hip new wine bar, and a restaurant with a locally acclaimed chef -- plus a free wine hour each night -- the Muse is a great alternative to the mid-priced mega hotels that pervade the neighborhood.

The Chatwal

The Chatwal Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 76-room luxury hotel in a landmark building near Times Square evokes the glamorous 1920s. Rooms combine high quality linens and beds with playful 1920s touches like backgammon sets, custom playing cards, and desks that look like steamer trunks. A restaurant by Geoffrey Zakarian and a small, lovely spa are the hotel's stand-out features.
