Eaton Chelsea

Eaton Chelsea Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With 1,590 rooms, the upper-middle-range Eaton Chelsea is the largest hotel in Canada. The Family Fun Zone has a massive indoor pool complete with a water slide and an arts and crafts area resembling a kindergarten classroom. The on-site pub is a draw for adults, offering nightly entertainment that showcases local indie bands as well as jazz and blues ensembles. The 27th floor has an adults-only pool, E-Club Lounge with a gorgeous rooftop deck for Club Room guests, and an enormous glass-encased fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment. Although the rooms are bland and carpeting is a bit dated, all things told, the Eaton Chelsea is a great value, particularly for families, as the property goes above and beyond the call of duty to make kids feel special.

Holiday Inn Toronto Downtown Centre

Holiday Inn Toronto Downtown Centre Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Renovated in 2010 with a bright, modern overhaul to the rooms, lobby, and hallways, the three-pearl Holiday Inn Downtown Toronto Centre is nothing fancy. But it’s still a warm, welcoming property in a safe, convenient part of town just between the city’s two major shopping districts -- the Toronto Eaton Centre and Bloor-Yorkville area. Rooms (and even suites) are on the small side and thus not ideal for families planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel, but the pool with its outdoor patio offers a relaxing respite from downtown, as does the attached Caesar Spa. Virtually every hot spot in the city is within easy access and, for sports fans, the famous Maple Leaf Gardens is right next door. Compare rates at the nearby and enormous Eaton Chelsea for a bigger indoor pool.

Best Western Primrose Hotel Downtown-Toronto

Best Western Primrose Hotel Downtown-Toronto Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This mid-range chain located near the University of Toronto isn't luxurious, but it does offer large rooms at low prices. You'll be sharing the building with long-term residents, and the adjacent park can feel a little seedy at night, but the hotel is only a few blocks from the subway and within walking distance of some tourist attractions, such as Eaton Centre, the massive shopping complex. You may want to request a higher floor for better city views.

Bond Place Hotel

Bond Place Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 285-room Bond Place Hotel's sleek, minimalist rooms may be on the small side, but they're thoroughly modern, with big flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, light hardwood floors, and shiny marble bathrooms. The hotel is the Queen's Park and the University District, just north of the Financial District, and within walking distance of popular tourist attractions. But note that features are few -- just an espresso bar and a small fitness center.

Hotel Victoria

Hotel Victoria Rating: 3.0 Pearls

You'd never guess the Hotel Victoria's 56 cute rooms belong to a historic property: They're thoroughly modern, with 32-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. The stylish contemporary decor includes hardwood floors, blue-and-white bedding, and sleek black furniture, and the price is right -- but some rooms are small and dark.

Radisson Hotel Toronto East

Radisson Hotel Toronto East Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This large, quiet chain hotel is situated about 30 minutes from downtown Toronto and is geared toward guests with cars. The suburban location means it's more affordable than downtown hotels and the pool and peacefulness make it a good choice for visitors planning on driving everywhere. Rooms are stylish and comfortable for a mid-range hotel while the on-site restaurant and fitness center are nice perks. Still, some carpets and appliances need upgrading and the Wi-Fi is spotty.

The Strathcona Hotel

The Strathcona Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This eco-friendly, mid-range hotel sits in the heart of Downtown Toronto, blocks from shops, restaurants and popular sites. The rooms are small but clean, with light wood floors, minimalist contemporary decor, and ultra-comfy beds -- but rooms at the nearby Hotel Victoria are perhaps a tad more stylish, so it's worth comparing rates.

Suite Dreams Toronto Bed & Breakfast

Suite Dreams Toronto Bed & Breakfast Rating: 2.0 Pearls

Suite Dreams provides an intimate bed and breakfast experience inside a family home. This B&B has four suites, each with a private bathroom. It's a clean, cozy environment that's convenient to downtown Toronto. Breakfast is made to order and the prices here are better than many hotels in the area, but it lacks the privacy and amenities common to larger hotels.
