Westward Look Resort

Westward Look Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This renovated guest ranch is Tucson’s oldest resort and one of its most popular. Outdoor activities abound at the upscale property, which offers three saline pools, horseback riding and hiking trails, volleyball, basketball, and eight tennis courts -- but no golf course. Big rooms and two highly regarded restaurants overlook the serene mountains and city lights.

Arizona Inn

Arizona Inn Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The upscale Arizona Inn is one of the swankiest and most beloved boutique resorts in town. It is a historic property that retains its 1930s charm -- highlighted by antique-laden casitas and the elegant Dining Room -- while offering modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. The hotel is centrally located in midtown Tucson, yet beautifully manicured grounds with tennis courts and a pool create a feeling of peaceful seclusion. The Hacienda Del Sol offers similar amenities at a slightly lower price point.

The Lodge at Ventana Canyon

The Lodge at Ventana Canyon Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale resort offers a beautiful and serene setting in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, with just 50 units situated on 600 acres. Golf and tennis are the main attractions here, with two 18-hole courses that are considered among the best in Tucson, and 11 tennis courts. All units are large suites, and some offer stunning views of the nearby mountain range. Nightly resort fees, however, make some guests feel as though they are being nickel-and-dimed.

Omni Tucson National Resort

Omni Tucson National Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 4-pearl Omni Tucson National Resort has a beautiful, 650-acre desert setting west of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Golf is a major focus here, and one of the two 18-hole courses served as a PGA tournament course for over 40 years. The resort offers extensive amenities aside from golf, however, including a big pool, a 13,000-square-foot spa, three restaurants, and tennis. Mountain Vista Rooms have upscale southwestern decor, while the Haciendas are larger but farther from the lobby and in need of an update.

The Westin la Paloma Resort and Spa

The Westin la Paloma Resort and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The massive Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa sits in full view of the towering Santa Catalina Mountains, so dramatic vistas can be spied from practically everywhere on the sprawling property. In addition to beautiful surroundings, this upscale resort offers numerous amenities that include three golf courses, five pools, and 10 tennis courts. A massive, 177-foot waterslide attracts families, while cavernous meeting spaces draw convention groups and business travelers. The property is starting to show its age, however, especially in the guest rooms, which are big, but look somewhat dated.

JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa

JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Big, luxurious, and loaded with activities, the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa is a family- and business-friendly hotel located on the outskirts of west Tucson. It’s surrounded by striking desert landscapes, with good views all around. There’s golf, tennis, numerous pools and water features, shopping, restaurants, a massive lobby, hiking, and the big Hashani Spa. About the only things not available here are free in-room Wi-Fi and free parking, both of which can be had at the more affordable Westward Look Resort.

Radisson Suites Tucson

Radisson Suites Tucson Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The mid-range Radisson Suites Tucson is an aging hotel that nevertheless continues to offer solid value. It has big rooms, a large, attractive pool, and big landscaped courtyard. Rooms are what you'd expect from a budget property, with generic decor and some lingering old tube TVs -- but they do come with Radisson's Sleep Number beds, as well as microwaves and mini-fridges. Plus, most have separate living rooms and balconies. It's definitely worth comparing rates with the more upscale Westward Look Resort, which offers modern rooms, a gorgeous natural setting, and an impressive roster of activities.

Tanque Verde Ranch

Tanque Verde Ranch Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This rustic, all-inclusive resort is a quintessential Western dude ranch surrounded by miles of gorgeous mountains and desert. The property borders Saguaro National Park East, where guests can enjoy guided horseback rides, hiking, and mountain biking. There’s also swimming, communal ranch meals, and kids’ activities. Despite the resort's remote location, guests can stay plugged in with free Wi-Fi access. Guest rooms, however, lack TVs -- though for some, that only adds to the authenticity of the experience.

Best Western Plus Royal Sun Inn & Suites

Best Western Plus Royal Sun Inn & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Best Western Plus Royal Sun Inn & Suites completed a partial renovation in 2011 that built upon its strength as an affordable, centrally located hotel near downtown Tucson. The pool and fitness center are both big, and guests are treated to a free hot breakfast made to order at the Royal Sun Restaurant. However, thin walls transmit noise from adjacent rooms, and the park across the street attracts the homeless. The Comfort Suites at Sabino Canyon offers rooms at the same low price point.

Courtyard Tucson Williams Centre

Courtyard Tucson Williams Centre Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range, business-friendly Courtyard Tucson Williams Centre features updated guest rooms and common spaces with a modern look, including a large, comfortable lobby with business center, restaurant, and boarding pass print center. Nice perks include free Wi-Fi and self-parking, but the restaurant is pricey. Though not as modern, the Comfort Suites at Sabino Canyon offers rooms at a lower price point and includes a free breakfast.
