Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver

Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Shangri-La offers uber-luxe digs in Downtown Vancouver. Catering to the business traveler (mainly due to its location), the hotel's large rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with DVR, bedside controls for curtains and lights, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown. But the massive granite-and-marble bathrooms are the real highlight, featuring separate showers and tubs, as well as flat-screen TVs. The hotel also has a Jean-Georges restaurant and a hip spa, both of which are extremely pricey and only add to the hype.

Fairmont Pacific Rim

Fairmont Pacific Rim Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 377-room Fairmont is an upscale property on the northern edge of Downtown Vancouver, across the street from the Convention Center, and blocks to the harbor and public transport. The hotel has a modern, business-y vibe throughout, with clean lines and contemporary decor. Up-to-date amenities include an outstanding fitness center with a yoga studio, a rooftop heated pool open year-round, and a high-end spa. Spacious rooms feature Nespresso coffeemakers, plush name-brand beds, floor-to-ceiling windows (most boasting great views of the port and the mountains), flat-screen TVs and iPod docks.

Rosewood Hotel Georgia

Rosewood Hotel Georgia Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a historic property with a downtown Vancouver location. The 156 rooms and suites are luxurious and sophisticated, with plush furnishings, huge flat-screen TVs, and massive marble bathrooms with heated floors. Bathrooms are a real perk at this hotel, as all have huge walk-in showers and deep soaking tubs. Though the hotel first opened in 1927, it has modern touches including free Wi-Fi and iPod docks. Property highlights include a funky indoor pool, modern fitness center, rooftop alfresco lounge, and 24-hour room service. This pet-friendly property also has a central location for exploring downtown Vancouver's main attractions.

Fairmont Waterfront

Fairmont Waterfront Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Fairmont Waterfront is an upscale option in downtown Vancouver. The highlight of this hotel may be its location, as the name suggests, overlooking the harbor -- the pool and over half of the rooms feature beautiful water views. Room decor is contemporary and sophisticated, if a bit generic for such a high-end brand. Hotel features are numerous, including a small fitness center, year-round outdoor pool, and even an herb garden -- but massages are the only spa services available. The Fairmont Waterfront attracts families with its free kids' welcome gifts and bicycle rentals, and business travelers with its 24-hour room service, 24-hour business center, and meeting rooms. However, visitors may want to compare prices with the nearby Loden Hotel before booking.

Loden Hotel

Loden Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This 77-room luxury boutique has a modern, stylish feel, with a glam lobby (think: velvet couches, dark wood ceilings, and a stunning black-and-white granite fireplace surround) and a popular French bistro. The large, sleek rooms may be the highlight, with subtle earth tones, floor-to-ceiling windows, and decadent marble bathrooms, but the Downtown Vancouver location is convenient as well. The only real downsides are the extra fees for valet parking and Wi-Fi.

Carmana Plaza

Carmana Plaza Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 120-room Carmana Plaza offers no-frills, apartment-style rooms with kitchens and, in many cases, stunning views of the mountains or the sea through floor-to-ceiling windows. There is no restaurant on-site -- not even a breakfast area -- but the hotel is one block from the restaurants and cafes on lively Robson Street, and there's a grocery store across the road.

Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver

Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The service bonuses are delightful at the Metropolitan Hotel, from turndown service to free newspapers to morning limo rides in the hotel’s Jaguar. It doesn’t hurt that the two resident restaurants offer delicious and varied dishes (upscale Chinese; creative continental), and that the waterfront and downtown mall are within a five-minute walk. It might not be as shiny as the Four Seasons across the street, but the Met is a great upscale value for the neighborhood, especially for adult guests of the touring or business variety.

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This elegant 557-room hotel is housed in a historic building across from the Vancouver Art Gallery, in the heart of Downtown. The gorgeous indoor pool, the excellent Griffins Restaurant, and the big, modern fitness center make this property a reliable upscale pick. But some rooms are dated, bathrooms are nothing special, and guests might feel nickel-and-dimed due to the number of extra charges, including the fees for water bottles in the rooms, parking, and Wi-Fi.

The Hotel at Terminal City Club

The Hotel at Terminal City Club Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Terminal City is a 60-room property located in the northeastern side of Downtown Vancouver, close to the waterfront and the Convention Center. Rooms have modern amenities (such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks), fully equipped kitchenettes, and in many cases, stunning views. The decor features a few contemporary touches, but overall it's more run-of-the-mill than one might expect from a property that advertises itself as a luxury boutique. The high points of the hotel are the rooftop terrace with beautiful mountain and city views, the bright fitness center, and a wonderful indoor pool with sweeping views and a skylight.

Coast Coal Harbour Hotel

Coast Coal Harbour Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Located in an upscale area of Vancouver, only two blocks from the Seawall, Coast Coal Harbour Hotel is an upper-middle-range chain hotel in a convenient spot for both tourists and business travelers. The hotel has 220 modern rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and eco-friendly features such as recycling and compost bins and refillable soap and shampoo dispensers. Amenities include a restaurant serving Canadian comfort food, a modern fitness center, and an outdoor pool and hot tub. The hotel does have a bit of a business vibe; guests who want something more elegant and are willing to spend a little more may want to check out the Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, a luxury boutique hotel with beautiful rooms but no pool.
