Carmana Plaza

Carmana Plaza Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 120-room Carmana Plaza offers no-frills, apartment-style rooms with kitchens and, in many cases, stunning views of the mountains or the sea through floor-to-ceiling windows. There is no restaurant on-site -- not even a breakfast area -- but the hotel is one block from the restaurants and cafes on lively Robson Street, and there's a grocery store across the road.

Coast Coal Harbour Hotel

Coast Coal Harbour Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Located in an upscale area of Vancouver, only two blocks from the Seawall, Coast Coal Harbour Hotel is an upper-middle-range chain hotel in a convenient spot for both tourists and business travelers. The hotel has 220 modern rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and eco-friendly features such as recycling and compost bins and refillable soap and shampoo dispensers. Amenities include a restaurant serving Canadian comfort food, a modern fitness center, and an outdoor pool and hot tub. The hotel does have a bit of a business vibe; guests who want something more elegant and are willing to spend a little more may want to check out the Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, a luxury boutique hotel with beautiful rooms but no pool.

BEST WESTERN PLUS Uptown Hotel

BEST WESTERN PLUS Uptown Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Best Western Plus Uptown Hotel is a budget-friendly option for guests with cars (or who don't mind public transportation). The 69-room property has some convenient features for this price point: A fitness center with city views, Italian restaurant, and interior courtyard -- while free underground parking, continental breakfast, and Wi-Fi are nice perks that add value as well. Rooms are bland, but clean and spacious. Guests hoping to be closer to the Vancouver action should check rates at the Best Western Plus Chateau Grandville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center.

Best Western Plus Downtown Vancouver

Best Western Plus Downtown Vancouver Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Best Western is located in downtown Vancouver, western Canada's financial center. Its 143 bright, decent-sized rooms come with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and in many rooms, microwaves and mini-fridges. But the decor is generic, and bathrooms are nothing special. The property features a fitness center with great downtown views, a Jacuzzi, gated parking, and great freebies, including Wi-Fi, shuttle service to any downtown attraction, and bike rentals. Overall, it’s a solid pick for value.

Blue Horizon Hotel

Blue Horizon Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The location is the highlight of this mid-range hotel, situated alongside the restaurants and bars on Robson Street and within walking distance of numerous Downtown Vancouver attractions. The contemporary rooms are spacious and bright, and have balconies, but don't get too excited about the amenities -- even though the hotel has a fitness center and indoor pool, they're both small and showing their age. Since our visit, the lobby and front desk have been renovated, and ABODE restaurant has opened.

Home Suite Home

Home Suite Home Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Home Suite Home distinguishes itself from competitors with an artisan aesthetic, homey vibe, and full apartments with complete kitchens. This property is located in a quiet and upscale (yet still laid back) residential neighborhood outside Vancouver's bustling center but still near the beach. There aren't many features, other than a whimsical backyard patio and laundry facilities, but the suites are stylish with full kitchens and living rooms. Wi-Fi and parking are free. Past guests report that the owner/host is friendly and willing to go above and beyond to help his guests.

Landis Hotel & Suites

Landis Hotel & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Landis Hotel & Suites is a mid-range hotel that's popular with large families because of its two-bedroom suites with full kitchens, indoor swimming pool, free continental breakfast, and free shuttle to the cruise port. The location is convenient for exploring downtown Vancouver by foot, or the shuttle will drive guests to nearby beaches (no return service). There are occasional complaints of street noise and mildew odors in the rooms. It may be worth comparing rates at the Best Western Plus Downtown Vancouver -- kids under 12 stay free, but the decor is just as generic.

Victorian Hotel

Victorian Hotel Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The Victorian Hotel is a budget-friendly bed and breakfast that's comfortable but not as romantic or stylish as the name suggests. The hotel was originally built in 1898 as a Victorian brick building, and with 47 rooms it's definitely not a cozy inn, but more like a budget-friendly boutique hotel. Rooms are modern with hardwood floors and coffeemakers, but not all of them have private bathrooms. Continental breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. There's a small lobby with a fireplace and armchairs, but most guests spend their time exploring the nearby Gastown District.

Ramada Inn and Suites Downtown Vancouver

Ramada Inn and Suites Downtown Vancouver Rating: 2.5 Pearls

The 116-room Ramada Inn and Suites is a decent pick for value-minded partiers. Located in Downtown Vancouver, the hotel offers fairly comfy, small rooms with plain decor, plus studios and suites that come with kitchens. But there's little in the way of amenities -- just free passes for a fitness center down the street, a free business center, and a loud, hip nightclub on the ground floor.

Sunset Inn and Suites

Sunset Inn and Suites Rating: 2.5 Pearls

Sunset Inn and Suites is a budget-friendly property that was once private apartments and has now been renovated as an all-suite hotel without many features. For guests who want spacious apartments with full kitchens and balconies at a low rate while they explore Vancouver, it's hard to beat Sunset Inn. Freebies include parking, Wi-Fi, and continental breakfast. Still, there aren't any features aside from a tiny fitness center and past guests have complained about washing their own dishes after a serve-yourself breakfast that has to be brought back to the rooms on trays. The Days Inn Vancouver Downtown has a more central location and kitchenettes for around the same price.
