Boscolo Venezia, Autograph Collection

Boscolo Venezia, Autograph Collection Rating: 5.0 Pearls

A luxurious, 72-room converted palazzo in the northern edge of Venice, Boscolo Venezia Autograph Collection is a quiet retreat from the chaotic heart of the city. The rare, private garden and spa with hot tub, sauna, and steam room are highlights. Rooms have classic decor and Venetian portraits, but upgrading to a Junior Suite gets guests more space and style -- these rooms have high ceilings and intricate crown molding. The hotel's location is far from Venice's main attractions, but it does offer free water taxi service to St. Mark's Square and Murano.

Bauer Hotel

Bauer Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 119-room Bauer Hotel is a convenient two-minute walk from St. Mark's Square in the heart of Venice. This exclusive Art Deco-influenced property has a grand lobby full of gold accents and chandeliers as well as traditionally decorated rooms with high ceilings and big, modern bathrooms. The hotel features a restaurant and two two bars; Bar Canale has an outdoor terrace and Grand Canal views. There is nice variety in the daily breakfast buffet, but rooms lack tea or coffee facilities. Rates are typically lower at the nearby Hotel Saturnia, but the Bauer is arguably a bit more elegant.

Ca'Sagredo Hotel

Ca'Sagredo Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 42 luxurious rooms of Ca’Sagredo were designed in aristocratic Venetian style. This restored pink palazzo on the Grand Canal has maintained its original grandeur, including salons filled with frescoes and sweeping staircases. Huge rooms have plush furnishings and marble bathrooms; the terrace along the canal is a scenic place for a drink. This is one of the most decadent hotel experiences in Venice, and it's right on the Grand Canal, within walking distance of St. Mark's Square.

Hotel Plaza

Hotel Plaza Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This contemporary, 209-room hotel in Mestre is a 10-minute train ride from Venice. This urban location lacks the charm of central Venice, but does offer a parking lot. Rooms are either big and contemporary with a modern, minimal style or not renovated and dull. A welcoming restaurant has an open kitchen and a nice bar provides an evening gathering space. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are free, but some rooms experience noise from the nearby train station.

LaGare Hotel Venezia - Mgallery Collection

LaGare Hotel Venezia - Mgallery Collection Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale, charming 118-room hotel on Murano Island in the Venice lagoon is a chic, modern pick with a quiet atmosphere. This restored glass factory has bright, spacious interiors and displays local glass artwork. The polished rooms are decorated in soft, earth tones with big, modern bathrooms. The hotel offers free transport to the airport and mainland Venice.

The Boscolo Hotel Bellini

The Boscolo Hotel Bellini Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 97-room classic Venetian property, The Boscolo Hotel Bellini overlooks the Grand Canal near the bus terminal and train station. Rooms are traditional and elegant with small flat-screen TVs, Murano glass lamps, and big marble bathrooms -- some rooms have nice balconies, too. A bright breakfast room overlooks the garden and breakfast is free, but Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby and bar. Just note that the Cannaregio location is a significant trek from many popular tourist sights.

Hotel Palazzo Stern

Hotel Palazzo Stern Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The boutique Hotel Palazzo Stern is housed in a restored historic building on the Grand Canal, with sections dating back to the 15th century. The room decor is in a traditional Venetian style, with crystal chandeliers and luxurious curtains, but it's not overly stuffy. Amenities include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, and beautifully updated bathrooms come complete with towel warmers. But the hotel has few features; there is a small bar and a Jacuzzi on the rooftop terrace, but no spa, gym, pool, or full restaurant. Nonetheless, Hotel Palazzo Stern is one of the most popular luxury hotels in Venice, even if its Dorsoduro location is a bit removed from the main tourist action around St. Mark's Square.

Hotel Bucintoro

Hotel Bucintoro Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 20-room Hotel Bucintoro is a unique property in Venice, with elegant decor inspired by ancient sailboats. It’s located on the eastern side of the docks, removed from the crowds but within walking distance to major attractions such as Piazza San Marco. Most rooms are small, but all feature gorgeous views of the lagoon and the city (you can even see the Campanile), as well as classy decor with wood panels and a subtle maritime theme, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and marble bathrooms. There’s not much in the way of amenities, just a business center, a bar, and a cozy breakfast room, and rates can be steep. But the quiet locale, the beautiful rooms, and the views make it a wonderful pick.

Hotel Canal Grande

Hotel Canal Grande Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This luxurious 22-room boutique is housed in a centuries-old palace located along the Grand Canal, near the main train station in Venice. Decadent rooms have modern amenities including flat-screen TVs and comfortable beds, but the use of rich patterns in gold and blues, the classic artwork on the walls, and the Rococo-style furniture might be a bit too much to some. Rooms facing the canal have better views (though some have small windows), but those overlooking the lovely square are quieter. Though location is convenient for those arriving to Venice by train, the hotel is a 25-minute walk from Piazza San Marco, and it lacks a full restaurant.

Hotel Saturnia & International

Hotel Saturnia & International Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The highlight of the historic Hotel Saturnia is its location on a busy shopping street in San Marco, just a short walk from the Piazza San Marco and important sights such as the Rialto Bridge. And the rooms are attractive -- with charming historic details such as wood beamed ceilings and mahogany headboards -- although there are some variations (particularly in the quality of the bathrooms) even between rooms of the same category. Though the hotel lacks a spa, fitness center, and pool, it still offers more amenities than many other Venice hotels, offering a top-notch restaurant, a rooftop terrace (complete with an outdoor shower), and free passes to a nearby gym.
