Mandarin Oriental Washington DC

Mandarin Oriental Washington DC Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Opened in 2004, the 400-room Mandarin Oriental has the best spa, pool, and fitness center in the city. The guest rooms are large, but the hotel's beautiful location on D.C.'s remote waterfront has its trade-offs -- nothing to do or eat nearby; noise from the Amtrak trains, day and night.

The Fairmont Washington, D.C.

The Fairmont Washington, D.C. Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located in business-focused Foggy Bottom, the 415-room wedding- and convention-focused Fairmont feautres large guest rooms, as well as a superb health club which comes with a squash court, spinning studio, 50-foot pool, full-service spa, and more. On the weekends, it can be a great luxury pick for the price.

JW Marriott Hotel Washington, DC

JW Marriott Hotel Washington, DC Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A no-nonsense luxury hotel for the masses just steps away from the White House, the JW Marriott has a shopping mall-like multistory lobby and 772 cozy guestrooms. It's modestly plush, but in a populist way -- especially when compared with the place across the street, the Intercontinental Willard, which is richer and more exclusive.

Hotel Rouge, a Kimpton Hotel

Hotel Rouge, a Kimpton Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range property is a few blocks from Dupont Circle, one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. With edgy modern design throughout the property and rooms featuring bunk beds, Xboxes, and animal print bathrobes, Hotel Rouge is easily one of the more fun-spirited and family-friendly hotels in D.C. (though couples and business travelers are equally welcome here). Highlights include large, sexy rooms; in-room spa treatments, and nightly wine hours. There are slightly cheaper hotels in the heart of Dupont Circle, but the Rouge delivers more style and perks than most of its competitors. However, visitors interested in seeing Washington's major attractions may want to consider a hotel closer to the National Mall.

Washington Plaza Hotel

Washington Plaza Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Renovated in 2010, this 1960s hotel has great rooms, one of the city's best outdoor pools, a distinctive retro lobby, and a convenient central location. For vacationing families, sightseers, or business travelers tired of D.C.'s many cookie-cutter Marriotts and Hiltons, the Washington Plaza is one of the best values in town.

Washington Marriott

Washington Marriott Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This lively and colorfully decorated Marriott has an inviting lobby, large airy rooms, ample amentities, and a convenient location between Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle. The service is a bit spotty, but otherwise a fine mid-range choice.

Embassy Suites Hotel Washington, DC

Embassy Suites Hotel Washington, DC Rating: 3.5 Pearls

All units at this midlevel, 318-room Foggy Bottom property are efficiency suites with separate living rooms and bedrooms and kitchenettes with sinks, refrigerators and microwaves. Guests are served a free buffet breakfast, and evening cocktails, in the soaring atrium lobby. The rooms could use some updating, but families get a ton of value at this fun, somewhat kitschy property.

Grand Hyatt Washington

Grand Hyatt Washington Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 888-room Grand Hyatt feels every bit as big as it is: Rooms are dark and loud, lines often wrap around the check-in desk, and the gym is in disrepair. But it's conveniently located steps from the Metro Center stop in the Penn Quarter and within a 10-minute walk of the White House and convention center. A $23 million renovation is currently underway to all rooms at the Grand Hyatt, slated to be completed by March 2013.

Embassy Suites Hotel Washington, DC -Convention Center

Embassy Suites Hotel Washington, DC -Convention Center Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 384-room Embassy Suites Convention Center was given a well-needed update in 2012, which brought new decor to all rooms and the lobby. Features such as the spacious suites, free breakfast, free cocktails, and central locale a few blocks from the White House make it an appealing value for families and groups.

Omni Shoreham Hotel

Omni Shoreham Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

For the most part, the Shoreham is a hulking, fairly bland-looking 834-room convention-focused business hotel. But there's more to this historic hotel. Evening turndowns; a beautiful outdoor pool; a great gym; a quaint but still convenient location just north of Dupont Circle; a haunted room on the 8th floor -- it's an excellent choice for the price.
