One&Only Ocean Club

One&Only Ocean Club Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Bringing tranquility to otherwise-crowded Paradise Island, the 105-room One&Only Ocean Club's personal butlers, beautiful pools (one for adults, one for families), restaurant from Jean-Georges, and access to Atlantis' water park, casino, and other attractions make it one of the Caribbean's best resorts. But its small standard rooms, and, at times, less fawning service can be disappointing for the price.

Fowl Cay Resort

Fowl Cay Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Crowded beaches are unheard of on this private island resort where a maximum of 28 guests at a time have free range of 50 acres and three beaches. Personal boats for daily excursions, on-call service, spacious villas with fully stocked kitchens and wet bars, and a host of all-inclusive activities make Fowl Cay a standout gem in the Exumas. However, some of the villas feature outdated decor and worn furnishings that seem inconsistent with the resort's high nightly rates.

Grand Lucayan

Grand Lucayan Rating: 4.0 Pearls

It's the top lodging on Grand Bahama -- immaculate grounds; great beds; convenient, scenic location. It has a wide range of rooms, features, and dining options, but it can feel a bit impersonal.

Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour

Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A small, isolated, time-share-style hotel with big, beautiful suites, a marina, a friendly staff that zips around on golf carts, and managers that greet returning guests like family -- Old Bahama Bay feels more yacht club than resort. But activities are limited -- just boating or lounging by the isolated beach or pool -- and to some travelers, it's boring.

Melia Nassau Beach Resort

Melia Nassau Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort has great rooms, a gorgeous beachfront, three great pools, a top-notch gym, and a friendly and cheerful staff. But it's a massive property -- 694 rooms -- with little to eat nearby. This means that guests are stuck with the Sheraton's own overpriced, mediocre fare. Still, it's a great value.

Atlantis Paradise Island Resort

Atlantis Paradise Island Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Stunning architecture, an exceptional water park, a famous casino, three beaches, 12 otherworldly pools, and 21 superb restaurants make the 3,400-room Atlantis, Paradise Island a study in conspicuous consumption. No other resort, anywhere in the Caribbean, can compete with its dining or attractions. But we warned: this is not a tranquil place.

British Colonial Hilton Nassau Hotel

British Colonial Hilton Nassau Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A fine business hotel -- pleasant staff, convenient location, a snazzy lobby, guest rooms renovated in 2009 -- but leisure travelers will find several pleasant amenities, as well. Chief among those is an attractive pool area and sports activities. The beach is small, the rooms lack balconies (save for on the sixth floor), and though the hotel is close to the sights of downtown Nassau, the area is dead at night.

Riu Palace Paradise Island All-Inclusive

Riu Palace Paradise Island All-Inclusive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

After renovating in 2009, the Riu is now a solid all-inclusive option -- just be sure to compare its rates to the far more stunning Atlantis next door. In both cases, you get a spectacular beach, up-to-date rooms, and proximity to upscale restaurants and attractions. At the Riu, you also get unlimited food and booze.

Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino

Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The enormous, 415-room Wyndham Nassau is an aging property with cigarette-scented guest rooms. Its main attractions include a mediocre stretch of Cable Beach, a great pool, some pricey (but excellent) restaurants, and the sluggish Crystal Palace Casino.

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach-An All Inclusive Resort

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach-An All Inclusive Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

An old, worn, all-inclusive (all-you-can-drink), the 276-room Viva Wyndham is an affordable option that's about a 10-minute drive outside the restaurants and attractions in Freeport and Lucaya. The service, cleanliness, food, pool, and guest rooms all range from poor to mediocre -- and the price reflects this -- but rooms are being renovated in phases, so it's really hit or miss here.
