Dylan Hotel

Dylan Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Dylan Hotel is a stylish 44-room boutique with a quiet and safe location in Dublin 4, an upscale neighborhood a short walk from the city center. Each room has been individually styled with a mix of whimsical decor -- artistic headboards, intricate mirrors, and statement chairs -- and classic pieces. Amenities are fantastic for such a small property. In the room, there are flat-screen TVs, iPod docks (with iPods loaded with historical Dublin walking tours), stocked minibars, and bathrooms with underfloor heating. Some bathrooms also have big, luxurious soaking tubs with small flat-screen TVs. Amenities in the hotel include a fitness room, cozy bar, heated outdoor terrace, solid restaurant, and 24-hour room service. In addition to its character and sleek style, the Dylan is known for excellent service.

Schoolhouse Hotel

Schoolhouse Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Schoolhouse is a charming, historic hotel located in the leafy Ballsbridge neighborhood. The building housed a school from 1859 through 1969, and underwent a restoration in 1997 that preserved its historic character. The result is a traditional, cozy boutique hotel unlike any other in Dublin. All rooms are named after a famous Irish writer and have classic decor including floral prints and antiques. Rooms do have modern touches as well, including flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and fluffy duvets. Bathrooms have historic charm, but are a little snug. The architecture of the hotel is most striking in the on-site restaurant and bar which share a beamed cathedral ceiling. The vibrant neighborhood bar has a fireplace, outdoor seating, and screens to show all the big sports matches. The quiet location, excellent food, and history of this hotel make it one of Dublin's best affordable picks.

Hampton Hotel

Hampton Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hampton Hotel is a 24-room boutique in the pretty, residential neighborhood of Donnybrook. The exterior of the building is classic Georgian architecture, but the interior is contemporary. Rooms are spacious with a fun use of color and pattern along with flat-screen TVs, comfortable beds, and electric fireplaces. Big bathrooms are updated and some offer soaking tubs. The bar and bistro serves continental cuisine in a cozy environment, and room service is available. The bistro also offers al fresco dining during the warm months. Another highlight of the hotel is a nightclub, Vanilla, open on weekends. With a quiet location and free Wi-Fi, this hotel is a good pick for guests that don't need to be in the very heart of the city.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Four Seasons is a stately property on a big piece of land in the leafy Ballsbridge neighborhood. The 197 rooms and suites have traditional, pleasant decor with light colors and floral patterns, but the overall effect is a bit blander and less luxurious than at other Four Seasons properties. Big, marble bathrooms have separate soaking tubs and walk-in showers. There are several dining options here, including a tapas bar, surf and turf restaurant, and a casual cafe. Hotel highlights include a sunny indoor pool and Jacuzzi, along with a fitness center and spa. The grounds around the hotel are beautiful and include quirky, literary-themed sculptures along with a nice patio for outdoor seating. This tasteful hotel is a quiet pick in a residential area of Dublin, but there is a pesky daily fee for Wi-Fi.

Ariel House

Ariel House Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Little effort has been spared in recreating an authentic Victorian experience in this quaint Ballsbridge hotel -- from handpicked antiques to meticulously maintained original features, you really get a sense of stepping into the 19th century. Rooms continue the theme, though some can appear a little dated, while the hotel's traditional afternoon tea is a real treat. Location is key -- it's perfect for the Aviva Stadium, and Dublin city center is about 20 minutes away on foot (transport links are also good). Rates are generally reasonable for the area, but if all this period feels a little passé, check out the modernized Sandymount Hotel just down the road.

Mespil Hotel

Mespil Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Mespil Hotel offers a fantastic location overlooking the Grand Canal in the upscale Ballsbridge neighborhood. Big, contemporary rooms have comfortable beds with crisp white linens, color accent walls, large windows, and updated amenities such as flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Hotel features include an all-day bistro, casual bar, free self-parking (though space is limited), and hearty breakfast. While there's no fitness center, there are many paths along the canal for a jog. Some rooms can feel a little dated, but this hotel offers great value and service in a safe, quiet neighborhood.

Grand Canal Hotel

Grand Canal Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

There's not a lot to find fault with at the 142-room Grand Canal Hotel, but equally little to get excited about either. It's a modern hotel with all the amenities expected of a mid-range property, plus a few more -- free on-site parking for one. Rooms are generally satisfactory, but an upgrade to an Executive Room brings such extras as smart TVs, CD players, Egyptian cotton duvets, and robes. The location, across from Grand Canal Dart Station and within walking distance of Aviva Stadium, the Bord Gais Theatre, and the Royal Dublin Society is ideal for some travelers, but the city center is at least a 20-minute walk away. There's a Dublin Public Bike Scheme station, one of 40 public bike stations around the city, right outside the hotel.

Bewley's Hotel Ballsbridge

Bewley's Hotel Ballsbridge Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Bewley's Hotel is housed in a striking, 19th-century building that was once a school and is surrounded by attractive grounds. It is beautiful and grand from the outside, and makes a great first impression with a big, modern lobby full of cozy seating. However, rooms aren't quite as modern. While they are clean and spacious, decor is generic and some have old tube TVs. All rooms have electric kettles, and suites offer contemporary decor and updated bathrooms. Hotel amenities include a large restaurant and bar with a sunny patio for the summer months. Bewley's is a good value pick located in the safe, upscale neighborhood of Ballsbridge, a 10-minute drive from the city center. The DART train is close by for easy transportation to centrally located sights.

Roxford Lodge Hotel

Roxford Lodge Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Set in a a Victorian town house in fashionable Ballsbridge with homey chintz, brass chandeliers, stained glass, and free bottomless hot beverages served all day, the 20-room Roxford Lodge Hotel at first might seem more posh B&B than mid-range boutique hotel. It goes all out with in-room amenities, however, which include free Wi-Fi and huge flat-screen TVs with DVD libraries, and separate taps for drinking water; most rooms also come with infra-red saunas and jetted tubs -- the Executive Suite, with a kitchen, bar area, and large sauna, is particularly special. The residential location offers quiet and easy access to Dublin center but without the hubbub. Those who don't mind being a little farther out might want to check out the Sandymount Hotel, whose rates tend to be a little lower.

Herbert Park Hotel

Herbert Park Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Herbert Park Hotel is a comfortable, quiet pick in the Ballsbridge neighborhood of Dublin. Named after the park that it overlooks -- an excellent spot for jogging or picnics -- this hotel offers 153 simple, stylish rooms. Though some rooms have tube TVs, all have minibars, fluffy duvets, and writing desks. Additional hotel highlights include a bright breakfast room, small fitness room, and spacious lobby bar with plenty of lounge seating. The hotel also has underground parking and serves great food utilizing produce from local suppliers. Though the location is not completely central, this neighborhood is full of local restaurants, pubs, and shops. Central Dublin is a 10-minute taxi ride away.
