Melia Bilbao

Melia Bilbao Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This ultra-modern, 10-floor, 211-room hotel in the heart of Bilbao is all about clean lines and interesting architecture. Right in the center of town and very close to the Guggenheim Museum, the Melia Bilbao feels to many like a modern art museum versus a hotel. Designed by a Mexican architect with inspiration drawn from the Basque sculptor Chillida, the hotel is filled with bright colors, interesting angles and, a sleek, minimalistic vibe. Though advertised as a five-star property, it doesn't quite live up to that level of luxury with bland rooms, no spa, and long lines at the front desk and elevators. However, rooms do have gorgeous bathrooms and the Michelin-rated restaurant is a true standout.
Barcelo Costa Vasca

Barcelo Costa Vasca Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Barcelo Costa Vasca is an upscale property about a 35-minute walk to the old town of San Sebastian, and a 15-minute walk to the beach. The hotel attracts business travelers and tourists with cars. Expect a charge for breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi. Rooms are stylish and clean. There's a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and a spa with sauna and fitness center. The property is popular for weddings and proms.
Hotel Astoria 7

Hotel Astoria 7 Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Hotel Astoria 7 is a fun upscale boutique hotel with a prevalent cinema theme in its guest rooms and public spaces. The location isn't the most ideal for exploring the old town center of San Sebastian, but the 15- to 20-minute walk is safe and pleasant along a river. La Concha is about a 20-minute walk. Sala7 serves traditional Spanish cuisine while the snack bar is like a small cafe with a tapa of the month and an extensive wine selection. Contemporary, comfortable rooms have movie-themed decor.
Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra

Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 167-room luxury boutique Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra is a legend in San Sebastian, with a 115-year history that includes many famed guests, including Toulouse-Lautrec and Mata Hari, who reportedly spied from her room, and after whom a lovely penthouse suite has been named. A former palace, the hotel retains its air of rich, classic elegance with British-themed decor throughout the public areas and upscale guestrooms. The beachfront location is within walking distance of the many tapas restaurants in the Old Quarter.
Silken Amara Plaza Hotel

Silken Amara Plaza Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Silken Amara Plaza hotel is a renovated (in 2014) upscale property in a quiet area of San Sebastian. The public spaces are modern and comfortable, and rooms have a contemporary design scheme. Original artwork by Spanish artists lines the walls of the lobby. The on-site Plaza Restaurant serves breakfast buffet style and offers an a la carte lunch and dinner menu, and room service. La Ola Piano Bar does cocktails and live music. The location is a bit far from the beach and Old Town, but there's buses and a taxi stop just outside the hotel's front doors. Wi-Fi is free, but slow. Travelers might want to check rates at Barcelo Costa Vasca, which has a swimming pool.
