Mandarin Oriental, Boston

Mandarin Oriental, Boston Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 148-room Mandarin Oriental in Back Bay offers some of Boston's most luxurious standard rooms, plus a 16,000-square-foot spa and extraordinary service. It has no pool; and the views aren't as grand as those at the high-end properties on Copley Square. But it's as special as any hotel in Boston -- and a clear winner if you prefer contemporary to traditional decor and ambience.

Boston Harbor Hotel

Boston Harbor Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With impeccable service, some of the biggest guest rooms in Boston, and a phenomenal gym, spa, and lap pool, the 230-room Boston Harbor Hotel is among the city's most luxurious hotels. The restaurant is celebrated for its extensive wine collection, and the harborside location means gorgeous water views from many of the rooms.

The Ritz-Carlton Boston Common

The Ritz-Carlton Boston Common Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Boston Ritz-Carlton is refreshingly intimate with spacious, luxurious standard rooms and access, for a fee, to one of the city's best gyms, with its own spa, salon, and pool. But it doesn't thrill stylewise, service is uneven, and the restaurant is unremarkable.

Langham Hotel Boston

Langham Hotel Boston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A former Federal Reserve bank turned luxury hotel in the grey, sterile Financial District, the Langham boasts immaculate, distinctively Bostonian rooms (with flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi), spot-on service, and a stellar spa, but significant street noise keeps it from attaining perfection.

Fairmont Battery Wharf Boston

Fairmont Battery Wharf Boston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Opened in 2008, the 150-room Fairmont Battery Wharf has great harborside views, attentive service, spacious standard rooms, a celebrated restaurant, and a location on the site of one of Boston's most historic wharves. Overall, it's a great harborfront pick.

Intercontinental Boston

Intercontinental Boston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Palatial, contemporary, and elegant, the InterContinental offers huge, immaculate rooms and an array of decadent amenities (massage, pool, sushi, cocktails) in a scenic harborside location, but the service doesn't quite compare to that at Boston's best luxury hotels.

W Boston

W Boston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With large, stylish rooms, a Jean-Georges restaurant, a happening bar, and a Bliss spa, the sleek, 235-room outpost of the trendy brand offers a striking, modern alternative to Boston's historic hotels and traditional chains. Too bad it lacks the unique charms of smaller boutique properties.

Hyatt Regency Boston

Hyatt Regency Boston Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 498-room Hyatt Regency is in need of an overhaul -- it's outdated, disorganized, and not well maintained. While the location is good, on a quiet street in downtown with the Boston Common and the Financial District each just a block away and it has a big 24-hour fitness center, it's hard to recommend a stay here; just up the street the Omni Parker House does it better.

Royal Sonesta Hotel

Royal Sonesta Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Though it lacks any Boston flavor -- despite its location on the banks of the Charles River -- the 400-room Royal Sonesta is one of the best deals going in Cambridge. A renowned Italian restaurant, skyline and river views, and comfortable rooms easily make up for the odd design that dresses up an outdated shell with avant-garde art installations.

Boston Marriott Copley Place

Boston Marriott Copley Place Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A huge, 1,148-room hotel that opens into a mall and connects to a convention center, the Marriott appears impersonal and uninviting. Though rooms were renovated in 2011, service is inconsistent, food is mediocre, and elevators are painfully slow. If you need to stay within the convention-center-hotel complex, you may want to consider the Westin or Sheraton; if not, get more from your money elsewhere.
