InterContinental Madrid

InterContinental Madrid Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 302-room, luxurious Intercontinental Madrid was designed to mimic an 18th century palace, with enormous chandeliers, gold leaf accents, fireplaces, marble floors and inlaid wood furniture. The Intercontinental suits top executives in town on business and guests who appreciate quality and attention to detail. Visitors can enjoy fine cigars, tapas and designer cocktails in the stylish Bar 49, or a gourmet dinner or piano-accompanied Sunday brunch in the elegant El Jardin restaurant. The fitness center is top-notch, and the small spa has two treatment rooms and a sauna. The hotel is within walking distance of Calle de Serrano, home to Madrid’s most exclusive designer boutiques, but it's a long walk or 10-minute subway ride to the city center.

Hesperia Madrid

Hesperia Madrid Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 171-room Hesperia Madrid is located in the trendy Rios Rosas neighborhood. This upscale property offers spacious and comfortable rooms with fun design accents such as leopard print armchairs. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, quality mattresses, minibars, and big marble bathrooms. The common areas of the hotel are very well maintained, from the spacious lobby with plenty of lounge space to the rooftop fitness center. Dining choices here include a Michelin-rated restaurant, Santceloni, a sushi bar, a cocktail bar, or room service. The location and price make it suited for a well-heeled crowd, but the property doesn't offer a spa or a pool.

Occidental Miguel Angel Hotel & Urban Spa

Occidental Miguel Angel Hotel & Urban Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 263-room Occidental is a spacious property with a luxurious past. While it has all the amenities of an upscale hotel -- a spa, indoor pool, small fitness center, Michelin-starred restaurant, and 24-hour room service -- the decor is very dated. Rooms are spacious but tired, with lots of floral prints, wooden accents, and old tube TVs. Room amenities include free Wi-Fi, and in some, big balconies. The stand-out feature here is a fantastic garden and outdoor dining area, yet the hotel isn't really within easy walking distance of sights and restaurants. Those looking for alternatives could consider the Catalonia Plaza Mayor in Huertas or the luxurious Hotel Silken Puerta America.

Hotel Orfila

Hotel Orfila Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 19th-century mansion was renovated in 1999 to create the 32-room Hotel Orfila. This historic, traditional hotel has a beautiful marble lobby and restaurant, and rooms are filled with genuine antique furniture. Each room has unique decor, but share a similar style of soft colors, floral patterns, and dark wood accents (though in certain rooms the effect is frumpy rather than charming). Beyond space and an old-world ambiance, guests can expect solid service at this boutique property. There is also a lovely outdoor patio surrounded by greenery. Charm and location keep guests returning -- the hotel is on an attractive tree-lined street a short walk from numerous restaurants and shops.

NH Abascal

NH Abascal Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range hotel caters to business travelers with a small (but dated) fitness center, a solid breakfast buffet, meeting rooms, and a convenient location near the financial district and public transportation. All rooms have hardwood floors, work desks with comfortable chairs, and stocked minibars, but flat-screen TVs are tiny and there’s a pesky fee for Wi-Fi. Premium Rooms feature more space; great extras such as Hi-Fi sound systems, Fagor coffeemakers, and separate walk-in showers and tubs; and private terraces. The neighborhood is known for its nightlife, varied dining options, and easy access to the historic center and business areas, but there are few tourist attractions nearby, so those who want to explore the city on foot might want to stay closer to Sol and Gran Via.

NH Prisma Suites

NH Prisma Suites Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 110-room NH Prisma Suites is one of the more updated properties in the NH chain. While this hotel offers the same no-frills amenities found at sister NH properties, it also features extra space. All units are big suites with a separate seating area, flat-screen TVs, and bright bathrooms. A recent renovation brought in modern touches such as contemporary furniture, stereo systems, and attractive wood floors. Hotel features include an on-site bar and restaurant, known for serving a great breakfast buffet. While there is a fee for Wi-Fi in the rooms and some guests complain about street noise, this property has a great location in a charming neighborhood and is one of the best Madrid properties in the NH chain.

NH Zurbano

NH Zurbano Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The NH Zurbano is located on a quiet side street in the Rios Rosas neighborhood. All 266 rooms are basic, spacious, and clean, with wood floors -- but the Superior Rooms offer more appealing decor than the Standard Rooms. Both offer small flat-screen TVs, work desks, and stocked minibars. Bathrooms are also a generous size for Madrid. Hotel amenities include a lobby bar, restaurant where a breakfast buffet is served (sometimes included in the nightly rate), and room service. While the hotel doesn't offer a fitness center, guests can use a nearby gym at a discounted rate. Wi-Fi is free in the spacious lobby for only 30 minutes, and is pricey in the room. This value option has a great location in bustling Rios Rosas near nightlife, shopping, and restaurants.

NH Breton

NH Breton Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The NH Breton is a 56-room value hotel located in the hip Rios Rosas neighborhood. Rooms are updated and modern with hardwood floors and striking colors. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and spacious marble bathrooms. Springing for a junior suite gets guests considerably more space, a massive balcony, and an espresso machine. The hotel puts out an expansive breakfast buffet, typical of the NH chain, but there are few other amenities (no fitness center, bar, spa, or pool). This no-frills property only offers free Wi-Fi in the lobby (there's a fee to use it in the rooms), but it is located in a great neighborhood on a quiet street.

NH Alonso Martinez

NH Alonso Martinez Rating: 3.0 Pearls

THIS HOTEL HAS UNDERGONE A RENOVATION SINCE OUR VISIT. WE WILL UPDATE OUR PHOTOS AND REVIEW AS SOON AS WE CAN. The NH Embajada is located in a historic building with classical exterior architecture in the Bilboa neighborhood. This property was converted from an apartment building into a hotel, and offers 101 spacious rooms with big bathrooms. They're clean and have plenty of natural light, along with small flat-screen TVs, minibars, and work desks; some have French balconies. The biggest hotel perk is an expansive breakfast buffet, typical of the NH chain. The lobby here is unremarkable, and there is a fee for in-room Wi-Fi. It's worth comparing prices with the slightly more upscale Catalonia Goya.
