Sir F.K. Savigny Hotel Berlin

Sir F.K. Savigny Hotel Berlin Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The sleek Sir F.K. Savigny Hotel is a design-inspired boutique hotel in the elegant Charlottenburg neighborhood. All 45 rooms share an ultra-modern black and white motif, complete with flowing white curtains and striking black and white photographs. This hotel offers great freebies, such as in-room Wi-Fi, a minibar stocked with beer and soft drinks, and a Nespresso machine. Bright rooms get excellent natural night and have big flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. An attractive garden with tables and chairs is located out back of the 19th century building, and some rooms have balconies for private outdoor space. While bathrooms lack complete privacy and some guests consider the breakfast to be expensive, this is a great pick for design, location, and freebies.
NH Berlin Kurfuerstendamm

NH Berlin Kurfuerstendamm Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The NH Berlin Kurfuerstendamm is a 167-room hotel near Ku'Damm, home of great shopping and dining. The brick property is sleek and modern with a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of Berlin. Contemporary rooms are decorated in soothing, neutral tones and have flat-screen TVs along with electric kettles. Hotel perks include the 7th floor fitness and wellness area, offering a steamroom, sauna, heated lounge chairs, and a fitness center. Breakfast is served in a bright room on the second floor until late morning, though the price is steep. A stylish bar serves cocktails and light meals, and the lively outdoor patio is a great amenity during summer months. While the location and amenities are good, there is a fee for Wi-Fi (free in the lobby) and no full restaurant on-site.
Hotel Savoy Berlin

Hotel Savoy Berlin Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The historic Hotel Savoy is located in the elegant Charlottenburg neighborhood. This hotel first opened its doors in 1929, and welcomed famous guests from Greta Garbo to Thomas Mann in its grander days. The 125 rooms are large and traditional, with simple bathrooms, free in-room Wi-Fi, coffee machines, and flat-screen TVs -- though they are starting to show some wear and tear. Perks here include a cigar lounge, several restaurants and bars, and a small fitness center with sauna. A color palette of regal red is found throughout this charming hotel, and though some guests complain of thin walls, service here is still top-notch.
Abba Berlin Hotel

Abba Berlin Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Abba Berlin Hotel in Ku'Damm offers clean, modern style throughout. The 214 rooms are plush and neutral, with sleek decor, big bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Hotel perks include a chic restaurant and comfortable lounge/bar. There is also an indoor Jacuzzi, sauna, and spacious fitness center (though there's not much equipment and cardio machines lack individual TVs). While there is a fee for Wi-Fi in the rooms, this hotel is a solid pick for its location near a popular shopping street, bike rentals, and appealing contemporary style.
Grand City Hotel Berlin Zentrum

Grand City Hotel Berlin Zentrum Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Grand City Hotel Berlin Zentrum is a mid-range property with a great location. Rooms are clean but slightly dated, and lack basic amenities (standard rooms don't have coffeemakers or safes, and no rooms have alarm clocks). Rooms have small, flat-screen TVs and tiny bathrooms, unless guests choose to upgrade to one of the pricier room options. Its location on Kurfurstendamm, a main drag with tons of shopping and restaurants, is a real draw, along with the appealing, 24-hour lobby bar. While the red and yellow color scheme is appealing in a traditional way, a nearby sister property -- the Grand City Hotel Berlin Kudamm -- is in better shape and may be a better value.
Precise Casa Berlin

Precise Casa Berlin Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Precise Casa Berlin is a mid-range boutique hotel with 35 simple, minimalistic rooms and suites. While standard rooms are small, they have nice updates like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Deluxe rooms or apartments provide a significant space upgrade, with sitting areas, kitchenettes, and huge soaking tubs. The location in elegant Charlottenburg is near excellent shopping, including the famous Kurfurstendamm, a street lined with boutiques. Convenient extras here include a cozy, modern breakfast room and a bar off the lobby, but the rooms have no air-conditioning -- resulting in uncomfortable summer nights -- and there can be some street noise in the front of the building.
Hotel Astoria am Kurfuerstendamm

Hotel Astoria am Kurfuerstendamm Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The simple 32-room Hotel Astoria -- built in 1888 -- is tucked away in a quiet street off Kurfürstendamm. Big, clean rooms are decorated with classic touches including dark wood furniture. A wave of recent refurbishments have introduced more modern amenities, such as flat-screen TVs and fluffy white duvets. Some rooms have a private balcony, and all guests can enjoy the communal outdoor terrace. While indoor common areas could use some updating, this cozy hotel offers an extensive free breakfast, a nice bar, bike rentals, and free Wi-Fi.
Hampton by Hilton Berlin City West

Hampton by Hilton Berlin City West Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Hampton by Hilton Berlin City West is located in east Charlottenburg, near transport and great shopping along Ku'Damm. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and contemporary -- if slightly generic -- with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Perks include free hot breakfast, a 24-hour bar, small but modern fitness center, and inexpensive bike rentals. Some rooms have balconies and all have electric kettles and bright, new bathrooms. While this is a great pick for value (and for the helpful concierge desk) there is a railway track on one side of the hotel that causes a lot of noise.
Hecker's Hotel

Hecker's Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hecker's is a quiet hotel with a new and upscale facade in the Charlottenburg neighborhood. But though the lobby is modern and the suites are chic, basic rooms have outdated decor, motel-quality bedspreads, and few amenities (just flat-screen TVs and modern safes). All public areas and bathrooms have been renovated, and individually decorated suites are gorgeous. An upgrade here gets not only additional space, but hardwood floors, small balconies, and interesting art. Perks include a lobby bar, attractive ground-floor restaurant, and a seasonal roof terrace. Not all of the 69 rooms and suites here meet the advertised four-star standard, but the location is convenient and Wi-Fi is free.
Hollywood Media Hotel

Hollywood Media Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Hollywood Media Hotel is a quirky, film-themed property right on Ku'Damm, a central shopping strip in Charlottenburg. Film posters, paintings, and statues cover the lobby, hallways, and elevators. While each of the 182 rooms is named after a different filmmaker or movie star, the decor is surprisingly simple. Plain, slightly old-fashioned rooms are big in size and on the verge of bland. Hotel perks include a breakfast buffet, small fitness center with sauna, and on-site restaurants. With a convenient location in the heart of Charlottenburg, this hotel is a good, quirky pick owned by a German film director.
