Pullman Sydney Hyde Park

Pullman Sydney Hyde Park Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Located just off Hyde Park in Darlinghurst is an upscale, business-oriented property with many meeting spaces and a business center (though there's a fee to use the Internet). However, many guests feel it doesn't live up to its advertised five-star status. Though common spaces feel posh -- the lobby exudes class and sophistication with fresh orchids, marble floors, and a cozy guest lounge -- rooms are typical of a nicer Pullman hotels, with chain-like contemporary decor and flat-screen TVs. The kitchenette amenities, including microwaves, coffeemakers, and toasters, are a bonus, however, and some rooms have high-end bathrooms with soaking tubs. The classy Windows on the Park restaurant, with its beautiful views of Hyde Park, is worthy of a luxury hotel, as if the rooftop pool with great city views -- but the small fitness center, not so much.
Medusa Hotel

Medusa Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Medusa Hotel is a quirky, 18-room boutique hotel with artsy flair. It has the look and feel of a converted house, with a cozy fireplace in the lobby and a painting that depicts the property's namesake. Rooms are on the small side, but have a contemporary look with bright accent walls, muted geometric patterns, and modern platform beds. Each room has a kitchenette that features a microwave, coffeemaker, and minibar, and flat-screen TVs are accompanied by DVD players and small stereo systems. All-white bathrooms are basic but functional and come stocked with Aveda bath products. Amenities are few: no pool, fitness center or restaurant, and a one-computer business center. There is a small outdoor courtyard with a slender, decorative pool, however, and guests get free access to a nearby swimming pool and gym. The Darlinghurst location is within walking distance of the bars and clubs in Kings Cross and on Oxford Street.
Kirketon Hotel Sydney

Kirketon Hotel Sydney Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located in the lively Darlinghurst neighborhood near Woolloomooloo and Kings Cross, the Kirketon Hotel Sydney is a 40-room, art-inspired boutique hotel that fuses contemporary style with classic Parisian influences. The rooms have sophisticated decor, crisp white bedding, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, DVD players, and flat-screen TVs -- but they're a bit dark, and bathrooms need updating (the tile grout is dirty, and the odd showerheads are stuck to the ceiling). Standard Rooms are tiny, and are meant for single occupancy. The hotel itself lacks a fitness center, but guests are offered free access to a nearby gym. The speakeasy-styled cocktail bar, Eau de Vie, is a definite highlight -- it's one of the trendiest spots in the city.
Altamont Hotel Sydney

Altamont Hotel Sydney Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This Colonial mansion turned nightclub turned boutique hotel has a rock 'n roll history, having been frequented by celebrities like Madonna and the Rolling Stones back when it was known as Cauldron Nightclub. The building has a slightly industrial feel, with exposed concrete floors, though wood furnishings help give it a homier vibe. The lobby lounge features a pool table and comfortable sofas, as well as conveniences like a toaster and hotplate (the hotel does offer a free daily breakfast as well). The 13 rooms at the Altamont are basic, with some visible wear and tear and dingy bathrooms (the exposed showers make it hard not to flood the rest of the bathroom with water). They are reasonably clean, though, and have large flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Business travelers may also want to look elsewhere, as there is no restaurant, business center, or fitness room here, and Wi-Fi, though free, is unreliable. It's a decent value option for visitors looking to be close to the Kings Cross nightlife scene.
