Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 420-room Hard Rock, located in the hip Gaslamp Quarter, hosts wild parties on weekends at its popular rooftop pool and bar. It's a haven for twenty- and thirty-somethings (including celebrities), and trendy rooms have big flat-screen TVs and high-thread-count sheets. But it's not particularly kid-friendly (420 rooms and a restaurant called Maryjane's where happy hour starts at 4:20...you get the idea), so families should consider the nearby Hotel Solamar.
Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown

Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Don't let the chain name fool you -- this 230-room Courtyard by Marriott is decidedly upscale. It is housed in a 1920s bank building, and historical elements have been preserved throughout (particularly in the grand lobby). Rooms are stylish and contemporary, and some have bay views. The location in San Diego's happening Gaslamp Quarter is near some of the city's best nightlife. The lobby restaurant, aptly called The Lobby, serves California cuisine for three meals a day, and there's even a Starbucks on-site. Just note that valet parking is a bit pricey, and the elevators can be slow during busy check-in times. It's a great value for the area -- the nearby San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter is similarly priced, but not nearly as nice.
Andaz San Diego

Andaz San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 159-room boutique is one of the sleekest hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter, with a popular rooftop lounge and a sexy wine bar. Rooms are minimally decorated but attractive, with slate-tiled bathrooms and modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs. Some minibar items are also available for no additional fee, and the rooftop pool is a nice spot for a dip.
Omni San Diego Hotel

Omni San Diego Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 511-room Omni San Diego Hotel is a solid four-pearl pick in the Gaslamp Quarter, with an outdoor pool and spacious, contemporary rooms. It's across the road from the San Diego Convention Center, and is connected to Petco Park via skybridge -- but for those more interested in partying than in business or baseball, the nearby Hard Rock offers more exciting nightlife options.
Hotel Solamar San Diego

Hotel Solamar San Diego Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 235-room Kimpton boutique just outside the Gaslamp Quarter is notable for its stylish rooms with beach-inspired decor and its attractive rooftop pool area. There are some great freebies -- a free nightly wine hour, free coffee and tea in the lobby, free newspaper delivery, and free guided walks every Wednesday afternoon -- but you'll have to pay for parking and business center services. The nearby Hard Rock Hotel is sometimes a little cheaper, but it's less kid-friendly.
San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A sleek lobby, a quality restaurant, a popular rooftop lounge with views of Petco Park, and the street-level Latitude Lounge make this 291-room Marriott in the hip Gaslamp Quarter quite a bit more happening than your average chain hotel. But the rooms, while comfortable, feel somewhat bland and generic. The Hard Rock Hotel around the corner offers more stylish rooms at a slightly higher price point.
Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Despite its name, the Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is actually in the East Village, just down the street from the historic Gaslamp Quarter, but this combines the best of both worlds: It's close to all the action but not overrun with noise from the nearby nightlife. The hip rooms have sophisticated bathrooms and good views of downtown. For the environmentally-conscious, it's the first LEED certified hotel in downtown San Diego with eco-friendly containers, low water consumption, and a green roof. It's also pet-friendly, with dog beds and treats. Like other hotels in the Indigo chain, work desks with extra outlets, Wi-Fi, and extensive meeting facilities make the hotel a good choice for business travelers.
Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This mid-range property in the Gaslamp Quarter is surprisingly stylish for a Residence Inn, and one of the most family-friendly properties in San Diego, despite its happening location. It's easy to save money on food here -- rooms all have kitchens, there's a barbecue area next to the small pool, and the buffet breakfast is free. There's also plenty of room for families to spread out: the smallest room starts at 400 square feet, and many rooms have sofa beds. All in all, it’s a great value -- but families may also want to consider the nearby Hotel Solamar.
