Aloft Harlem

Aloft Harlem Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 124-room Aloft Harlem offers a stylish stay for a good value -- a trademark of its brand. Modern, streamlined design throughout the property merges with playful, music-oriented details that give the spaces character. Rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and luxurious Bliss toiletries, as well as cool design features. The hip on-site bar has a billiards table, and the fitness center is large and modern (though shared with apartment residents). Though the Harlem location is some distance from New York City’s main tourist sights, this part of the neighborhood offers many excellent restaurants, galleries, and performance spaces, including the iconic Apollo Theater just one block away.
Chez Michelle

Chez Michelle Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The owner -- and namesake -- of this two-room property comes from France and caters largely to her compatriots. Michelle resides in the basement apartment while her guests have the first floor to themselves. The two rooms are comfortable and bright, overlooking either a quiet brownstone-lined block of Harlem or Michelle's private backyard garden. Only the front room -- named after John Lennon -- has a private bathroom. The other (named for James Dean) has access to a bathroom in the hallway. There are no other amenities on-site, but the overall homey vibe, solid rates, and proximity to the famous Apollo Theater make this an attractive B&B option in New York City.
La Maison d'Art

La Maison d'Art Rating: 3.0 Pearls

La Maison d'Art is a true hidden gem, located on a brownstone-lined street in Harlem. This individualized boutique has just five rooms on-site, and each one is beautifully curated -- much like the gallery space housed on the first floor of the property. An ever-changing array of paintings and sculptures line the walls, making each stay unique. The gallery itself is open to the public and also hosts art-centric events throughout the year. The rooms are sumptuously decorated, and feature kitchenettes or full kitchens. There are no other amenities on-site, nor is there an elevator, but the homey, artistic vibe and welcoming staff make this property worth seeking out.
