The Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Located about 15 minutes from both Disney and Universal Studios on the beautiful (and massive) Grande Lakes resort grounds, the Ritz-Carlton is one of the best luxury hotels in Orlando -- swanky rooms, great pools, and a giant spa. But, since it shares all its features with the virtually identical JW Marriott, it's worth comparing rates.

Hyatt Regency Orlando

Hyatt Regency Orlando Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Located next to the Orange County Convention Center, the Peabody's impressive array of services, beautiful interiors, and top-notch restaurants make it one of Orlando's classiest hotels. The hotel added a 32-story tower, a revamped pool complex, and a huge spa and fitness center as part of a massive expansion completed in 2010.

Caribe Royale Orlando

Caribe Royale Orlando Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This affordable, 1,218-room convention hotel a five-minute drive from the Walt Disney World theme parks is a great value for families on a budget. The overall decor is a little dowdy, but guests who don't need high-design get large suites, good dining variety, and features like an enormous pool and a two-story fitness center.

The Westin Orlando Universal Boulevard

The Westin Orlando Universal Boulevard Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Catering primarily to business travelers, this 315-room Westin has spacious and well-appointed rooms with kitchenettes, a superb pool, and a small, but well-equipped gym. Located across from the Orange County Convention Center and 10 minutes from SeaWorld, this hotel stands out in an area mostly dominated by enormous, bland hotels.

JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes

JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 998-room JW Marriott is one of the most luxurious resorts in Orlando, and not just because it shares a gorgeous golf course and spa with the adjacent Ritz-Carlton. Its big rooms, streaming lazy-river pool, and acclaimed Italian restaurant are all among the best in Orlando -- a great choice, for business or a family vacation.

Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa

Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range property is a massive lakeside resort with lovely features including seven pools, a pretty spa, and several dining options. All condo-style units feature homey touches such as kitchenettes, modern technology, and warm decor, and guests can take their pick of everything from studios to four-bedroom villas. While freebies are plentiful, they come at the cost of a daily resort fee. Nonetheless, this resort is an excellent pick for families and business travelers -- but guests may consider comparing prices with the nearby Westgate Palace.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Orlando-Universal

Crowne Plaza Hotel Orlando-Universal Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 400-room hotel just off of International Drive is a solid upper-middle-range pick in Orlando. Not only does it feature up-to-date amenities that include a well-equipped fitness center, a large business center, and an outdoor pool complete with a whirlpool, but it also boasts spacious and modern rooms with iPod docks and large flat-screen TVs. A free shuttle to nearby attractions and a free breakfast buffet for children under 10 adds to the value, but fees for in-room Wi-Fi and parking are disappointing.

Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive

Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive Rating: 3.5 Pearls

THE WYNDHAM ORLANDO RESORT COMPLETED A $50 MILLION RENOVATION IN 2013. WE WILL UPDATE OUR REVIEW AS SOON AS WE CAN. It might be billed as family resort, but this sprawling 1,052-room International Drive hotel is more like a mishmash of roadside motel, convention center, and a budget resort with three mediocre pools. Given the old, musty guest rooms and lack of security (no gates or apparent monitoring), both families and business travelers can do better elsewhere -- at least until the $50 million renovations are completed in 2014.

Rosen Plaza Hotel

Rosen Plaza Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

It's primarily a business hotel -- it's next to the Orange County Convention Center and has loads of its own meeting space -- but the 832-room Rosen Plaza also includes a large pool, a notable steakhouse, and a small, windowless gym. It's adequate, but its features and lackluster service don't rise above Orlando's stiff competition.

Vista Cay

Vista Cay Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This quiet property features privately owned condos and townhouses, and mostly attracts families with its safe, neighborhood vibe. The club house acts like the local country club; not only does it feature a fitness center and game room, but it also has a business center. The real highlight is the lovely pool area, which offers a view of the adjacent Lake Cay. While decor can vary slightly from unit to unit, all condos have separate living rooms and dining rooms, fully-stocked modern kitchens, and washer/dryers. Though many of Orlando’s main attractions are just a short drive away, there are no restaurants on-site.
