Hotel Villa Rolandi Thalasso SPA - Gourmet & Beach Club

Hotel Villa Rolandi Thalasso SPA - Gourmet & Beach Club Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Hotel Villa Rolandi is a romantic, 35-room boutique that fully embraces the "less hectic than Cancun" vibe of Isla Mujeres. Two big draws are the secluded location on a pristine (albeit somewhat small) white-sand beach and the "no children under 13" policy. All rooms are spacious suites (the smallest starts at 498 square feet) that offer flat-screen TVs, large balconies with private Jacuzzis, and Italian marble floors. Great perks include a free continental breakfast delivered to rooms at no extra charge, and a 42-foot yacht that provides free transportation to and from Cancun. However, these luxe extras make for somewhat steep rates.
Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres

Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Close to the bustle of downtown Isla Mujeres and along the beautiful sands of Playa Norte, Privilege Aluxes provides not only comfort but also a touch of luxury. The 124 rooms are spacious, feature a modern, minimalist decor -- though at times it may seem too austere -- and come outfitted with amenities such as alarm clock radios, minibars, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. Many are suites and have impressive ocean views and large, private terraces with their own Jacuzzis. Outside, the grounds are well kept, dotted with tall palm trees and two glistening pools. The shoreline is just steps away and the hotel provides relaxing beach beds shaded by towering palm roofs. There’s an all-inclusive option for guests, and there are three on-site restaurants to choose from.
Isla Mujeres Palace - All Inclusive

Isla Mujeres Palace - All Inclusive Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 62-room all-inclusive, couples-only boutique hotel is located on a white-sand beach in the southern part of Isla Mujeres. It features all the standards of larger resorts -- a nice pool with a swim-up bar, non-motorized water sports, balconies with ocean views -- but on a smaller scale and with a more intimate vibe. Airy rooms are luxurious and elegant with Jacuzzis for two, furnished balconies, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. There is one restaurant here with a somewhat limited menu. Perks at this hotel include a lack of crowds -- no fighting for pool chairs here -- along with a nice fitness center, spa with four treatment rooms, and quiet beach.
Ixchel Beach Hotel

Ixchel Beach Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Along the white-sand beaches of Isla Mujeres (the narrow island off the coast of Cancun) is Ixchel Beach Hotel -- a not-too-big condo complex that appeals to couples and families. The 117-room property comes in two wings: the East Wing (Phase One) with 48 rooms that opened in June 2006, and the slightly more modern West Wing (Phase Two) with 69 rooms that opened in August 2007. Standard, one- bedroom, two-bedroom, and penthouse condo options feature Mexican casual decor, marble bathrooms, and CD/DVD players. Most have fully equipped kitchens and balconies that overlook the ocean for beautiful sunsets, though standard rooms lack both. The friendly staff can arrange golf cart rentals and excursions such as scuba diving or deep-sea fishing in the Caribbean Sea. For those who just want to chill out, the small outdoor pool leads out to a small bar and restaurant. The beaches are great for strolling, and within a few blocks are a number of restaurants and shops, as well as the regular ferry to Cancun.
Hotel Playa La Media Luna

Hotel Playa La Media Luna Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hotel Playa La Media Luna sits at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres along Half Moon Beach. The property’s seclusion offers a tranquil atmosphere, but it’s also not far from the more lively downtown area. The highlights here are the private terraces with hammocks, great views, and fresh ocean breezes. Though the 18 rooms are a bit outdated and plainly decorated, they still retain a hint of tropical charm and are cozy enough for the affordable price. A simple continental breakfast is included for all rooms, while the pricier units -- such as the bungalows -- have a fully equipped kitchenette, Jacuzzi, living room, and dining area. There’s no restaurant on-site, and although there’s a poolside bar, it rarely seems to be open. While there isn't anything spectacular about the hotel itself, its beachfront location is excellent.
Hotel Bahia Chac Chi

Hotel Bahia Chac Chi Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located along Mujeres Bay, Hotel Bahia Chac Chic is close to the lively downtown area and ferry terminal. All 25 rooms are basic and free of frills. Despite being sparsely decorated, they are clean and comfortable and offer flat-screen TVs, work desks, and in-room safes. There are a few other pleasant surprises here including free Wi-Fi, free continental breakfast, and some rooms with fantastic ocean-view balconies. The hotel also has a sleek facade, chic open-air entrance and lobby, and cozy bar/cafe where breakfast is served. The one disappointment is a tiny swimming pool with an interior, shaded courtyard location. Simplicity at this hotel adds up to great value for budget travelers.
Chac Chi Hotel & Suites

Chac Chi Hotel & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Chac Chi Suites & Hotel provides a calmer alternative to the area's larger properties. While it lacks many of the amenities of a large resort, the condo-style units are quite large and clean (if fairly bland, decor-wise), and suites are available with multiple bedrooms, a kitchenette, and balconies or a terrace. The building isn't located directly on the beach (North Beach is about two minutes away by taxi), and the outdoor pool is very small, but the rooftop solarium provides some great views and a Jacuzzi. It's certainly not the most romantic or luxurious option on the island, but it's a decent fit for families traveling on a budget.
Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres

Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The highlight of the Avalon Reef Club is its location; on the island Isla Mujeres, the hotel overlooks beautiful beaches and natural pools on all sides. All 129 rooms have ocean views and though their decor is bland -- lots of beige, minimal furniture, and white stucco walls -- they are clean and well-kept. The light, airy lobby is a bit kitschy (Mayan reliefs on the walls and lots of terra cotta), as are the restaurants, but the hotel's grounds are pristine. Most guests enjoy the secluded feel (and the hotel is only a 10-minute walk to the downtown area), but those looking for a wild spring break vacation may prefer to stay at one of the hotel's sister properties in the Hotel Zone, the Avalon Baccara or the Avalon Grand, which are granted day access to the Reef Club.
Hotel Rocamar

Hotel Rocamar Rating: 2.0 Pearls

The quaint 32-room Hotel Rocamar is located in downtown Isla Mujeres and overlooks the Caribbean Sea. The no-frills property features rooms that are equipped with only the basics -- in-room safe, mini-fridge, and bed (there's no TV or phone) -- and plain decor, save for a few Mexican-style decorations. They are, however, clean and comfortable. Though some pricier units are more spacious and come with kitchenettes, not all of these have air-conditioning, which could certainly be an issue during the hot summer season. Most have terraces with hammocks and excellent ocean views. The bathrooms have mosaic-style tiling, but some have glass walls, which can be awkward for guests who prefer their privacy. It's a simple hotel, and it's not on the beach, but the stunning views alone are worth the relatively affordable price.
