Melia Genova

Melia Genova Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 99-room Melia Genova is an upmarket hotel filled with fine Italian marble, smart Art Deco touches, and modern pieces by renowned Italian artists. The hotel has an imposing facade and interiors are understatedly luxurious. Set in a quieter neighborhood away from "Old Town" Genova, the hotel is still within walking distance of many major attractions. Rooms are fresh and bright with marble bathrooms. The spa might be a little small for an upscale property -- the similarly swank Grand Hotel Savoia on the other end of town is a good alternative.
Royal Hotel Sanremo

Royal Hotel Sanremo Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 126-room Royal Hotel Sanremo is a luxury hotel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea that dates back to 1872. The style is classically elegant with lavishly furnished rooms and plenty of old-world charm. A short walk from the town center, this property has gorgeous sea views, a big outdoor saltwater pool, and modern spa with sauna and hot tub. The hotel lacks a private beach and some rooms are in need of renovation, but there is a lovely restaurant and bar with live piano music on-site. For less extravagant old-world charm, check out the Hotel Paradiso nearby.
Grand Hotel Savoia

Grand Hotel Savoia Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The hotel, built in 1897, has a grand, old-world atmosphere that fits its name, along with some quirky, modern touches that include hot tubs on a rooftop terrace and themed suites. It’s directly across the street from the main railway station and is a short walk to the Old Port, though there is not much in the immediate area. It offers good value for one of few true luxury properties in the city.
Mare Hotel Savona

Mare Hotel Savona Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With its beach-heavy, modern design, Mare Hotel Savona provides a tropical escape on the Mediterranean. Savona is a bit industrial, but the hotel provides a nice spot for a beach vacation and is also a good base for exploring other tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera, such as Bergeggi and Finale Ligure. The on-site restaurants are popular (though a bit pricey), which means snagging a table without a reservation can be somewhat difficult. Rooms on the south side have much better views and are quieter.
La Torretta

La Torretta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 12 rooms at the upscale La Torretta hotel are beautiful with such elegant touches as four-poster beds and tall floral headboards. With a free evening aperitif and a couple of terraces to watch the sun set, it's a particularly good pick for a romantic stay. The bed and breakfast is located on the church square in Manarola, one of five fishing villages that make up Cinque Terre. The marina and train station are a short walk downhill, but there are several stairs to climb at the hotel, which may make it a challenge to navigate for some travelers.
Hotel Cenobio Dei Dogi

Hotel Cenobio Dei Dogi Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The upscale 103-room Hotel Cenobio Dei Dogi offers guests a tranquil setting in the charming town of Camogli, Italy. Rooms are simple but elegantly decorated with white linens and various subtle color schemes. The private beach, outdoor pool, and terrace bar provide stunning views of the sea and surrounding areas. Its proximity to the water and town makes this a popular spot for tourists wanting to relax at the hotel or easily travel to the surrounding areas.
Grand Hotel Miramare

Grand Hotel Miramare Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 84-room Grand Hotel Miramare was built in 1903 as one of the first luxury properties in the area and still retains much of its charm today. This renovated, updated property has an outdoor saltwater pool, a blooming private garden for leisurely strolls, and spa with outdoor gazebo for massages. It's located across the street from a public beach on Golfo del Tigullio, so there are great water views, but no private beach access. Bars and restaurants provide both indoor and outdoor seating. Rooms are elegant with high ceilings and renovated bathrooms, but some guests complain about noise on lower level street facing rooms.
Excelsior Palace Hotel

Excelsior Palace Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 129-room Excelsior Palace Hotel is perched high above the Ligurian Sea with sweeping views. First opened in 1901 under a different name, this hotel has rooms and suites with antique furniture and gold accents creating an elegant and romantic feel, though some less renovated rooms have worn carpet instead of nice hardwood floors. There is an outdoor infinity pool, indoor heated pool, and rocky beach area on-site. Located a short walk from the town of Rapallo, the hotel has a convenient location, but dozens of stairs must be climbed to reach the entrance.
Hotel Porto Roca

Hotel Porto Roca Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Widely considered the best (and most expensive) hotel Monterosso has to offer, the upscale 40-room Hotel Porto Roca has spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding hillsides. Rooms are small and have dated furnishings, but those with seaside balconies are worth the extra cost. The saltwater infinity pool and private beach area are noteworthy features, as is the property’s central location for exploring the other towns of Cinque Terre. If a steep hillside setting is a deal-breaker, consider Il Giardino Incantato; the tiny bed and breakfast doesn't have a pool, but it's a short walk to the beach.
Domina Home Piccolo

Domina Home Piccolo Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Domina Home Piccolo is a modernized historic villa perched on a hillside overlooking the Portofino Gulf. This charming property has a garden leading to private sunbathing terraces and its own pebbly beach (complete with drinks service). Rooms are tasteful but can be on the small side; get one with a big balcony facing the sea to make the most of the location. There is an on-site restaurant and Portofino village is only five minutes away on foot, but note that local winding roads can be dangerous for pedestrians. The nearby Grand Miramare Hotel has a pool and more traditionally styled rooms, but lacks a private beach.
