SIXTY LES

SIXTY LES Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This gorgeous new 141-room boutique has joined other high-end hotels and restaurants that have revitalized the once-gritty Lower East Side neighborhood, which is known for its raucous late-night activity. For well-heeled hipsters looking for downtown action, the cool design, attentive staff, fitness center, and pool combine to make this a very fine place to crash after a night out in skinny jeans.

Hotel On Rivington

Hotel On Rivington Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hotel on Rivington is a secretive hot spot for well-heeled travelers who like their neighborhoods cool and their thread counts high. Sleek and stylish, the monied vibe doesn't exactly mesh with the Lower East Side's immigrant history, and the place is showing some serious wear and tear, but the luxurious rooms and amazing views just might merit the attitude.

Wyndham Garden Chinatown

Wyndham Garden Chinatown Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Wyndham Garden Chinatown is a modern mid-range chain hotel in the heart of bustling Chinatown. Though the hotel is a trek from traditional sights in midtown, it's within easy walking distance of trendy bars and restaurants in Chinatown and on the Lower East Side. Its 106 guest rooms are small but contemporary, and some come with outdoor terraces that look out onto the city.

Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel

Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located well outside the conventional tourist zone in Chinatown -- close to Little Italy -- the 102 clean white guest rooms at the Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel are significantly more stylish than most hotels in its price range. And given its bright fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast, it's an excellent pick.

Holiday Inn NYC - Lower East Side

Holiday Inn NYC - Lower East Side Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This Holiday Inn on Manhattan’s Lower East Side delivers all of the brand staples, as well as streamlined, contemporary -- and even stylish -- design. Spacious rooms feature free Wi-Fi and modern bathrooms; some have excellent views of the Downtown Manhattan and the Freedom Tower. The location is within walking distance of trendy restaurants, the famous Katz's Deli, and five subway lines. On-site features include a business center, meeting space, small fitness center, and an outdoor courtyard. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner, but not lunch, and serves burgers and brews in a kitschy, 50s-inspired atmosphere. Overall, the Holiday Inn is one of the best deals on the Lower East Side -- just know that the location on Delancey Street is busy and noisy.

Off-Soho Suites Hotel

Off-Soho Suites Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Near bars and music venues in the Lower East Side (not SoHo), the 38 clean, stylish guest rooms at the Off-SoHo Suites have either shared or private access to a fully equipped kitchen. It's a fair pick, for the price, but it's rates often near those of fancier hotels on hipper blocks.

Comfort Inn Manhattan Bridge

Comfort Inn Manhattan Bridge Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This Comfort Inn is simple value option with modern decor and few features. Basic but clean rooms are a good price for the location and within walking distance of many downtown locations. The excellent Chinese restaurants and knock-off stores of Chinatown are literally at your doorstop; Little Italy is also around the corner for dining options galore. Guests can walk to the Grand Street subway or bike to Brooklyn using the Citi Bike station across the street, via the Manhattan Bridge. Just avoid parking the car if possible -- daily rates are astronomical. It's also worth considering the nearby Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel, which the local owners also run.

Hotel 91

Hotel 91 Rating: 2.5 Pearls

An affordable but still clean and comfortable option in the crowded-by-day, desolate-by-night, garbage-strewn heart of Chinatown (just outside the Lower East Side nightlife), this 70-room hotel doesn't have much beyond its cramped guest rooms -- no fitness center, restaurant, or Wi-Fi.

GEM Hotel SoHo

GEM Hotel SoHo Rating: 2.5 Pearls

It's not in SoHo -- those swank lounges and fashion boutiques are about a 20- to 30-minute walk away. Rather, these 45 cramped but still comfortable guest rooms are on the border between the East Village and the Lower East Side, which have their own, albeit less swank, lounges and boutiques. It's OK, for the price, but consider Thompson LES.
