The White Barn Inn & Spa

The White Barn Inn & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This renowned inn is one of the premier luxury options in Maine, and offers a true boutique experience in charming Kennebunk. It is housed in a historic building, and so its 26 rooms vary greatly in size. However, they all feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, and classic, elegant decor. The much-acclaimed restaurant serves outstanding (and pricey) seasonal cuisine in an 1820s restored barn, and the spa is arguably one of the best in the region. The waterfront cottages are quite a trek from the main building, so make sure you book a guestroom instead if you want to be closer to the property’s great amenities.
The Tides Beach Club

The Tides Beach Club Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Tides Beach Club in Kennebunkport was fully renovated in 2011, and the vibe evolved from cozy to South Beach-esque and trendy. Two suites designed by Jonathan Adler, spectacular ocean views, and a contemporary restaurant with a sophisticated menu are just some of the upgrades that came with the renovation. The prices are a bit more Manhattan than Maine, but if it's beachfront luxury you’re after, this is it -- The Tides sits on a semi-private three-mile stretch of Goose Rocks Beach.
Captain Lord Mansion

Captain Lord Mansion Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Captain Lord Mansion hotel, just an eight-minute walk from the town center, is a small classic inn featuring Victorian-style rooms. Each room's decor varies slightly, but all feature four-poster beds, numerous paintings, and antique-style Victorian furniture -- cozy to some, gaudy to others. Modern amenities such as iPod docks and flat-screen TVs bring the rooms to this century, and the hotel offers tons of freebies including free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and bicycle rentals. The hotel lacks amenities like a fitness center and a pool (though there is a small spa), so families may consider the nearby (but slightly farther from town) Nonantum Resort.
Hidden Pond

Hidden Pond Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Spread over 60 acres, Hidden Pond resort features 36 suite-like bungalows and two-bedroom cottages. While each have their own personality, they are all bright, homey, and sophisticated, characterized by pops of color and lodge-like touches (such as stone fireplaces adorned with antlers, and a lamp made from a tree branch). The spa is set up to resemble a tree house, and free yoga classes are held at the organic farm (where guests may also pick fresh flowers and veggies). Another outstanding feature is the outdoor bar and grill that sits on a "sand bar," with chairs circled around fire pits. This upscale boutique hotel attracts couples with its tranquil environment and top-notch restaurants, as well as families with its cottages that include full kitchens and washer/dryers. The hotel also provides a free shuttle to the beach, which is just a five-minute drive away.
The Anchorage By the Sea

The Anchorage By the Sea Rating: 3.5 Pearls

As the real estate saying goes, it's all about location, location, location. That saying applies to the 220-room Anchorage by the Sea, a year-round hotel that's on prime beachfront real estate. The hotel is geared toward families, and has two heated pools (indoor and outdoor), three hot tubs, seasonal painting and yoga activities, and a charming restaurant and bar. Minimalist rooms are decorated in white-wood furniture and spurts of blue that are bright and welcoming. Common areas can become noisy and crowded with families. The nearby Beachmere Inn offers a quieter getaway but has more expensive rooms.
Bar Harbor Hotel - Bluenose Inn

Bar Harbor Hotel - Bluenose Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This upper-middle-range hotel is one of the pricier options in Bar Harbor, and one of the only options with expansive views of Frenchman Bay. Rooms have slightly fussy and very dated traditional style (expect lots of floral prints, and wall-to-wall red carpeting), but almost all of them have at least a partial view of the water, and many have fireplaces. Guests can also take in the views over breakfast or dinner at the Looking Glass Restaurant, enjoy piano music in the evenings, or drive three minutes to Downtown Bar Harbor for more dining and entertainment options. Property features include a small spa as well as indoor and outdoor pools. Bar Harbor Inn is a comparable option with even better views, but it's often a tad more expensive.
The Bayview

The Bayview Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Bayview is a traditional, upper-middle-range hotel situated on lovely green oceanfront grounds just outside of downtown Bar Harbor. Though the clean, spacious rooms are a tad bland, few guests seem to notice or mind, thanks to the fact that all have have private porches with gorgeous views of Frenchman Bay. They also have antique-style furniture, comfortable beds, and modern amenities that include flat-screen TVs, microwaves, Keurig coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Townhouses are also available; these include full kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, and private porches with ocean views. Note that the property closes during the winter months.
Parsons Post House Inn

Parsons Post House Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Don't let the intimate size of the Parsons Post House Inn fool you: Most of the cozy rooms have a modern look, sporting a subtle beach theme with comfortable white linens and light sand-colored walls. The bathrooms are clean and a little cramped (counter space is practically non-existent), but they do have soft towels and good water pressure. The small but charming outdoor patio is great for taking advantage of the sea breeze coming from the beach, just a block away. If you're looking for a true Ogunquit experience, this is one of your safest bets. Note that the hotel closes during the winter months. tag:revisit 4/15/2013
Dockside Guest Quarters

Dockside Guest Quarters Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Dockside Guest Quarters hotel has large, bright rooms with a lovely (yet basic) seaside-cottage style. Though the decor in each room varies slightly, most rooms feature shades of blues and yellows, stripes and flower prints, and balconies overlooking the sail boat-dotted water. The hotel lacks amenities like a fitness center and a pool, but guests enjoy perks such as free bicycle rentals, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast in the often-crowded breakfast area.
Portland Regency Hotel and Spa

Portland Regency Hotel and Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Portland Regency Hotel and Spa is housed in a historic building in the heart of Old Port. There are a few stand-out features, including the central location, spa and fitness center, and the popular Armory Lounge. This waterfront hotel has 95 spacious rooms with chain-like decor and nice bathrooms. There are a few great freebies -- such as Wi-Fi, morning coffee brought to the room, and a shuttle for guests -- but some outdated rooms are starting to show wear and tear.
