Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta

Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Fiesta Americana is quite spacious for a resort this close to downtown. A big plus here is that every room has at least a partial ocean view (full-view rooms cost a bit more) -- so you really can't book a bad room. A good selection of restaurants, a decent pool with swim-up bar, and a big stretch of private beach are all positives. But the Fiesta charges for certain amenities that should be free -- namely, use of the fitness center, in-room coffee, and Wi-Fi.
Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With 475 guest rooms distributed across 15 stories on a beachfront near downtown, the Sheraton Buganvilias is a big, busy operation -- yet it's invitingly tranquil in places as well. There is ample lounge seating dotting the lush grounds, and a nice spa offers a relaxing reprieve. With an attractive free-form pool, multiple restaurants, expansive meeting space, and easy access to the charms of Vallarta, this is a great spot for those who like the action close at hand, but also feel the need to escape the hustle. Just don't expect to escape the hustle with a serene beachfront -- the beach here is rocky, public, and teeming with vendors.
Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort

Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 259-room, all-inclusive Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort is priced at the higher end of resorts in the Hotel Zone of Puerto Vallarta, and it scores on some counts but fails on others. The rooms are modern and spacious with some gorgeous ocean views (plus coffeemakers and minibars). Restaurants are varied from an above-average buffet to fine French dining. The infinity edge adults-only pool and a luxe spa are havens from the family-centered kids' club. However, with charges for spotty Wi-Fi and short staffing at the bars, the high price point can be hard to justify.
Sunset Plaza Beach Resort and Spa

Sunset Plaza Beach Resort and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Curvaceous and bright, this upscale sister of the two older Pelican resorts nearby features fabulous views, as this 15-story hotel looms modern and colorful over the low-rise properties around it. Guest rooms and suites are contemporary, stylish, and comfortably spacious -- and all have balconies that overlook the beach below. The hot tub decks and poolside lounge areas also offer spectacular ocean views, with some guests preferring these serene spaces to the narrow beach that is often crowded with vendors.
Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa

Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The three Villa properties, including this one, are timeshares first and hotels second -- so be prepared for an aggressive sales pitch upon checking in. Get past the lobby and you'll find a typical upper-middle-range beach resort with multiple pools, a few dining options, tennis courts, a spa and fitness center. Be warned: Some of the rooms are outdated, and guests say the food is sub-par. But the location -- right by a bus stop that takes you downtown in minutes, and close to the airport -- is prime.
Crown Paradise Club All-Inclusive Resort

Crown Paradise Club All-Inclusive Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

For family fun, this place is hard to beat -- what with the amazing children's pool and slides, the colorful kids' club with covered sand pit, and the Family Rooms designed to sleep two parents and up to three children younger than 12. Beyond the kid stuff, the hotel has clay tennis courts with nighttime lighting, a great beach, and plentiful dining options, along with a small fitness center and tiny spa. The focus is definitely on family here, so couples looking for a romantic getaway may want to choose the adults-only Golden Crown Paradise All-Inclusive Resort instead.
Holiday Inn Puerto Vallarta

Holiday Inn Puerto Vallarta Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This Holiday Inn delivers pretty much everything you could expect from a mid-range hotel in the middle of Hotel Zone. It isn't fancy, secluded, or exclusive, but is simply a well-run, medium-scale (220 rooms and suites) urban beachfront resort hotel. The rooms are contemporary and spacious, with private balconies. Guests looking for a romantic private getaway could probably do better, but friends or families looking for comfort and value should consider it.
Friendly Vallarta Resort

Friendly Vallarta Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 218-room Friendly Vallarta Resort is an all-inclusive three-pearl property on the beach. Prices are on the high side, especially when you factor in the crowds, noisy rooms, and reported sanitary issues with the buffet food. College kids and young families like the three on-site restaurants and two bars -- one of which is located near the sandy beach. There are nice ocean-facing pools and hot tubs, including one pool just for adults. The Costa Sur Resort and Spa offers many of the same amenities with larger suites in a quieter location, though it's farther from the airport.
Golden Crown Paradise All-Inclusive Resort

Golden Crown Paradise All-Inclusive Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

An adults-only, beachfront property, the Golden Crown Paradise All-Inclusive Resort is a dated hotel with some nice features. The 214 rooms and suites might be bland and lacking any strong design element, but the balconies do offer great ocean views. A huge pool and slice of the wide beach with yellow-striped cabanas are ideal for relaxing, but guests complain about the lack of Internet in the rooms. Convenient all-inclusive features include three restaurants, an on-site disco open late, and small spa.
Hacienda Hotel & Spa

Hacienda Hotel & Spa Rating: 2.5 Pearls

By most megaresort standards this all-inclusive is small, with just 155 rooms, and is short on amenities and facilities. But it's a comfy, budget-friendly place near downtown Puerto Vallarta and two blocks from the beach. The resort feels authentic, with terracotta tiling, and Mexican-style decor surrounded by lush landscaping and palm trees. The location directly off the highway can be a bit loud -- as can the music poolside. But for the price it's an excellent option -- the rooms are clean and comfortable, the on-site dining options are plentiful, and the hotel-run beach club offers free non-motorized water sports for guests.
