The James Chicago Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The James is one of Chicago's top luxury hotels, and is located in River North, a block from the Magnificent Mile. The public spaces are modern and sometimes quirky, while the 297 rooms are crisp and clean. They're minimally decorated without being stark, and some have clever design to maximize space, as well as big flat-screen TVs, impressively stocked minibars, and comfortable beds. Bathrooms are modern and minimalist too, but not all have tubs and some are on the small side. In addition to a well-equipped fitness room, the James also has two art galleries along with art and sculpture present throughout the lobby. The hotel is also home to the excellent restaurant, David Burke's Primehouse, and the Primehouse Bar. Appealing hotel extras include a free car service, which can come in handy as parking is quite pricey.

Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago

Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 339-room Trump is one of the top luxury hotels in Chicago, located in a modern glass tower right on the Chicago river and within easy walking distance of the Magnificent Mile. The sleek, glossy decor is subdued and tasteful, and every amenity -- from the Michelin-rated restaurant, to the big indoor pool, to bright fitness center, to the spa -- is first-rate. The huge, tasteful rooms have limestone bathrooms with soaking tubs and floor-to-ceiling windows (often with phenomenal views). Only The Peninsula and The Waldorf can compare.

Sofitel Chicago Water Tower

Sofitel Chicago Water Tower Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The luxurious 415-room Sofitel Chicago, two blocks from the Magnificent Mile, is noteworthy for its sleek modern decor and excellent service. It's a haven for business travelers, with plush white beds in the bright rooms, and everything -- the fitness center, business center, and room service -- available around-the-clock.

Hotel Sax Chicago

Hotel Sax Chicago Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 354-room hotel is centrally located right on the river, minutes from The Loop, and across the street from the iconic House of Blues. It features a modern but smallish fitness center in the basement, many dining and drinking options on-site (including the sexy Crimson Lounge and the Bin 36 restaurant), and in-room spa services. The decor is sleek, modern, and neoclassical -- but many rooms have a view of an eight-story parking garage, which can put a damper on the overall impression. Overall, it's a great pick for those looking for a chic, urban experience smack in the heart of the city. In 2012, the hotel joined the Access family — it was previously a Thompson hotel.

The Westin Chicago River North

The Westin Chicago River North Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Although the 424-room Westin Chicago River North lacks individual charm and character, there are a few things that take it a step beyond your standard hotel-chain property — spectacular views of the river, sleek, contemporary decor, and two popular on-site restaurants. The popular steakhouse Ember Grill and the fine Japanese cuisine at Kamehachi Sushi Bar are both Chicago staples. There isn't much that makes this Westin stand out, but it's still a good pick in the Chicago hotel bunch. Floor-to-ceiling windows give the modern, spacious gym plenty of natural light. Meanwhile, the lobby feels a bit dark, but gives way to a certain chic-ness at night, when it becomes a pricey but fun space for professionals to have drinks and mingle.

Dana Hotel and Spa

Dana Hotel and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 216-room hotel is an urban retreat with zen decor, a spa, a stylish restaurant, and popular lounge, located three blocks from the Magnificent Mile. The hotel's serene vibe continues into the luxurious rooms, which feature hardwood floors, large, spa-inspired showers, plush beds, and floor-to-ceiling windows or balconies. It's one of Chicago's most luxurious boutiques.

Hotel Palomar Chicago

Hotel Palomar Chicago Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 261-room Hotel Palomar is one of the best Kimpton hotels in the city, and the only one in River North, near the Magnificent Mile. Its lovely indoor pool with a sundeck and its free nightly wine hour are both highlights, and the big, stylish rooms are equipped with iPod docks, 37-inch flat-screen TVs, and Etro bath toiletries. All in all, it's a great pick for the price.

Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago - Downtown

Hampton Inn & Suites Chicago - Downtown Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 230-room mid-range hotel is a solid value near the Magnificent Mile. Highlights include the clean, comfortable rooms with flat-screen TVs, the beautiful indoor pool with a skylight, and quality freebies, including free hot breakfasts and free Wi-Fi. But there's a fire station across the street and you can hear the sirens day and night.

Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile

Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 357-room hotel two blocks from the Magnificent Mile has big (if generic) rooms for the price, plus an attractive (albeit small) indoor pool area and a bright, well-equipped fitness center. Mini-fridges and microwaves make it easy to save money on food, and the hotel offers solid freebies — free Wi-Fi and free afternoon cookies. But parking fees are steep, and room service is only available for dinner.
