Ciqala Luxury Suites

Ciqala Luxury Suites Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This contemporary, homey property in residential San Juan is ideal for travelers who don’t mind being removed from the touristy shoreline, though a free beach shuttle is provided. Spacious units range from Studios with kitchenettes to Three-Bedroom Suites with stainless steel kitchens, dining areas, and laundry facilities. In addition to the free breakfast served daily in the SP Lounge, the hotel has a rooftop bar and small infinity pool overlooking San Juan. Ikea-style decor is bright and airy, and business travelers will find plenty of space to pull out the laptop. Weekly food and drink events keep things sociable.
The Condado Plaza Hilton

The Condado Plaza Hilton Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 589 rooms at the Condado Plaza Hilton are inviting and bright, decorated in blues and greens or brilliant reds, and featuring plenty of space. The drawbacks are that the bathrooms are tight and views fluctuate drastically: Some are breathtaking vistas of pristine ocean, others are of nothing more than abandoned hotels and decrepit buildings. There are two decent pools, but the property's small beach fronts a lagoon-like inlet rather than the open ocean. If you're looking for waves, head to Isla Verde (or the hip pool scene at the nearby La Concha) instead.
Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino

Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This big, reliable (and yes, predictable) Sheraton hotel across from Puerto Rico’s Convention Center opened in 2009 as the prototype for the revitalized Starwood brand, and offers 503 modern rooms. Rooms have tub/shower combos, modern amenities, and well-lit work desks; extensive event space includes the largest ballroom in San Juan. A handful of restaurants and bars are available and there are even fewer noteworthy options within walking distance — though it doesn’t take long to taxi to Old San Juan or Condado for more choices (or the beach). It's geared toward business travelers, but those with free time can hit the fourth-floor infinity pool and sun deck with views of the bay. Guests of the Sheraton Club Rooms get access to free breakfast and snacks in the Club Lounge. Wi-Fi is free but parking comes with a daily fee.
Caribe Hilton San Juan

Caribe Hilton San Juan Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The large, 910-room Hilton Caribe mega-resort has a secluded, private man-made beachfront, over 17 acres of tropical gardens, a bird sanctuary, and even the historic Fuerte San Geronimo de Boqueron is on-site (which guests can look at, but not enter). Its peninsula location makes for excellent ocean views, and the large oceanfront pool complex is impressive for the area, with two tiers and a swim-up bar. Rooms are standard Hilton fare, with flat-screen TVs, green accent walls, soft sheets and average bathrooms. However, guests should be aware that the hotel is a popular pre-cruise destination, and at times can be overrun with large crowds of families with children.
El San Juan Resort & Casino

El San Juan Resort & Casino Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The vibe at the 382-room El San Juan Hotel & Casino is that of a fun, self-contained, relaxed party. The property features a lively lobby, a sprawling free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a location right on the clean, white-sand Isla Verde Beach. Rooms are stylish and beach-y, with white bedding and furniture, light wood, bright, tropical accents, and modern touches such as clear lamps and chairs. The bathrooms are modern, too, but aren't exactly spotless or spacious. Just make sure you're happy staying put: There's not much to do nearby, and Old San Juan is at least a $20 cab ride away.
InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino

InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The highlights of this 402-room resort in Isla Verde are the large, low-key beach and inviting pool, which includes Jacuzzis, a rock grotto area with waterfalls, and a swim-up bar. Rooms are chain-like but pleasant enough, with clean white linens, light blue accent walls, and basic shower/tub combos, though there are some signs of wear (the bathroom fixtures in particular could use updating). There are some decent restaurants and bars within walking distance, and Old San Juan is just a short drive away.
Olive Boutique Hotel

Olive Boutique Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 15-room boutique hotel in San Juan was opened by local newlyweds in 2012, and inspired by their travels through Italy, Spain, France, and Morocco. It is already making a name for itself, and the owners have already made improvements based on initial guest feedback (such as enclosing the originally open-layout bathrooms for more privacy, and adding verandas). For better views, guests can head upstairs to the cool rooftop deck with plunge pool for pre- and post-dinner drinks. During the day, most prefer to hit the beach two blocks away. Olive Boutique Hotel appeals to mostly romantics, but business travelers can impress clients here, and may appreciate the free Wi-Fi and easy access to Condado. Free breakfast is served daily.
San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Situated right on the beach in Condado, the Marriott Resort & Casino is a step above some other hotels in the neighborhood: The grounds and the hotel -- including the pools, the tennis courts, and the spa -- are well-kept, and the upscale rooms feature warm colors, flat-screen TVs, and large bathrooms with granite vanities. Though there is a casino on-site, the hotel also caters to families, with amenities such as a game room, laundry facilities, and a pool with a waterslide. But some have complained of hearing noise from the casino in the rooms on the lower floors, and fees for extras such as Wi-Fi and beach chairs are annoying.
Hotel El Convento

Hotel El Convento Rating: 4.0 Pearls

There is nothing quite like European-style El Convento in the medieval city of Old San Juan. It was a convent for 252 years, and today it's the neighborhood's principal upscale hotel, offering 58 elegant rooms and suites filled with Spanish antique treasures and modern amenities. Its history is present everywhere, from the exposed wood beams to the 350-year-old Nispero tree rising high above the romantic courtyard. A nightly wine and cheese reception takes place on the terrace, allowing guests (mostly couples) to mingle while overlooking views of San Juan Bay. The main restaurant offers al fresco fine dining in the courtyard; other features include the beautiful sun terrace and small outdoor pool. Service is a priority here, and it shows.
SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel

SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The draw of SOFO CasaBlanca Hotel is its location -- right in the middle of historic Old San Juan, near countless restaurants, nightclubs, and shops. But once you get past the funky, chic decor of the lobby, the hallways are worn and musty, and the rooms -- despite the cute, eclectic decor -- are on the small side, with thin walls, tiny bathrooms (that have temperamental water pressure and temperature), and little light. Perks like free breakfast and Internet add value, but it's worth comparing rates with The Gallery Inn and Villa Herencia.
