Four Seasons Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto

Four Seasons Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Four Seasons in Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto reflects the legendary service and commitment to quality of this luxury brand. Upscale touches are everywhere, from the beautifully manicured grounds to the sleek wood-paneled lobby to the spacious rooftop pool with free sunscreen. Rooms are bright and modern with floor-to-ceiling windows, and offer marble bathrooms, deep soaking tubs, and flat-screen TVs. Everything from the spa to the pool is top-notch, but spa treatments are expensive and there is a daily fee for Wi-Fi, making some feel nickel-and-dimed. The hotel is located right off the freeway, and while rooms are well-insulated to shield the noise, some still have unappealing freeway views.

The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay

The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The romantic 261-room Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay serves the Ritz-Carlton name well, offering stunning rooms, a large spa, and beautiful bay views -- though the fog sometimes makes it difficult to get a good glimpse. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, the hotel has excellent outdoor facilities including fire pits facing the ocean and a manicured 18-hole golf course. Rooms are spacious, elegant, yet simple, with beautiful marble bathrooms and quaint shutters covering windows. Fire pit rooms come with -- you guessed it -- cozy outdoor fire pits looking out onto the rocky coast. But the on-site restaurants lack "wow " factor and are expensive, and the indoor pool is lackluster.

Rosewood Sand Hill

Rosewood Sand Hill Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The stylish and modern Rosewood Sand Hill leaves very little to be desired for either business travelers or families. The 121 rooms are bright and airy, complete with HD TVs with surround sound, spacious showers (the rain showerheads have fantastic pressure), and large, sunny patios and balconies with views of the beautiful natural surroundings. Michelin-starred dining at Madera, a luxury spa, stunning landscaping, and a family-friendly outdoor pool round out the experience. It's one of the top luxury properties in Silicon Valley, and proves why the Rosewood brand's reputation is well-deserved.

W Silicon Valley

W Silicon Valley Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The W Silicon Valley is located in Newark, a quiet and family-friendly area that is fairly isolated from local attractions. This 174-room hotel offers the sleek and stylish rooms that are characteristic of the W brand, along with a secluded outdoor pool and popular bar. All rooms here are suites -- with wet bars, mini-fridges, and lounge areas -- but the living area isn't separate from the bedroom. The (somewhat minimal) action of Silicon Valley is located a 20-minute drive away in Palo Alto, but the W does offer nice perks such as a 24-hour fitness center, outdoor fire pit, and a pet-friendly attitude.

Sofitel San Francisco Bay

Sofitel San Francisco Bay Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located on a serene lagoon, the 421-room Sofitel San Francisco Bay is a convenient choice for business travelers that want to be near the airport and freeway. Rooms are spacious and offer nice touches like flat-screen TVs and Keurig coffeemakers, but design-wise are on the bland side. On the other hand the lobby is airy and attractive with plenty of white marble and fresh flowers. Perks include a nice outdoor pool with peaceful views of the lagoon, along with a restaurant serving California-inspired French cuisine, called Bay 223. While the free shuttle to San Francisco International Airport is convenient, there are pesky fees for Wi-Fi and some leisure travelers might wish they were closer to the action of San Francisco, a 30-minute drive away.

Garden Court Hotel

Garden Court Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Garden Court Hotel is a standout boutique property in Downtown Palo Alto. The hotel's beautiful rooms are the highlight; they have elegant white-and-blue decor, upscale amenities, marble bathrooms, and in many, balconies overlooking the quaint courtyard. Property features include an upscale Italian restaurant, 7,000 square feet of meeting space, and a small fitness center. Though there is no spa, the hotel can arrange in-room massages, and owners can bring pets for a one-time fee (which covers pet-friendly amenities such as beds and treats). Those looking for more features -- such as a spa and a pool -- may consider the nearby, 200-room Four Seasons or the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, but guests return to the Garden Court for its elegant rooms and intimate vibe.

Domain Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Domain Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Domain Hotel is a 136-room converted motel in Sunnyvale that has been significantly spruced up -- colorful rooms have funky decor and high-tech gadgets, the pool is nice and secluded, and freebies include Wi-Fi and parking. Unfortunately this hotel can't escape its structure, with some rooms that only have windows overlooking the lobby and others that are subject to street noise. The hotel is convenient for business travelers and offers perks like iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and an outdoor heated pool, but the fitness center is cramped and there have been some complaints of noisy air-conditioning and heating units. The stylish cafe and bar called Bytes is a nice touch and offers free breakfast.

Avatar Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Hotel

Avatar Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 168-room Avatar Hotel is a 1960s-style motel that has undergone a fun redesign: think funky furniture, shag carpets, and glass cases of toy robots. But despite the modern furnishings with lively colors, many old problems remain, including rooms and windows opening into outdoor hallways -- which results in less privacy -- as well as cramped bathrooms. Perks here include an outdoor heated pool, bright fitness center, and the up-to-date technology expected in a Silicon Valley Hotel. Wi-Fi here is free, and rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and spacious work desks. While the Avatar Hotel attracts mostly business travelers for its central Santa Clara location, the close proximity to the Great America Theme Park is nice for families too.

Moorpark Hotel

Moorpark Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 79-room mid-range hotel is part of the boutique chain Joie de Vivre. Rooms don't have as much character as those of other properties in the brand, and decor is basic, with shades of red and a corporate feel. All are contemporary, though, and feature large flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Hotel features include a tasty restaurant, free underground parking, a fitness center, and a standout outdoor pool, with upscale cabanas and a Jacuzzi. Though there is not much within walking distance of the hotel, it is conveniently located just off of Highway 280, so guests can easily travel to spots such as Santana Row (a cluster of restaurants and shops), Downtown San Jose, and the airport. Overall, the Moorpark offers solid value.

Creekside Inn

Creekside Inn Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 136-room Creekside Inn along Matadero Creek in Palo Alto is a functional mid-range option. It looks a bit like a motel from the outside, but the property is pleasant, with tall, shady trees, ivy-covered pathways, and flowered grounds leading to a lovely courtyard with a round, stone fountain. Rooms are comfortable, with chain-like decor but nice amenities, including balconies, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and microwaves. The bathrooms are basic and clean, but could use an overhaul. The fitness center and pool are both small but useful, and the neighboring Driftwood Deli is convenient. One rare feature unique to the inn is a charging station for electric cars, an increasingly common site in eco-conscious California. The area around the hotel, which includes an auto repair shop, is more residential than it is quaint.
