Hilton Charlotte Center City

Hilton Charlotte Center City Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hilton Charlotte Center City is one of Charlotte's best upscale hotels, with an excellent Uptown location within walking distance of tons of sights and museums. The 400 rooms are stylish, with pops of color and attractive artwork on the walls (not your typical hotel prints). The bathrooms are also stylish, but small, with spacious walk-in showers. The hotel is a nice value for Hilton Honors members, but those who are non-members are required to pay an extra fee for Wi-Fi and use of the attached YMCA next door (the hotel does not have its own fitness center).

Charlotte Marriott City Center

Charlotte Marriott City Center Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 434-room Marriott is a notch above your typical chain hotel -- the spacious rooms may have somewhat chain-like decor (lots of golds and dark wood), but they come complete with high-tech amenities (such as iHome docks and flat-screen TVs). There's also a large heated pool and whirlpool, a fitness center packed with modern machines, and a renowned restaurant on-site. Its location in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, close to major tourist attractions, restaurants and bars, is a huge plus -- but you'll have to pay for Internet access and parking.

Omni Charlotte Hotel

Omni Charlotte Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upper-mid-range business hotel is centrally located in the heart of downtown Charlotte, two blocks from the Convention Center and the Time Warner Cable Arena. Rooms have the standard chain hotel amenities (flat-screen TVs, minibars, free morning papers), plush white bedding, sophisticated (if slightly generic) neutral decor, and tiny bathrooms. The pool is outdoors and just average, the restaurant is adequate, and the fitness center is tiny, but the property offers the convenience of being connected to a shopping mall with over 30 stores and several dining options in the same building. However, be ready to pay for parking and Wi-Fi, and possibly to hear the neighbor’s conversations.

The Westin Charlotte

The Westin Charlotte Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 700-room Westin Charlotte has a hard time standing out from any other mid-level chain. As always, the chain's Heavenly Beds are comfortable, but the furniture throughout the rest of the room is dinged and slightly showing its age. Fitness buffs will love the fitness center, but the pool area (while clean) is small and narrow. It would be strictly a business traveler's mainstay if not for its convenient location within walking distance of stadiums, restaurants, attractions, and a light rail stop with access to downtown.

Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Charlotte Gateway Village

Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Charlotte Gateway Village Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel right next to Johnson and Wales University in Uptown Charlotte has a convenient location and updated rooms with large flat-screen TVs and fun, modern decor (think chocolate brown mixed with lime green and slate blue). Standard rooms lack mini-fridges and microwaves, and the bathroom vanities are oddly blocked by the toilets. However, with a modern fitness center and an outdoor saltwater pool, the hotel is a good value (though extras like Wi-Fi and parking require an additional fee).
