Gramercy Park Hotel

Gramercy Park Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Gramercy Park Hotel currently sets the bar for New York cool -- hence the celebrities in the lounge and the paparazzi on the sidewalk. It offers ultra-luxe but small rooms done up in high Boho-chic style, a gorgeous gym, an acclaimed Italian trattoria, and a great rooftop bar. True, even guests sometimes feel excluded from the glamour-fest in the bar. But the place is utterly unique.

Wythe Hotel

Wythe Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With a hopping rooftop bar boasting jaw-dropping views of Manhattan, a wonderful restaurant, and cutting-edge industrial design, the Wythe is a destination unto itself. It’s located near the subway as well as dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops in the heart of trendy Williamsburg. Rooms are spacious and have high pine ceilings, reclaimed wood furnishings, and great amenities, including flat-screen TVs; local, hand-made toiletries; free Wi-Fi, and radiant floor heating. But noise can be a problem, and the lobby and the elevators can get crowded with non-guests on weekends.

The Empire Hotel

The Empire Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

For the price, you'll be hard-pressed to find this level of on-site amenities at any other New York hotel. The Empire's rooftop bar and pool, both with excellent views of the upscale Upper West Side, make this 422-room hotel one of the city's best values, despite the small rooms.

Ink48

Ink48 Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Quiet, stylish, and a 15-minute walk from touristy Times Square (and the subway) -- Ink48 (opened September 2009) is on the far western reaches of Hell's Kitchen, an increasingly fashionable but somewhat desolate neighborhood. Its solid service, gorgeous rooftop lounge, free wine receptions, and pet-friendly features make it a great choice, as well as its full-service spa.

The Maritime Hotel

The Maritime Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Housed in a unique building in the heart of artsy Chelsea -- near the clubs and designer flagships of the Meatpacking District -- the 120-room, nautical-themed Maritime boutique hotel offers luxury-level comfort at a very reasonable price (thanks, in part, to its slip off the "cool kid" radar since 2003 and especially after the Standard hotel opened in 2009).

Hotel On Rivington

Hotel On Rivington Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hotel on Rivington is a secretive hot spot for well-heeled travelers who like their neighborhoods cool and their thread counts high. Sleek and stylish, the monied vibe doesn't exactly mesh with the Lower East Side's immigrant history, and the place is showing some serious wear and tear, but the luxurious rooms and amazing views just might merit the attitude.

SIXTY SoHo

SIXTY SoHo Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A 100-room boutique with an inventive design, attentive service, a chic restaurant, and an exclusive rooftop bar, SIXTY SoHo epitomizes swank, SoHo hip. Its location amidst prime shopping, dining, and all-night debauchery helps keep it at the top of the cool meter.

Hudson Hotel

Hudson Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Steps from Central Park and five subway lines, the 807-room Hudson has a prime location. But beyond its surreal, Philippe Starck design and four scenester bars, it's actually a remodeled Y.M.C.A. with very tiny rooms. For bigger rooms, check out 6 Columbus.

Library Hotel

Library Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A homey, 60-room, literary-themed boutique, located down the block from New York's famous Public Library, and among Midtown East's corporate skyscrapers. It's one of New York's best values, mostly because of the perks: an upscale bistro on the ground floor, a lively bar on the penthouse floor, free Wi-Fi, free gym passes, and free daily pastries, wine, and cheese.
