The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort

The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This luxurious 120-room enclave is located in posh Punta Mita, and smartly sited on 22 acres amid undulating fairways and verdant tropical gardens. It's one of the most luxurious properties in the region, and every element is stunning: the three fabulous beachside pools, the acres of peaceful gardens, the ultra-luxurious spa, and the immaculate rooms that look straight out of a decor magazine. The stretch of white-sand beach on-site is interspersed with rocky coves, and there are a couple of pretty little islets just offshore -- as well as the Mariettas Islands, a marine preserve, a few miles farther out to sea.
Four Seasons Punta Mita

Four Seasons Punta Mita Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Four Seasons is one of the grand dames in Riviera Nayarit. It’s been around for over two decades, but still wows with its manicured grounds, elegant rooms, outstanding restaurants, and slew of activities both for adults and kids. Its location in exclusive Punta Mita means guests won’t get to experience much of the local culture, but the hotel is a short drive from quaint little villages full of Mexican flavor.
Villa la Estancia Beach Resort & Spa

Villa la Estancia Beach Resort & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A few yards north of its sister Villa group hotel, the Flamingo, the Villa la Estancia shares a basic architectural form, an elegant, innovative spa, and one of the finest stretches of beach on the north side of Bahia Banderas. The Estancia, however, is not a timeshare but a group of privately owned condos -- so guests don't get the selling speeches as much as they get at the other property. While attractive, and offering amenities such as a luxury spa, superb fitness center, and delicious restaurant, it's hard to see what sets this Villa apart from the others to make it a luxury resort, which it aims to be.
Hotel Cinco

Hotel Cinco Rating: 4.5 Pearls

There are two Punta Mitas: inside the fence and outside the fence. Inside the fence are five-star hotels, multi-million dollar homes, and Jack Nicklaus-designed links. Outside the fence is a scruffy little town called Anclote, with a few high-end properties. One such property is the Hotel Cinco (formerly, the Hotel des Artistes), a 12-suite luxury boutique hotel on the beach, with two pools, a gym, and the Punta Mita branch of Puerto Vallarta's finest restaurant, the Café Des Artistes, on the ground floor. For those seeking a luxurious Punta Mita vacation without fencing themselves off from Mexican reality, this is a great spot.
Marival Residences & World Spa

Marival Residences & World Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A half-hour drive from downtown Puerto Vallarta and a half mile from the beach, the Marival Residences & World Spa is not the place to go if you're in the mood for a beach-lounging, party-hopping Mexican getaway. It is, however, the place to go for laid-back luxury, residential-style suites, modern amenities, and an impressive array of all-inclusive features. Comprised of 169 suites, penthouses, or private villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms (and all featuring spacious terraces with garden, pool, or ocean views), Marival Residences is an excellent option for families and couples alike seeking a little sun-soaked spoiling.
Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This luxurious, 267-room all-inclusive resort in Nuevo Vallarta is a sophisticated and serene option in the greater Puerto Vallarta area. Every room here is a suite, offering extra living space, a balcony, ocean views, and luxurious touches such as Nespresso machines. The impressive features include an infinity pool with three levels overlooking the beach, a decadent spa with 20 treatment rooms, and four upscale (and pricey) restaurants. There's little wrong with it, except for the fee for Wi-Fi.
Grand Luxxe

Grand Luxxe Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Grand Luxxe is one of the many Mayan properties, a group of time-shares in the area. Of all of them, Grand Luxxe is the most posh (thus the name). From the inspiring design throughout the resort to the state-of-the-art golf course and fitness center to the huge rooms and suites with gigantic private terraces, this place is top-notch design-wise. For guests looking to relax at a beachside resort, this is a great pick. But it's a bit far from Puerto Vallarta, so don't expect to find anything outside the property. Also, it would be a good idea to call before booking to find out how construction is going -- the hotel is building a new tower -- as guests say it is quite loudtag:revisit 11/15/13. Also know that this is not an all-inclusive, since it's a time-share, and the on-site restaurants can be pricey.
The Grand Bliss

The Grand Bliss Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Grand Bliss is a step up from the nearby Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta, in terms of room and suite size, elegance, and exclusivity. A minor flaw at this chic, high-end time-share with hotel options is that it currently depends on the Grand Mayan and the other adjacent properties -- the Mayan Palace and the Grand Luxxe -- for most of its facilities. The restaurants, fitness center, and spa are located at the sister resorts, but there is an appealing pool, snack bar, and lobby bar on-site. Highlights here also include gorgeous gardens, an inviting beach, and soothing decor made up of natural materials.
The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort

The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Grand Mayan’s pool complex alone will convince most to stay here: It includes a massive sprawling main pool, fun kiddy pool and kid-friendly waterpark, large Mayan-ruin-themed waterslide for all ages, and excellent wave pool, topped off by a sparkling-blue lazy river that peacefully winds throughout the pristine property, which is complete with manicured lawns, towering palms, and native plantings. But the perks don't stop there. The rooms are spacious, handsome and comfortable as well, and the beach is a stunner -- as are the world-class golf course, exquisite spa, and even the ultra-modern fitness center. Just keep in mind, however, that those smiling resort employees are selling time-shares, and the consistent sales pitches may be too relaxation-impeding for some. A further (though temporary) impediment is the consistent development in the area, which leads to bothersome construction noise at times. tag:revisit 6/1/2013
Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta

Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Occidental Grand is a small beachfront all-inclusive (by megaresort standards) centrally located in Nuevo Vallarta. It has many of the amenities found in larger resorts, including an adults-only pool and a kiddy pool, four restaurants, a supervised kids’ club, and a sandy beach with loungers, straw umbrellas, and a snack bar. However, there’s no spa, Wi-Fi is not free (except for the Royal Club guests), and some king beds are actually two twins pushed together. Rooms have contemporary decor and feel spacious and modern, with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks (in most rooms), but very few rooms have balconies, and room service is only available for Royal Club guests. It’s cheaper than neighboring Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, but it’s worth comparing prices with other resorts in the area.
