The Royal Playa del Carmen

The Royal Playa del Carmen Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This adults-only, luxury all-inclusive property with 507 rooms appeals to both 20- and 30-something couples. A particular draw of this resort is its proximity to the nightlife of downtown Playa del Carmen, especially bustling 5th Avenue, with the party-oriented will appreciate. But the gorgeous stretch of beach and the sophisticated rooms with two-person jetted tubs means romantic-minded couples will be pleased here as well. The range of features is, unsurprisingly, extensive, including seven restaurants and seven bars, an Olympic-sized pool, a wedding center, a spa, and daily entertainment.
The Palm at Playa

The Palm at Playa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Introduced in 2013 and debuting Playa del Carmen’s largest rooftop terrace, The Palm at Playa is a modish, 69-room boutique just blocks from the beach. Rooms are large, featuring hip, mid-century decor; most have huge two-person walk-in showers, lounge areas, and large wet bars. Designed for the cool kids, the expansive rooftop terrace has an infinity pool, large hot tub, and bar with panoramic views. There are also a small spa, gym, and garden grounds to help guests relax after partying all night at the club across the street or rooftop disco.
Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort & Spa

Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 672-room Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort and Spa is a hacienda-like big resort outside of Playa del Carmen. There are a plethora of options: nine bars, seven restaurants, 12 pools, and a variety of sports on-site (tennis, scuba lessons, a fitness center, and more). The resort is meticulously manicured and laid out around a network of pools and outdoor lounge areas. Multiple guests have noted that upgrading to platinum status can significantly cut check-in time and provide access to more desirable rooms. Rooms are contemporary and chic with modern bathrooms; some rooms are swim-out. There is a spa with indoor pool and big fitness center, but there's a fee for internet and the buffet restaurants receive mixed reviews.
The Royal Suites Yucatan by Palladium

The Royal Suites Yucatan by Palladium Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 130-room Royal Suites Yucatan is the smallest, quietest, and most luxurious resort in the five-resort Grand Palladium Riviera Maya complex, and the only one for adults only. Located along the beautiful Akumal coastline between Tulum and Cancun, this upscale resort gives guests an all-inclusive experience with more food an drink options than you can count on both hands, all-day and night activities, soft sand and coral rock beaches, wildlife, a huge hydrotherapy-based spa with gym (access for a fee), and relaxing nature-filled grounds. While Royal Suites guests get full access to the features at the sister resorts, the reverse is not true. The rooms have much more contemporary decor than what is found at the sister properties, and the lagoon-facing Mayan Suites here are among the nicest accommodations in the entire complex. Just note that the property is sprawling and it's a trek to the beach, though shuttle service is available.
Desire Resort & Spa Riviera Maya

Desire Resort & Spa Riviera Maya Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Desire Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive, couples-only, clothing-optional resort that attracts a range of couples, from older married couples to young nudists to swingers. This is a place only for those interested in a raucous vacation (sex is allowed in some public spaces, such as the whirlpool area and the Sin Room) -- but as a four-pearl resort, it offers a wide array of amenities: There is a nice pool and a large whirlpool (both with ocean views), a well-equipped fitness center, a small spa with treatments for two, and four restaurants. But rooms are a little smaller than at other similarly billed hotels, and the explicit sexual atmosphere is not for everyone.
Hotel Riu Yucatan

Hotel Riu Yucatan Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Hotel Riu Yucatan is an upper-mid-range, all-inclusive resort on the beach that attempts to please everyone, but often falls short. Wristbands are required of all guests and though there are several restaurants and bars, the food is mostly bland and the drinks are watered down. An upgrade to a Suite is required if you want a bathroom door; liquor dispensers on the wall might be unappealing for families (but are a nice surprise for partiers). The white sandy beach is clean and there are two outdoor swimming pools, plus a pool with a swim-up bar and a small pool in the kids' club. It may be worth comparing rates at Hotel Riu Tequila across the street; rates are slightly lower and you get access to everything offered at Riu Yucatan.
Grand Bahia Principe Tulum

Grand Bahia Principe Tulum Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With 978 rooms, the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum is the second largest property in a four-resort complex. It's ideal for friends and couples who want a basic all-inclusive experience and a beautiful stretch of beach. Simple rooms are spacious (if slightly dated) and feature minibars and private outdoor space. With two pools, a spa, 10 restaurants and bars, Dolphinarium, and access to the golf club and Hacienda shopping plaza, this place is packed with everything you expect to find at a large upper-middle-range resort. For proximity to family-friendly features, check out sister property, Grand Coba. For an indulgent adults-only escape, upgrade to Luxury Sian Ka'an.
Occidental Grand Xcaret & Royal Club

Occidental Grand Xcaret & Royal Club Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 789-room Occidental Grand Xcaret and Royal Club is a mega-sized, upper-middle-range, all-inclusive resort located five to 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen on 25 acres near Xcaret Park, an eco-archaeological theme park. Though it's not beachfront, there is a sandy manmade lagoon where guests can swim and get the beach vibe, as well as five large swimming pools with plenty of loungers. A river runs through the well-kept grounds and small Mayan ruins can be seen from the property. There are 11 restaurants, nine bars, and one disco though food quality is inconsistent. Clean rooms have updated traditional style, flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars (for no extra fee), and balconies. The Royal Club -- the upgraded membership-only Vacation Club within the resort -- offers additional perks like a private pool and restaurant. There are tennis courts, a well-stocked gym, and nightly live entertainment on-site.
Hotel B Cozumel

Hotel B Cozumel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hotel B has everything a hotel needs to draw a young, hip crowd: a lounge-y beach, spacious rooms with great amenities, a gorgeous infinity-edge pool, a hopping bar with great mojitos, and yoga classes several times a week. Everything here is trendy, but that doesn’t come at the cost of sustainability, social responsibility, or local culture -- the property is decorated top to bottom with traditional Mexican touches with a contemporary twist and crafts made by Mexican artisans. Add this to great rates and a fabulous restaurant, and you’ve got a resort that's a very attractive alternative to the dozens of all-inclusive properties lining this part of the island.
