The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort

The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This luxurious 120-room enclave is located in posh Punta Mita, and smartly sited on 22 acres amid undulating fairways and verdant tropical gardens. It's one of the most luxurious properties in the region, and every element is stunning: the three fabulous beachside pools, the acres of peaceful gardens, the ultra-luxurious spa, and the immaculate rooms that look straight out of a decor magazine. The stretch of white-sand beach on-site is interspersed with rocky coves, and there are a couple of pretty little islets just offshore -- as well as the Mariettas Islands, a marine preserve, a few miles farther out to sea.

Four Seasons Punta Mita

Four Seasons Punta Mita Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Four Seasons is one of the grand dames in Riviera Nayarit. It’s been around for over two decades, but still wows with its manicured grounds, elegant rooms, outstanding restaurants, and slew of activities both for adults and kids. Its location in exclusive Punta Mita means guests won’t get to experience much of the local culture, but the hotel is a short drive from quaint little villages full of Mexican flavor.

Vallarta Gardens Resort & Spa

Vallarta Gardens Resort & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Vallarta Gardens Resort & Spa features three- and four-bedroom, two-story villas overlooking a curvy swimming pool and small private beach. Located about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta near the town of La Cruz de Huanacatle, this resort offers a peaceful escape from the bustle of Puerto Vallarta. Villa interiors are chic and stylishly contemporary with gourmet kitchens, flat-screen TVs, media rooms, free Wi-Fi, laundry rooms, and secure garages. Some villas have private pools and rooftop Jacuzzis with sweeping views out to the Pacific Ocean. Additional perks include a lavish spa and sunny fitness room. For a family or group looking to rent a large house rather than rooms in a hotel, this is a fabulous option.

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This luxurious, 267-room all-inclusive resort in Nuevo Vallarta is a sophisticated and serene option in the greater Puerto Vallarta area. Every room here is a suite, offering extra living space, a balcony, ocean views, and luxurious touches such as Nespresso machines. The impressive features include an infinity pool with three levels overlooking the beach, a decadent spa with 20 treatment rooms, and four upscale (and pricey) restaurants. There's little wrong with it, except for the fee for Wi-Fi.

Grand Luxxe

Grand Luxxe Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Grand Luxxe is one of the many Mayan properties, a group of time-shares in the area. Of all of them, Grand Luxxe is the most posh (thus the name). From the inspiring design throughout the resort to the state-of-the-art golf course and fitness center to the huge rooms and suites with gigantic private terraces, this place is top-notch design-wise. For guests looking to relax at a beachside resort, this is a great pick. But it's a bit far from Puerto Vallarta, so don't expect to find anything outside the property. Also, it would be a good idea to call before booking to find out how construction is going -- the hotel is building a new tower -- as guests say it is quite loud. Also know that this is not an all-inclusive, since it's a time-share, and the on-site restaurants can be pricey.

The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort

The Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Grand Mayan’s pool complex alone will convince most to stay here: It includes a massive sprawling main pool, fun kiddy pool and kid-friendly waterpark, large Mayan-ruin-themed waterslide for all ages, and excellent wave pool, topped off by a sparkling-blue lazy river that peacefully winds throughout the pristine property, which is complete with manicured lawns, towering palms, and native plantings. But the perks don't stop there. The rooms are spacious, handsome and comfortable as well, and the beach is a stunner -- as are the world-class golf course, exquisite spa, and even the ultra-modern fitness center. Just keep in mind, however, that those smiling resort employees are selling time-shares, and the consistent sales pitches may be too relaxation-impeding for some. A further (though temporary) impediment is the consistent development in the area, which leads to bothersome construction noise at times.

Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta

Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Occidental Grand is a small beachfront all-inclusive (by megaresort standards) centrally located in Nuevo Vallarta. It has many of the amenities found in larger resorts, including an adults-only pool and a kiddy pool, four restaurants, a supervised kids’ club, and a sandy beach with loungers, straw umbrellas, and a snack bar. However, there’s no spa, Wi-Fi is not free (except for the Royal Club guests), and some king beds are actually two twins pushed together. Rooms have contemporary decor and feel spacious and modern, with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks (in most rooms), but very few rooms have balconies, and room service is only available for Royal Club guests. It’s cheaper than neighboring Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, but it’s worth comparing prices with other resorts in the area.

Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta

Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta Rating: 4.0 Pearls

One of the most striking elements of the Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta (formerly the Palace Resort Vallarta) is its soaring lobby, with two huge installations made with LP covers and instruments. However, the rest of the resort is no less attractive, with two free-form pools, a spa featuring ocean views, and several restaurants offering a range of cuisines. The hopping bars, nightly entertainment and contemporary rooms with high-tech amenities, funky rock-inspired decor, and double-jetted tubs attract young couples and groups, while the lively pools (including a shallow one for kids), varied dining options, and pretty beach draw families. There’s free Wi-Fi, purified water on tap, and a wide array of amenities, but rooms are a tad smaller than those found in other resorts in the area.

Dreams Villamagna Nuevo Vallarta -- All-Inclusive

Dreams Villamagna Nuevo Vallarta -- All-Inclusive Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The rooms here are attractive -- cool, with hip furniture, freestanding deep bathtubs, and Jacuzzis on private decks. But you have to specify you want an ocean view, or you may be looking at the mountains (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Bel Air Collection Resort & Spa Vallarta

Bel Air Collection Resort & Spa Vallarta Rating: 3.5 Pearls

In the small crowd of all-inclusives at the far north end of Nuevo Vallarta, this one stands out, for a number of reasons: the gorgeous infinity pool, the spacious, elegant gardens, the attention to detail in design, the a la carte menu options in the all-inclusive package, and, generally speaking, the ambience. From the moment you pass the two story, glass-enclosed spa by the gate, you’re in an atmosphere of luxurious serenity. Most every facility -- the spa, the fitness center, the sushi bar -- is at least partly outside. So this is a great pick for guests looking for a true beachside experience.
