The Modern Honolulu

The Modern Honolulu Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 353-room Modern Honolulu is a chic hotel catering to youthful guests with its gorgeous outdoor pools with live music, bars, and lounging areas. This is a luxury property with lots of amenities, including a spa, exercise room, and lobby bar along with some extra notable features including a trendy nightclub and Iron Chef-endorsed sushi restaurant. Rooms are fresh, white, and beachy; some have balconies with water views. The beach is an eight-minute walk away. Guests looking for something closer to the water may want to consider The Royal Hawaiian which is right on the beach.

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Of the three luxury hotels in Waikiki -- the Moana Surfrider and the Halekulani are the others -- the 528-room Royal Hawaiian provides the most stunning design, the warmest service, and a solid collection of free little extras, turndown treats, and welcome leis.

Halekulani

Halekulani Rating: 4.5 Pearls

One of the island's best hotels, with 456 large, luxury-packed rooms, top restaurants with gorgeous views, a notable spa, fastidious service, and a former Miss Hawaii dancing the hula nightly. Too bad the property's formal, understated elegance can sometimes feel cold.

Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki

Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Every one of the 541 rooms and suites at the upscale Hawaii Prince Hotel has an ocean view, overlooking the picturesque Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, and each room's large bay windows open wide to let in Pacific breezes. The hotel is next door to the 76-acre Ala Moana Beach Park (and its half-mile beach), two minutes from the convention center, and a 15-minute walk from the heart of Waikiki. It's an excellent choice for business travelers as well as golfers, who will likely enjoy the hotel's golf course and academy.

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

As Waikiki's first hotel, the 1901 plantation-style oceanfront Moana Surfrider offers a dose of historic charm on one of the nicest -- albeit most congested -- stretches of Waikiki Beach. Small rooms are offset by impressive public spaces, including an outdoor courtyard with live nightly music beneath a sweeping banyan tree, and an enormous spa and fitness center.

Hotel Renew by Aston

Hotel Renew by Aston Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A top pick for those who want more than a budget hotel but less than a mega resort, this affordable, 72-room boutique a block from the beach is high on style, but short on amenities.

Waikiki Parc Hotel

Waikiki Parc Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

With a branch of Nobu in the lobby, a beach across the street, and signing privileges at its adjacent high-end sister Halekulani, this well-priced boutique hotel appeals to foodies and families. The fairly simple rooms have high-def, flat-panel TVs (some have spectacular views) and the service is friendly, if far less doting, than at its sibling.

Ramada Plaza Waikiki

Ramada Plaza Waikiki Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 198-room Ramada Plaza Waikiki is a mid-range chain located across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village and near the Hawaii Convention Center. Rooms are basic in decor and furniture could use an update, but there are flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers in all rooms and some have big balconies. Suites have kitchenettes with microwaves and stovetop ranges. There is an outdoor pool and sundeck, but the beach is a 10-minute walk away. A Chinese/breakfast buffet restaurant is connected to the hotel. The stylish Coconut Waikiki Hotel may be a better option for guests looking for a trendier hotel.

New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel

New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 125-room, mid-range New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel is family oriented, and located right on Kaimana Beach, one of the island's best swimming beaches. It's outside the main bustle of Waikiki (a plus for many), and Kapiolani Park and the Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium are practically next door. Parts of the hotel look dated, but rooms are generally bright and contemporary, and the restaurants here are a highlight -- just note that there is no pool.

VIVE Hotel Waikiki

VIVE Hotel Waikiki Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 125-room VIVE Hotel Waikiki is a mid-range chain located a five-minute walk from Waikiki Beach. Guests rave about the friendly staff at this modern hotel with its large, open lobby -- home to a daily breakfast buffet with fruit, pastries, and coffee. Modern and minimal rooms (some with ocean views) start on the seventh floor; they have flat-screen TVs and updated bathrooms. There’s no pool or fitness center here. Guests may want to compare it to the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, which is similarly priced and has a small rooftop pool.
