Pros

Cons

  • Fee for valet parking and Wi-Fi (free in lobby and bar)
  • On the lower end of Sofitel brand
  • Not much to do for leisure travelers
  • Rooms are on the bland side

Bottom Line

Located on a serene lagoon, the 421-room Sofitel San Francisco Bay is a convenient choice for business travelers that want to be near the airport and freeway. Rooms are spacious and offer nice touches like flat-screen TVs and Keurig coffeemakers, but design-wise are on the bland side. On the other hand the lobby is airy and attractive with plenty of white marble and fresh flowers. Perks include a nice outdoor pool with peaceful views of the lagoon, along with a restaurant serving California-inspired French cuisine, called Bay 223. While the free shuttle to San Francisco International Airport is convenient, there are pesky fees for Wi-Fi and some leisure travelers might wish they were closer to the action of San Francisco, a 30-minute drive away.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Location

A business hot spot located a 30-minute drive from San Francisco on a peaceful lagoon

The Sofitel San Francisco Bay is not within walking distance (or some would say, easy driving distance) of local attractions, making it a more appealing option for business travelers than leisure travelers. Located in between San Mateo and Redwood City off Highway 101, the only things nearby are a few decent shopping centers and multiple restaurants in the corporate bay area, a 5-minute drive from the hotel.

The San Mateo/Redwood City area is part of the San Francisco Bay area and is located a 30-minute drive away from San Francisco. Similar to other areas in Silicon Valley, these cities aren't major tourist attractions, but rather offer close proximity to local corporate headquarters. The area doesn't have much to offer on its own, but Palo Alto, a redwood park, and San Francisco are all nearby. Palo Alto is home to Stanford University's beautiful campus, and is only a 20 minute drive away.

  • 18-minute drive to San Francisco International Airport
  • 30-minute drive to San Jose International Airport
  • 3-minute drive to Electronic Arts headquarters
  • 5-minute drive to Marlin Park, which has lots of open space for sports
  • 5-minute drive to Oracle headquarters
  • 10-minute drive to PDI/Dreamworks headquarters
  • 17-minute drive to Google, Inc headquarters
  • 23-minute drive to Yahoo! Headquarters
  • 23-minute drive to Stanford University
