Bottom Line

The Stanford Terrace Inn is conveniently located across the street from Stanford University’s southeast end. The Palo Alto hotel has 80 units, all somewhat sparsely furnished with traditional-style furnishings. Rooms are incredibly spacious, though, and even the standard rooms come with sitting areas, large work spaces, microwaves, and mini-fridges. There are even “green” rooms with sophisticated air-filtration systems and biodegradable lotions and soaps. Unfortunately, the floors and walls are too thin, and noise from neighboring rooms is an issue. Overall, this is a great pick for guests visiting the campus who want some extra amenities during their stay -- there's a nice outdoor pool area, a relaxing sundeck, coin-operated laundry, free continental breakfast, free shuttle within Stanford's campus, and a fitness center (though it's incredibly small).

Stanford Terrace Inn

Location

Located by the southeast end of Stanford University’s campus in Palo Alto

The Stanford Terrace Inn is located in Palo Alto, a quaint, yet affluent town at the northern tip of Silicon Valley. Its name, which means “tall stick” in Spanish, refers to a 110-foot tall native redwood tree that's more than 1,000 years old. Palo Alto’s claim to fame, of course, is Stanford University, one of the most prestigious and selective universities in the world. Founded in 1891 by Leland and Jane Stanford in honor of their teenage son who died of typhoid, Stanford has gone on to produce an astounding array of alumni, such as Olympic volleyball star Kerri Walsh, former U.S. president Herbert Hoover, journalist and TV personality Rachel Maddow, and the founders of Cisco Systems, Google, LinkedIn, and Yahoo.

Silicon Valley itself was originally named for its many silicon chip manufacturers, and was considered to be the center of the late ‘90s dot-com bubble. It has grown to become the home of some of the most innovative technological companies in the world, such as Apple, Google, and Adobe. Located in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley remains a hot spot for venture capitalists, too, making it the ideal place to be if you’re a digital startup.
