1

Kenwood Inn and Spa

Kenwood, California, United States

Kenwood Inn and Spa is located in Sonoma County, but the hotel and grounds evoke beautiful Tuscany. The European-style property impresses with its lush gardens and courtyards, and exquisite fountains and pools. The 29 private and spacious rooms are individually decorated with romantic Mediterranean-inspired decor, and are furnished with cozy fireplaces, quality Italian linens, oversize showers, and personal balconies (some with stunning vineyard views). Extensive freebies and an ultra-luxurious spa help ensure that guests feel pampered. The beautiful setting and views give it a slight edge over the Hotel Healdsburg.

2

Hotel Healdsburg

Healdsburg, California, United States

This 55-room boutique delivers luxurious rooms, a phenomenal restaurant by renowned chef Charlie Palmer, a peaceful pool, and ample free perks. Rooms are modern and comfortable, with hardwood floors, teak platform beds with Frette linens, and large bathrooms with big soaking tubs (except Standard Rooms). Plus, lovely grounds and a central location right on Healdsburg Plaza, home to tasting rooms, restaurants and shops.

3

Hotel Les Mars, Relais & Chateaux

Healdsburg, California, United States

This upscale Relais & Chateaux property feels like a European mansion, and exudes elegance on every level, from the rooms' high ceilings with exposed wooden beams, to the dark cherry wood furniture. With 16 rooms, it's small enough that guests receive the special attention (such as a fresh breakfast delivered to your door each morning) without being overwhelmed by staff. The rooms are equipped with fireplaces and free Wi-Fi, and feature European-style design that includes draped four-poster beds, Italian linens, and antique-style furniture. It's more intimate than the Hotel Healdsburg and some may prefer the decor style here, but that in itself isn't enough to give it the edge, especially when Hotel Healdsburg offers more features for a lower price (including a restaurant and spa, both of which Les Mars lacks.)

4

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

Sonoma, California, United States

Housed in a Spanish mission-style building, this upscale 228-room hotel attracts well-heeled guests with a top-notch spa complete with its own thermal mineral spring, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and an 18-hole championship golf course. Most rooms were completely renovated in April 2010 and feature classic decor and modern amenities, including iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and stocked minibars, but others could still use some updates.

5

H2 Hotel

Healdsburg, California, United States

This 36-room boutique hotel in the heart of Healdsburg is a good pick for eco-conscious folks looking for something convenient to wineries with a modern, hip, relaxed vibe. The rooms are all done in a minimalist style, using sustainable materials, and are equipped with all the high-tech amenities you could want. The property offers some pretty interesting freebies -- from free loaner bikes, to free weekend yoga classes in the Green Room -- along with a great restaurant serving modern Mediterranean fare made with fresh, local ingredients and seasonal cocktails, and a nice solar-heated outdoor pool surrounded by greenery.

6

Bungalows 313

Sonoma, California, United States

This quaint, small B&B in the heart of downtown Sonoma is made up of six homey and attractive bungalows. Each bungalow is different -- some have wood-burning fireplaces, others have Jacuzzi tubs, separate living areas, or full kitchens – but all units are luxurious and comfortable, with plush beds, warm decor, and a balcony or a patio. The property is lacking certain features, such as a pool and a gym, but the location is prime and the setting intimate and romantic.
