Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington

Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington is located on a residential street in the affluent neighborhood of Ostermalm. Constructed as a private residence in 1938, the six-story building, with Juliet balconies, became a hotel in 1967. The large, ground-floor shopfront windows are remnants of its past life as a bakery, and later, a shop that sold gloves. Other relics of its past include the old-fashioned elevator and narrow staircase. The hotel has added a separate wing, which is located in an apartment block around the corner. While modern -- with dropped ceilings, pendant lighting, and a pale-wood reception counter and matching shelving unit separating the spaces -- the hotel's public areas exude a homey coziness too. Colorful sofas, high-back black velour chairs, stuffed armchairs, and warm-colored Oriental rugs encourage guests to gather. The terrace, where guests can sip their coffee or drinks as they peruse the newspapers, is another spot to linger. This small hotel draws guests from across the spectrum -- couples, families, solo and business travelers and groups of friends -- but is best suited to those seeking a quiet setting, a respite from the bustle of the central city. 

Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington is located in the neighborhood of Ostermalm, about a 15-minute subway ride to central Stockholm. Ostermalmstorg T-Bana subway station is an eight-minute walk from the hotel, and Stockholm's central station is one stop away. Ostermalm is largely residential, but it's a nine-minute walk to Stureplan, a vibrant area of shops, restaurants, theaters, and night clubs. The Strandvagen waterfront area is about an eight-minute walk away. Most tourist sights are easily reachable by public transportation.

The 60 brightly decorated rooms at the Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington have large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Floors are pinewood, and walls are crisp white with soft gray or powder-blue accent walls. Each room has a different complementary color palette, such as pale blue and gray, or violet and yellow. Much of the pale-wood, streamlined furniture is built in. Fresh flowers placed in each room are a nice touch.

Some of the Singles, which measure 129 square feet, and Moderate Rooms, are cramped, and at 161 square feet, some Doubles are only slightly larger. Standard Rooms, Superior Rooms, and Suites are the most spacious.

In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs with DVD players, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers. Many rooms also have their own balconies or terraces, and other extras include safes, trouser presses, and irons and ironing boards. There are no mini-fridges or minibars in the Standard and Moderate Rooms, and rooms lack air-conditioning. Suites have separate living rooms with sofa beds, and come with minibars and Nespresso machines.

Bathrooms are on the small side, and most are fitted with shower stalls -- which can be a tight squeeze for some -- while a few have shower/tub combos. Hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries are provided. 

Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington is big on the small touches. Both a breakfast and dinner buffet are included in the room rate. The breakfast has a nice selection of fresh fruit and berries, several types of bread, cheese, yogurt, cereals (including the hotel's own toasted muesli), croissants, as well as hot dishes like bacon and eggs, and pancakes. The dinner buffet varies each evening.

The lobby bar serves drinks and snacks, and stays open late. There's also a coffee machine offering different types of coffee around the clock, free of charge. The outdoor terrace on the second floor is a pleasant place for guests to relax with a drink or book. The hotel also has a sauna, which can be reserved in advance, and is free of charge. While there's no fitness center on site, the hotel offers discounts to a nearby fitness center and a yoga studio and can book classes. A computer and printer are available for guests' use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
