Bottom Line

The Connect Hotel City is a budget property situated in a residential area of Stockholm a seven-minute walk from the metro. The 110-room property holds 35 windowless economy rooms with shared bathrooms; small windowless "cabins" with private bathrooms; and single, triple, and upgraded superior rooms (these do have windows but no views to speak of). Jewel-toned textiles brightens these spaces, which are outfitted with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but they lack kettles or mini-fridges. Features are mostly limited to a reception desk that doubles as a bar and a dining area where a free continental breakfast is served, along with light meals for lunch and dinner. Those hunting for budget rates may prefer the nearby Stockholm Hostel; decor here is barebones, but the even-lower price tag is enticing.

Connect Hotel City

Scene

Modern budget hotel with bright pops of color

For guests on the market for a hostel, the Connect Hotel City offers a stylish step-up. The brick building turned into a hotel in 2007 and lobby decor still feels fresh and modern with wood floors, chesterfield sofas, and bright green chairs gathered around coffee tables or on top of animal-hide-like carpets. Public spaces are multipurpose: The lounge merges directly into the reception area -- the desk doubles as a bar -- and the breakfast room acts as a dining area for light meals, available in the afternoon and evening. The vast range of rooms, from windowless economy rooms with shared bathrooms to larger rooms with pull-out sofas draws a mix of budget-minded travelers from solo backpackers to families or small groups of friends.

Location

In a residential area, a seven-minute walk to the metro

Connect Hotel City is located on a quiet city street in the Kungsholmen District in central Stockholm. While the area is mostly residential, several restaurants and shops are in walking distance, and the heart of the city is accessible via the Fridhemsplan metro station, a seven-minute walk from the hotel. The historic Old Town, Gamla Stan, takes about 22 minutes to reach, including the walk from the hotel to the metro. Public transport can also take guests to Stockholm's Central Station in 14 minutes and Stockholm Arlanda Airport in 50 minutes.

Rooms

Modern rooms with wood floors and bright accents, but economy rooms are basic

Rooms may be simple and compact, but they also feel clean and modern, pairing nice oak wood floors with fresh white walls. In most rooms, drapes, bed runners, and accent walls behind the beds add a pop of color in bright orange, blue, or purple. Of the hotel's 110 rooms, there are 35 tiny, windowless Quick Sleep Rooms, which have shared bathroom facilities and small TVs, but no other amenities. Upgraded Cabin Rooms aren't much larger and are also windowless, with wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, folding chairs for seating, and hangers on the wall in lieu of wardrobes. Their private bathrooms are compact but contemporary and fully tiled, with comfortably sized shower stalls, plus hairdryers and toiletry dispensers.

Larger double and triple rooms are available, and might include desks, wall-art behind the beds, rainbow tiling in the bathrooms, coffee/tea service, or even pull-out sofas, but no mini-fridges. Wi-fi is free throughout. Rooms are also available for long stays, with cheaper weekly and monthly pricing packages available.

Features

Free breakfast, light meals available, plus small sauna

As expected for a budget spot, features at Connect Hotel City are limited, with several doing double duty. The trendy lobby (dubbed the "living room") has lots of lounge spaces, brochures, and a reception desk that doubles as a fairly well-stocked bar. The lobby leads into the canteen-style dining area, host to the free continental breakfast, which offers up a nice range of cold fare, like cereal, bread, yogurt, and hardboiled eggs. The hotel also serves a light lunch and dinner menu here, and guests find the prices reasonable.

While there's no gym, the hotel does have a small, well-kept sauna. There's also a trendy wood-floored conference room, a computer and printer in the lobby for guest use, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Pets are allowed for a nightly fee and on-site parking is available, but also costs extra . The front desk is open 24 hours.
