Bottom Line

The Place is a perfect getaway for those looking for a tranquil escape. Hidden in the hills of Koh Tao, it only has nine private villas, each completely separate and surrounded by trees, looking out to the sea. Elegant, rustic-luxe rooms all feature elegant wood floors, kitchen facilities, and large plunge pools on the decks. Once checked in, the staff basically leave guests alone, but provide mobile phones they can use for food delivery and taxi pick-ups. The resort doesn't have any facilities so to speak of, not even a restaurant, but most guests come here for privacy and romance, and are content to spend most of their time lounging on the deck.

The Place Luxury Boutique Villas

Scene

A quiet escapist fantasy where couples don't even need to leave their rooms

The Place is a real escapist's fantasy and clearly aimed at romantic couples looking for the ultimate secluded spot on Koh Tao. There are no facilities whatsoever to speak of at this resort hidden in the hills -- not even a restaurant or bar. But guests don't even have to leave their rooms as the courtesy mobile phones provided are programmed with phone numbers for several restaurants in town that will deliver directly to the villa door. The staff can also be called to help with any specific requests; guests often rave of the exceptional service. The nine villas here are well separated from each other, and there is a high chance guests won't see each other at all, which is part of the appeal. With a kitchenette and picnic basket full of food in each villa, and an infinity-edge plunge pool with a view on the deck, there really isn't much reason to go out.

Location

Set in the hills behind Sairee Beach up a dead-end road, and a very steep walk home

The Place is hidden in the hills of Sairee Beach, less than a 10-minute drive from town, but seemingly miles away, as the villas are hidden up a dead-end, half-dirt road. For restaurants and shops, one needs to walk back down the hill, and it is a very steep climb back up, although the resort does provide an in-house taxi driver for guests' disposal, although prices aren't cheap.

Rooms

Luxurious villas with elegant wood floors, kitchenettes, and infinity-edge plunge pools, plus media boxes with 5,000 movies

All the villas here are refined and elegant, featuring spacious living quarters with floor-length sliding doors to allow guests to open the villa front in entirety. Plenty of dark polished wood is on display here, although this, combined with soft lighting, makes the rooms appear quite dim -- though this may not be the worst thing for romantic-minded couples. Bathrooms are huge, with double washbasins and glass-roof showers, and all villas come with kitchenettes and stocked picnic baskets, which are most welcome as there is no restaurant on premises. There is free Wi-Fi, and Nespresso machines with capsules are available for an extra charge. There is no cable access, but there is a media box with over 5,000 movies in each room for play on the 32-inch LCD TVs.

The Place has pampering villas, but no out of room facilities to speak of. There is no spa, gym, or even restaurant.
