Bottom Line

This mid-range resort in Tre Fontane, Sicily, is geared toward (mostly Italian) families and couples looking to enjoy the pool and beach. The long, sandy red- and white-sand beach is under a 10-minute walk away, and there are two pools (one for the kiddies) on the premises. The expansive property has pretty North African design and plenty of spots to relax. Rooms are a bit basic, with tile floors and unexceptional bedding, but they're big and clean; most have balconies. The location is within a half-hour drive of the Selinunte Archaeological Area, as well as several southwestern Sicilian towns, including Castelvetrano.

Zahira Resort & Village

Scene

A mid-range, family-friendly resort with nice pools and a private section on the beach

As you approach this resort, the first thing you'll likely notice is that it's big. And white. The building is also low, lending the appearance of a compound. Once inside, though, the interiors and the grounds are attractive, decorated and landscaped in the style of Northern Africa (not surprising, considering southwestern Sicily is so close to Tunisia). Tile is everywhere, which lends a clean, cool feel.

The common areas, especially outside, are expansive. There abundance of open space can make the property feel airy and open or a bit empty, depending on the current number of guests and your perspective. The many lounging areas include terraces, patios, and courtyards with fountains. In peak season, though, the animation team helps create a more lively environment. The property draws mostly families, thanks in part to its kids club' and a kids' pool, so couples should expect to see at least a few little ones enjoying the property.

The suites offer a double sink in the bathroom, as well as a comfortably furnished sitting area/living room separated from the bedroom by heavy drapes. Features

Two pools, a private section of beach, and dolphin-watching excursions

This resort has a solid array of amenities. The buffet restaurant, where the substantial free hot and cold continental breakfast is served, is plain and looks a bit like a cafeteria. The quality a la carte Mediterranean restaurant with terrace seating is only open seasonally. There are four sleek bars, including one poolside and one on the hotel's private section of beach.

The beach is the clear highlight -- the long, sandy stretch in Tre Fontane is beautiful, and the resort has a private section with a beach bar, chairs, and free towels. It's a short walk away, but the hotel also offers a free shuttle. The resort also can arrange dolphin-watching excursions so guests can get close to the dolphins that frequently swim right off-shore. Water sports such as canoeing and windsurfing can be enjoyed here. An animation team organizes activities on the sand during high season.

The big pool is surrounded by palm trees, and there is an abundance of lounge chairs of either white plastic or orange fabric. A dedicated children's pool is nearby, though it isn't much different from the adult pool, other than being a bit smaller. A playground is near the children's pool, and it's on sand, so there is less chance of injury. In season, nightly entertainment and shows are offered in an outdoor amphitheater with bleacher-style seating.
