Bottom Line

This picturesque Edwardian manor is a fantastic budget option for tourists who want to explore Vancouver but prefer a quiet neighborhood and a quick ride on public transportation -- rather than a centrally located hotel. It’s not particularly well-equipped for children or business travelers, but the homey rooms and small shared dining and living spaces are lovely and cost-effective for single guests or couples who enjoy the intimacy of bed & breakfasts. Douglas Guest House

Scene

A cozy, casual, and modern manor with international guests

Bright red and vibrant, the Douglas is among the most eye-catching Edwardian-style heritage home on its tree-lined residential street. The garden is lush and filled with trees and flowers, and the front porch is inviting with several white and beige wicker chairs. The "lobby" resembles a grandmother’s cluttered living room, with non-matching rugs and upholstery, faux flowers, and generic wall art. However, colors and furnishings in other rooms are considerably more modern and harmonious, and the dining area in the sunroom -- with access to the patio overlooking the garden -- is bright and pleasant. Guests tend to be international, including South American and European travelers, plus some middle-age tourists.

Location

Convenient residential area full of young families

The hotel is tucked into a tree-lined residential street in one of Vancouver’s oldest heritage neighborhoods. It's within 15 minutes of cultural attractions and the waterfront, and three blocks – about five minutes – from a SkyTrain station, which reaches downtown in five minutes. The train trip to Vancouver International Airport is 15 minutes. Broadway is also nearby, making travel from the West to the East side of the city very easy. The neighborhood is safe and peaceful, with City Hall and Vancouver General Hospital a few minutes away. Cambie Street, a block over, is very busy and full of shops and great restaurants.

Rooms

Lots of light and color but a little small

The five guest rooms are bright, colorful, and warm with plenty of closet space. All rooms have a seating area, flat-screen TV, thick duvets, and plenty of pillows on the beds. Interesting patterns and pops of bright color keep the overall look interesting. The rooms with more than one bed are a little tight, space-wise, and a couple of rooms share a bathroom down the hall. The Suite includes a kitchenette with a microwave, small refrigerator, and coffeemaker. Everything is kept spotless and neat by multilingual staff. The rooms can be noisy in the morning when everyone is walking around for breakfast. Doors can be thin. Some rooms overlook a tree-lined street.
