Bottom Line

This historic property has seen some pretty famous folks pass through its doors in the past -- Presidents Roosevelt, Coolidge, Wilson, and Eisenhower, as well as several famous artists, all visited this lovely B & B. The property still has a relaxing vibe -- the 16 unique rooms are decorated in an old-world style, the quiet library is an inviting place to relax, and the manicured grounds and surrounding serene woods help create a peaceful atmosphere. Those who feel they need to be connected to the rest of the world might want to look elsewhere (there’s no Internet and no TV at the inn), but this is a wonderful pick for a romantic getaway.

Juniper Hill Inn

Location

On a pretty hill overlooking Ascutney Mountain and Lake Runnemede

The Juniper Hill Inn is located just a few minutes north of Windsor, a town right on the border with New Hampshire known for being the birthplace of Vermont. You have to follow a narrow, winding road through thick forests to get there, but the end of the trip is pretty rewarding: The property boasts great views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Runnemede. There’s not much within walking distance, but an easy drive will get you to Windsor’s charming downtown area, the trails in Windsor Town Forest, and the Historic Homes of Runnemede.

First settled in 1764, Windsor quickly became an important trade and agricultural center, and by 1820 it was the state’s second largest town. Nowadays, Windsor is a lovely village with little more than a Main Street lined with pretty homes, a few businesses, a couple of churches and an art gallery. But it is surrounded by wonderful forests, and is a great base to explore the Ascutney Mountain.

  • 1-hour-40-minute drive to Burlington International Airport
  • 3-minute drive to downtown Windsor
  • 3-minute drive to historic Old Constitution House, birthplace of the State of Vermont
  • 4-minute drive to the Historic Homes of Runnemede
  • 4-minute drive to Cornish Colony Museum
  • 4-minute drive to Windsor – Mt. Ascutney Amtrak station
  • 5-minute drive to Lake Runnemede
  • 5-minute drive to American Precision Museum
  • 10-minute drive to Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site
  • 15-minute drive to Ascutney Mountain Resort
