Best Value Hotels in 6th Arrondissement, Paris

The mid-range Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche is located off the Boulevard St. Michel, near the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain-des-Pres, about two blocks from the Jardin du Luxembourg. The 110 rooms come with flat-screen TVs, laptop-size safes, and tea kettles with free coffee and tea. Rooms have dated furnishings, though some units also have lovely balconies. Connecting rooms for families or groups are available. The front desk serves wine, and there's a Nespresso machine in the lobby. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

The 28-room Hotel Le Clement is comfortably old shoe, offering a cozy refuge at reasonable rates in one of Paris' most coveted and expensive neighborhoods. (It's about a two-minute walk to the Saint-Germain covered food market, a one-minute walk to the Mabillon metro stop, and a four-minute walk the the Eglise St. Sulpice.) The hotel is classic and homey rather than sleek and chic, with a nice wood-paneled lounge and an elevator -- not a given in small Paris hotels. The traditionally styled rooms are on the small side, and include flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. Unlike Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche, there is no coffee- or tea-making facilities. 

Hotel Dauphine Saint Germain makes a charming first impression, with pots of flowering ivy on every window sill of the 17th-century building. The small lobby has oak-paneling and plush chairs, giving an appealing, very French look. The 30 rooms are individually decorated in homey, classic French decor -- expect antique sconces and matching toile or floral wallpaper and drapery. Space is limited (as is standard for Parisian hotels), but bathrooms are sizable, and affordable rates include free Wi-Fi. This boutique property lacks a gym, business center, and full restaurant (though a bar and breakfast service are on hand) but the clientele of mostly middle-age couples don't mind these drawbacks over Dauphine's reasonable rates and excellent sightseeing location.

The 134-room Holiday Inn Paris-St. Germain Des Pres is a contemporary hotel right by a metro station and within a 10-minute walk of the Montparnasse Tower and Luxembourg Gardens. Modern and clean rooms feature upscale bathrooms, minibars, and coffeemakers -- but they're small and have rather dark decor. Also, some guests complain about the glass bathroom doors that could pose privacy issues. As opposed to the other hotels on this list, this Holiday Inn has a full-service restaurant that serves all meals, including breakfast (for a fee). Other perks include meeting space, parking, and free Wi-Fi. 

Hotel Edouard 6 is a solid Left Bank value. The 33-room property offers pleasant accommodations, proximity to several Metro lines, and decor with a well-executed medieval twist. Standard rooms have basic, traditional furnishings with details to give design oomph, like framed black and white photos, rich fabrics for bed accents and drapes, and French windows that open out to balconies or balconets. They lack creature comforts, such as coffee and tea provisions and generously stocked minibars, and nicked dressers, scuff marks on walls, and stained bathroom grout could use spiffing up. Some higher-end rooms have been transformed into modern, attractive units with posh bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi throughout and the buffet breakfast (fee) are perks, but there's no full-restaurant, bar, or business facilities. For those, stick to Holiday Inn Paris-St. Germain Des Pres, and note that rates there are a smidge higher. 

Situated in a six-story residential-style building between Gare Montparnasse and Jardin du Luxembourg, the 54-room Villa des Artistes is a stylish pick, with only a small Best Western sign indicating its part in a huge international chain. According to the hotel, famous artists like playwright Samuel Beckett and painter Amedeo Modigliani once stayed here, a claim that is reflected in the Cubist and Surrealist prints throughout the hallways. From the red-and-black checkerboard floor to the tree-lined garden terrace and cozy bar, the hotel more closely resembles a designer boutique property. Modern, neutral rooms include comforts like en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, electric kettles, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The morning buffet breakfast crowd sits both indoors and outdoors on nice days, and the hotel's clientele is mostly comprised of guests looking for mid-range values -- business travelers, tourists, and families alike. However, Wi-Fi is slow and unreliable in some rooms and there is no parking available (Holiday Inn offers private, off-street parking).

The 17-room Atelier Saint-Germain occupies a classic cream-colored stone building -- with wrought-iron balconies and top dormer windows -- that blends in seamlessly with the neighborhood. The hotel is on the southern edge of the 6th Arrondissement, so while it is slightly outside the tourist area, it's still near a plethora of shops and eateries. It's a one-minute walk to Vavin Metro station and a five-minute walk from Luxembourg Gardens. Though the guest rooms are tiny and show some signs of wear and tear, they come with free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and a bit of style: black-and-white photos of ballerinas at Parisian landmarks. The only hotel features here are a breakfast buffet (fee), 24-hour reception desk, and an elevator -- a nice perk at a Paris hotel. Rates here are generally a bit higher than those at Villa des Artistes. 

The 42-room Louison Hotel was built in 1856, and its facade has a stately and austere appearance. The inside, however, mixes historical appeal (crown moldings, statuesque busts, lantern pendant lighting) with modern comforts and conveniences (flat-screen TVs, contemporary decor, free Wi-Fi). Although rooms are on the small side (fairly standard in Paris), they feel larger thanks to big windows and mirrored closet doors. The bathrooms are narrow, however, and some rooms feature twin beds pushed close together. A quaint dining area features a daily breakfast menu (at cost), and the location in the chic, artsy Saint-Germain des Pres area near several metro stations makes this a great hub from which to explore the city.

On a street filled with numerous historic residential buildings, Sevres Saint Germain Hotel holds its own. The 17th-century facade has a row of hanging glass streetlights and wrought-iron window guards draped with plants and flowers. Inside, the lobby is dominated by the rough-hewn, exposed wooden ceiling beams that date back centuries. The 30 rooms display similar vintage woodwork that mixes with traditional and contemporary furniture. Rooms are compact, but they include flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, free newspapers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have modern fittings and shower/tub combos, but the marble tile could use a refresh. Like Louison, Sevres' rooms are small and breakfast comes at a fee, but the rates here are just a hair higher than those at Louison.

Built in 1991, the 52-room Villa Luxembourg is a more modern interpretation of the classic Parisian architecture that surrounds it. Though it has a cream-colored facade and Juliet balconies, its giant span of bow windows looks decidedly modern. Inside, decor is somewhat dated and uninspired with neutral colors and brown wood-wall accents. Apartment-style rooms, however, are fairly spacious for a Paris hotel in this price range. And they include air-conditioning, kitchenettes, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has an on-site meeting room, and a breakfast buffet for a fee, but few other property features. Louison and Sevres are both more charming, but also pricier. 

A trip to Hotel des Marrionniers is like a tumble down the rabbit hole in "Alice in Wonderland." Getting to the entrance requires a walk through a corridor down a nearly 100-foot pathway. Inside, the lobby walls are covered in broad red-and-gold stripes and a chandelier with teardrop-shaped crystals hangs from the ceiling. Out back is a garden terrace with wicker and wrought-iron chairs -- the perfect place to decompress. The 37 rooms at Hotel des Marrionniers are, like many in Paris, small. Some guests find them charming and cozy, while others complain about the small amount of storage and cramped living space. Velvet and linen-covered chairs, flowery curtains, and scarlet-and-lemon accent walls add a little Parisian zest, and all rooms come with safes, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and French designer toiletries. Hotel des Marrionniers's location on stylish Rue Jacob is within walking distance of the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, and the Jardin des Tuileries. This mid-range boutique property has far more charms and quirks than Villa Luxembourg, but also higher rates.
