Bottom Line

This Jurys Inn is a mid-range, business-oriented chain hotel occupying a smart, modern building in the center of Aberdeen. Although the immediate surroundings aren't particularly attractive, its location is convenient for arriving by bus or train, and the hotel is a short walk to the city's main shopping and dining areas. The 203 rooms are clean and bright, with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles for coffee and tea. Executive Rooms add Sky TV and minibars with free bottled water, though guests have complained about poor soundproofing throughout. For a chain hotel with a little more character at a similar price point, guests might want to check out Thistle's The Caledonian, about a 10-minute walk north.

Jurys Inn Aberdeen

Scene

Modern business-oriented chain hotel with jazzed-up vibe

Although occupying an impressively modern example of glass and stone architecture, the entrance to the Jurys Inn Aberdeen is gloomy and unappealing. The ambience perks up a bit at check-in, with a row of four reception desks decked out in wood paneling and topped with interactive tablets. Opened in 2009, the hotel maintains a contemporary vibe throughout, even if the decor is a tad minimalist and reminiscent of an airport lounge in some places. Splashes of color and a few funky furnishings help to detract from the chain-hotel look, while otherwise stark hallways are jazzed up with patterned carpets. Numerous guests hunched over laptops in the lobby attest to the business-oriented nature of this hotel, though it's also popular with weekending couples and the occasional family.

Location

Central, but unattractive, location next to main transport stations and shopping complex

The hotel is situated in front of Aberdeen's main train and bus stations, and is next to the Union Square shopping mall. While the location is super-central, the immediate area isn't particularly attractive and has lots of traffic. The more pleasant part of the city center, with its numerous bars, restaurants, and shops, is about five minutes away on foot. The neighboring retail complex means there's plenty of shopping opportunities on the hotel's doorstep, while the harbor and ferry terminals are a block away. The city's airport takes about 20 minutes to reach by car or taxi depending on traffic.

Rooms

Smart chain-hotel styling with free Wi-Fi and quality bath products

The hotel has 203 rooms, all of which are air-conditioned and have a smart chain-hotel style, with modern light wood veneer furnishings, dark red carpets, gray accent walls, and pictures of Scotland on the walls. Good beds have white linens and striped bed runners, and the hotel offers a choice of pillows -- a nice touch for a mid-range property. Standard Rooms include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea/coffeemakers, while Executive Rooms add Sky TV (movies and sports), daily newspapers, and minibars with free bottled water. Bathrooms are small but clean and modern, with bathtub/shower combos or step-in showers, and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. The Wi-Fi signal can be patchy on higher floors, and there have been reports of inadequate soundproofing between rooms.

Features

Excellent buffet breakfast and Costa Coffee lounge bar

A particularly good buffet breakfast of eggs, bacon, and sausages -- as well a choice of fresh fruits and freshly squeezed juices -- is included only in certain room packages and is served in the hotel's spacious restaurant, a window-lined space overlooking busy Union Square. The restaurant is also open for dinner, while the all-day Costa Coffee bar and lounge is available lunch, light meals, and drinks. Wi-Fi is free in public areas of the hotel as well, and while there are four meeting rooms and an event staff to help with conferences, there is no on-site parking, fitness or spa facilities.
