Bottom Line

Aviator Hotel Anchorage is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel in downtown Anchorage. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been well-maintained. Sure, the new owners are trying to make updates, but they took over in 2012 and the pool and helipad still aren’t completed. A walkable downtown location, low rates, and a cafe with live music during the week are the saving graces for the property. It’s the 250 rooms that need the most love as guests have reported odors and cleanliness issues. Microwaves and mini-fridges are a welcome touch, and many guests choose the extended-stay option. The nearby Clarion Suites Downtown might be more ideal for some, as it has a pool, gym, and contemporary guest rooms.

Aviator Hotel Anchorage

Scene

Budget hotel with dated interiors and a lively cafe with live music

There's nothing particularly striking about the Aviator Hotel Anchorage from the outside, except for the wooden lodge-like porte cochere that provides coverage for cars pulling up to the hotel to check-in. Even though the new management took over in 2012, they’ve been slow on updates, which means the interiors are pretty dated. The checkered floors of the lobby could be a fun aspect if the wooden desk and armchairs and couches weren’t outdated and showing some wear. The main public space is the Anchorage City Limits Music Cafe, which draws locals and guests for its weekly live shows and open mic nights. That’s not to say that it features an updated space. Though the guitars on the walls and the stage create an upbeat vibe, the black chairs and tables show visible wear and tear. Take note that even though there’s an elevator, guests must take a few stairs to get to the hallways, which isn’t ideal for travelers with mobility issues. The hotel receives a mix of travelers, some of which are booked just for the night during a cruise or flight layover.

Location

In the heart of downtown, a 10-minute walk or less to the mall and Anchorage Museum

Probably the hotel’s biggest draw is its location in downtown Anchorage. It’s just a three-minute walk to Buttress Park and a six-minute walk to the Anchorage Museum. The Anchorage Fifth Avenue Mall is a three-minute walk from the hotel. There are plenty of dining options on surrounding streets and a bus stop around the corner for those who prefer to use it. The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport takes about 20 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Dated chain-like rooms with mini-fridges, microwaves, and reported smells

Aviator Hotel Anchorage offers dated rooms with chain-like decor. The brown or green carpets are clearly dated, as are the blond-wood furnishings and stucco ceilings. Small floral art pieces and white bedding create an overall generic effect. All units come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Some have wet bars with sinks. The bathrooms include shower/tub combos, toiletries, and wall-mounted hairdryers. Past guests have complained of odors and stained carpet. Those staying in Anchorage for a while might consider staying at the hotel’s lofts which includes utilities, parking, and laundry on-site.

Features

Cafe with a paid breakfast, weekly live music, and six meeting rooms

Prior to the new management takeover, the hotel’s amenities were not kept in good repair, so the hotel is currently undergoing renovations on the rooftop helipad, the swimming pool, and a game room. These features are expected to open in 2018. As of now, the main highlight of the hotel is the cafe which offers a hot and cold breakfast in the mornings (for a fee) and dinner in the evenings. There’s a small mini-mart in the lobby. It also features live music throughout the week, plus karaoke and open-mic nights. Business travelers can take advantage of six fully-equipped meeting rooms and free Wi-Fi. Parking on-site is free.
