Bottom Line

The Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort is a smart and modern luxury resort surrounded by championship-level golf courses on the outskirts of Vilamoura. While there's little within walking distance, the stunning red cliff beach of Praia da Falesia is a 10-minute drive away. Rooms and suites are attractive, with impressive amenities that include Nespresso coffeemakers and luxurious bathrooms, plus balcony daybeds. Decent dining, three bars, and range of pools makes for a self-contained stay, though one that can lack atmosphere outside of peak season. Shuttles to golf courses and Vilamoura's marina are included. For something closer to town and the beach, with a similarly sharp style, check out the Crowne Plaza Vilamoura, which has similar rates.

Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort

Scene

Luxury golf resort with smart contemporary vibe and sprawling layout

With its perfect clean-lined symmetry and long palm-lined fountain, its clear upon arrival at the Anantara Vilamoura that this is a hotel with more than a little class. Stepping inside, its bright, airy, and equally sharp lobby creates a mood of understated luxury; a wizened tree "planted" in the polished marble floor breaks up this otherwise sparse reception area. Opened in 2009, this was originally part of the Tivoli chain, and its spotless corridors, smart lounges, and wood-deck terraces have been kept been finely maintained. The property is set on almost 10 acres of grounds, and the building itself can feel sprawling, with multiple wings and long walks between them that some find tiresome. The vibe is modern and laid-back -- which can lack a little in atmosphere off season. In summer, though, more families with kids join the golf vacationers and high-end tourists to create a little more buzz.

Location

Surrounded by Algarve golf courses, a 10-minute drive from the beach

The hotel is located just outside of Vilamoura (which is about a five-minute drive away) and overlooks the Oceanico Golf Course -- one of the best golf courses in the Algarve. Although there's little within walking distance, and the location can feel a little isolated for some, it is set in the heartland of the area's golf offerings with two other championship-level courses a short drive away (free transfers are provided). It's also 10 minutes' drive to the dramatic red cliff and golden sands of Praia da Falesia. Those wanting to hit up the party in Albufeira's old town are only a 25-minute drive from there as well. Expect a 30-minute drive to Faro Airport, and a two-hour-and-15-minute drive to Lisbon.

Rooms

Fresh, contemporary rooms with lots of space, plus luxe bathrooms and impressive amenities

The hotel has 280 rooms, ranging from humble doubles to a Presidential Suite, though the style is fresh across the board. Decor in all is smart, yet cozy, mixing slabs of white marble flooring with American oak wall panels, and wallpaper produced from natural fibers. Even the most modest room open to balconies with daybeds overlooking a pool, the gardens, or golf course; top-level suites have terraces with panoramic landscape views. Amenities are impressive, and include the expected flat-screen TVs (with movies on demand), well-stocked minibars, and electronic safes, plus Nespresso coffee makers, older iPod docks, and pillow menus. Wi-Fi is free. Executive Suites add home theater systems as well as separate living rooms and chic dining areas. Bathrooms are all spacious and sleek, with walk-in showers (rainfall and handheld heads), separate tubs, spacious wooden vanities, makeup mirrors, hairdryers, and quality chain-brand toiletries; suites also have mirrors with built-in TVs.

Features

Excellent breakfast included, plus four pools, easy golf access, and plenty for kids

As you'd expect from a large, high-end resort hotel, there's no shortage of features. Dining options are provided by two restaurants -- Emo and Sensorial -- the first offering top-floor panoramic views and a fine-dining vibe, the latter offers more straightforward breakfast and dinner buffets. Breakfast is an excellent spread, with plenty of variety including chilled sparkling wine, and eggs and pancakes cooked to order (all included in the rate). While food quality is generally good, some complain of slow service. There are also three bars, including a poolside bar and POP Bar with live DJs and a buzzy party vibe over busier months. Leisure and relaxation facilities also impress, with four pools that include the two main pools lined with loungers and day beds (one adult-only), a separate splash pool for infants, and a striking heated indoor pool finished in dark slate and mosaic with floor-to-ceiling views over the grounds. The Banyan Tree Spa also provides massage treatments and a sauna -- it's a stylish place to unwind, for sure. Children are also well catered for with an indoor playroom (monitored during most holiday periods) and a kids' club for children up to 10 years old. Shuttles to local golf courses are free, and the Oceanico Golf Course is right next door. Another shuttle runs to Vilamoura's marina. Parking is free, and Wi-Fi is free.
