Bottom Line

Decidedly cool and relaxed, the AquaLuz Suite Hotel is an impressive three-and-a-half-pearl property that provides a mostly modern alternative to many of the area’s more old-school options. The 177-unit facility features studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, as well as standard rooms. All are air-conditioned and include flat-screen TVs, and most have kitchenettes and furnished balconies that overlook either the pool or the city center. Keep in mind that some are dated. Amenities include an airy bar, a restaurant, multiple pools, a fitness center, and a full service spa. The biggest guest complaint is the weak Wi-Fi connection. The property is a 10-minute walk to the beach and 15 minutes to the old town center. Travelers seeking a more value-driven experience right on the beach can check out the Carvi Hotel.

AquaLuz Suite Hotel

Scene

Airy, relaxed property with modern touches and nicely landscaped grounds

The AquaLuz Suite Hotel is a mostly modern hotel that's a nice departure from some of the woefully dated properties in the area. The exterior features a palette of crisp whites and cool blues -- fitting given its proximity to the beach. That airy theme continues inside the lobby, which is a bright, contemporary space with plenty of natural light, comfortable seating, and pops of aquamarine. The atmosphere is simple and relaxed, which is right in line with the overall spirit here. Leafy palm trees shadow the interior courtyard, while deep green lawns and colorful flowers add some character to the otherwise simple grounds. Forgoing glitz and glamour, the hotel has an effortlessly breezy quality that should resonate well with beachgoers, families, and couples seeking a low-key getaway.

Location

A short drive from Lagos Marina and a 10-minute walk from the beach

The AquaLuz Suite Hotel is ideally situated just beyond the city walls of Lagos. Its location is especially appealing for those seeking a hub from which to explore the area. Pinhao Beach is about 10 minutes away by foot, while Dona Ana Beach, famous for its colorful cliffs, is a 15-minute walk. The charming city center, packed with little boutiques and cafes, is also a 10- to 15-minute stroll depending on your destination. Ponta da Piedade, whose rock formations are a standout feature along the Algarve coast, is only five minutes away by car. Lagos Regional Museum is about 15 minutes away by car and features a diverse selection of artwork, much of it dating from the 18th century. Faro Airport is just shy of an hour’s drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Mostly modern studios and apartments with kitchenettes and balconies -- though some are dated

Rooms here are a mixed bag, though all are air-conditioned. Most have a cozy, contemporary feel, though some aren't up to par. All units have hardwood floors and include flat-screen TVs, fully stocked kitchenettes, and balconies with either pool or city views. Wi-Fi isn't free, and can be poor. Standard rooms are spacious, at 40 square meters (431 square feet), but are clearly in need of an update. Furniture is worn in spots, and details like bedding and wall decor are aged. Yet other units throughout the building are quite chic and modern by comparison. Studio apartments measure 49 square meters (527 square feet) and have a serene appearance, thanks to their soft lighting, contemporary furnishings, and pops of seafoam green throughout.

One- and two-bedroom apartments are similarly chic, with honey-toned wood tables, beige sofas, and low-key artwork. The one-bedroom units are nicely laid out, though walking space in the bedroom is limited and the flat-screen TV on the corner desk is not ideally situated. Two-bedroom apartments are 82 square meters (883 square feet) and perfect for families seeking a home away from home. The kitchenette is fairly large, and the furnished balcony is especially spacious. Most units include functional, pristine bathrooms done in a palette of all white, and all feature shower/tub combos and toiletries.

Features

A spacious health club, multiple pools, and a regional restaurant with a bar

There are plenty of enjoyable amenities here, the most impressive of which is undoubtedly the on-site Solinca Health and Fitness Club. The fitness center is an upbeat space packed with workout equipment. With two indoor and two outdoor pools, it’s a swimmer’s paradise. Guests can also find respite in the club’s hot tub, sauna, or Turkish bath. There’s also a serene spa led by a team of beauty professionals.

Elsewhere, The Club restaurant serves regional fare and finds the perfect balance between casual and upscale. It’s nicely decorated, with modern pod seats and a flat-screen TV in the bar area. The main dining room has spotlights that cast a faint glow over the dark tables and hardwood floors. Poolside seating is also available, and room service is offered 24 hours a day. Parking is also available for a fee. Wi-Fi is offered for a surcharge, but many previous guests have reported that the connection is strongest in the lobby and barely usable in guest rooms.
