Bottom Line

The three-and-a-half-pearl Boavista Golf Resort is a golfer’s paradise, complete with an 18-hole championship course and an on-site golf academy. The property’s vast surroundings include water features and lakes, and there are several facilities, including a full-service spa and a large fitness center with tennis courts. The Clubhouse Restaurant serves global fare in a casual setting, and there’s also a bar. Modern apartments, townhouses, and villas are all air-conditioned and feature full kitchens, living rooms, and flat-screen TVs. The 66-unit resort also has a spacious indoor pool, and Wi-Fi and parking are both free. A car is essential, as it’s about a 10-minute drive from both the beach and Lagos. To be closer to the action, try the Hotel Marina Rio on the Lagos Marina, though features there are limited.

Boavista Golf Resort

Scene

Classic resort with a country club-like atmosphere and spacious green grounds

A casual, country club-like atmosphere pervades the 260-acre Boavista Golf Resort. One of the area’s more polished options, the hotel’s extensive golf theme is evident at first glance. It’s a classic resort in many ways. The entry is decidedly tropical, with abundant palm trees that sway over the buildings. Inside, a pro shop and framed golf artwork set the tone. Warm wood tones and shades of burgundy and forest green abound -- in fact, much of the property’s exterior is done in some variation of earthy honey or beige. The grounds are truly the highlight here, and it’s hard to ignore the expansive greens that envelop the entire resort. It’s ideal for avid golfers and couples, but there are plenty of nice touches that make it a reasonable choice for families, too.

Location

Slightly isolated, a 10-minute drive from the town center and the beach

Situated off the A22 motorway, the resort feels a bit isolated. Those who wish to be in proximity to Lagos' center may want to seek a different hotel, as it’s really best to have a car to get anywhere from this resort (the shuttle service is limited). Downtown Lagos is about 10 minutes away by car. Praia da Luz, the nearest beach, is around the same distance, as are the spectacular vistas and rock formations at Ponta da Piedade. One of the area’s most historic attractions is the 17th-century Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, which served as a protective fortress and now features Portuguese exhibitions and a serene chapel. Family-friendly attractions are also in the vicinity: Lagos Zoo is a 15-minute drive, and Slide & Splash water park is just about 25 minutes away. Faro Airport is about an hour’s drive from the resort, and it will take about two-and-a-half hours to reach Lisbon by car.

Rooms

Bright, modern apartments offer a home-away-from-home experience, with kitchens and balconies

Bright and roomy, the accommodations here include townhouses, apartments, duplexes, and villas. All share a modern look that’s evident in the soft pastel and warm beige palettes, and the simple, country-contemporary furnishings. Amenities add homey comforts: there are flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, washing machines, DVD players, and fully stocked kitchens. Bathrooms are especially well done, with glossy tiled walls, bright spotlights, and shower/tub combos, as well as ample countertop space or drawers.

The most basic unit is the 85-square-meter (915-square-foot), one-bedroom townhouse. Its living room, much like those in the other apartments, is a cozy space with soft leather couches and colorful artwork. The adjoining balcony offers a sunny view of the pool, and there’s also plenty of dining space adjacent to the kitchen. For larger groups, a two-bedroom townhouse, apartment, or duplex holds between four and six travelers, and some offer golf course views. The most spacious unit is the four-bedroom villa. Measuring 155 square meters (1668 square feet), it’s decidedly the more upmarket option with its fireplace, multiple pool-view balconies, and extra-large bathrooms. Some previous guests have complained about the walking distance between their apartments and the clubhouse -- in some cases, it's up to 15 minutes away.

Features

18-hole golf course, a casual restaurant, and a spacious fitness center with a spa

There’s not much lacking at the Boavista Golf Resort -- it has a list of impressive amenities that aren't common at many area hotels. The main highlight is its immaculate 18-hole golf course. Some guests might have trouble navigating its extensively hilly contours, but the landscape is impeccably manicured and offers pristine views of the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every vantage point. Nature is really a central theme out on the links -- half of the course is all green, while streams and lakes surround the remaining nine holes. There’s also a practice area and a golf academy for those who want to work on their games. Carts and other equipment are available for hire.

Adjacent to the 18th hole is the Clubhouse Restaurant, whose wide, floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor seats feature excellent views. It’s fairly casual, with flat-screen TVs, terra-cotta tiles, rattan chairs, and oak wood dining tables on one side and clothed tables and suede chairs on the other. There’s also a low-key bar area. The menu matches the ambience: standard fare includes pizza, burgers, and full English breakfasts.

Essential Fitness & Spa, the property’s on-site wellness center, is another main draw for those seeking some downtime. There’s a large fitness room packed with equipment, tennis courts, and a gaming area. The lounge area is equipped with plush leather seats and tea service, while massage and beauty treatment rooms are well lit and roomy. Essential also includes a heated indoor pool and a spacious terrace. There are several child-friendly amenities here, too, including a playground and an outdoor pool.

Parking is free, with most spaces situated directly outside the apartments. Wi-Fi is also free throughout the property. Guests should note that the property does “shut down” at night for the most part. The reception desk is closed, and late arrivals need to dial a special number to receive their room keys. WI-Fi is free throughout the hotel and parking is also free. While the hotel does offer a shuttle to Luz and Lagos, it's only seasonal and departure times are limited.
