Bottom Line

The Four Seasons Vilamoura (not part of the luxury Four Seasons brand) is an upper-middle-range time-share property located adjacent to a golf course, but a bit far from the beach and marina. Decor is a little dated throughout, but the 114 self-catering apartments are clean and spacious, with full kitchens, washer/dryers, and balconies. With several large outdoor and indoor pools, three restaurants serving good food, daily activities for all ages, and a spa, the property is a good year-round destination for families, couples, and golfers. Free parking is convenient for those exploring the area by car, but there are fees for in-room Wi-Fi and for use of the kids' club. The Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa has similar rates but is more stylish and upscale, and provides a shuttle to the beach.

Four Seasons Vilamoura

Scene

Sprawling family-friendly property with lovely grounds and a relaxing atmosphere

Although its name may evoke luxury and style, the Four Seasons Vilamoura is not part of the high-end Four Seasons hotel brand. Instead, this is a friendly upper-middle-range time-share property popular among groups of golfers and families for its well-equipped apartments and large pools. A large round driveway leads to the hotel’s main entrance, where a soothing cascading fountain and several manicured patches of grass with olive and palm trees immediately set the mood for a relaxing stay. An arched doorway on a cute exposed stone wall opens onto a small, simple reception area with tiled floors, a lantern-style lamp in the center, and a small front desk with mirrored surfaces. It is clean and tidy, and fresh flowers and plants make it a little cozier, but interiors are dated throughout, with old-fashioned upholstery in seating areas, and basic furniture in the restaurants and bars.

Outside, stone paths wind through inviting gardens with big lawns and stone decks where guests can be seen enjoying a drink from the bar or relaxing under large umbrellas. Apartments and common areas are housed in several cute salmon-and-white structures built around the hotel’s three large freeform pools, and the atmosphere is laid-back during the day. At night, the cocktail bar is the meeting point for golfers and couples, but the vibe at the Four Seasons Vilamoura is mostly quiet and relaxing. Travelers hoping to be closer to the beach might want to consider the Dom Pedro Golf Resort, which also offers shuttle service to local golf clubs -- but its rooms lack the kitchens found here.

Location

Quiet location near several golf courses

The Four Seasons Vilamoura is located in a quiet residential neighborhood directly adjacent to the 18-hole, par 72 Pinhal Golf Course. The area is home to several other renowned courses, including the Laguna, the Old Course, and the Millennium, all within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. The lively marina, home to plenty of restaurants, bars and shops, is a 25-minute walk away (it's five minutes farther to Vilamoura Beach), and there is a tourist train stop right outside the property for those who would rather not walk. Though the train runs regularly, it is slow and probably not much faster than walking. Cabs are inexpensive, though in peak season and during busy traffic times guests might face a bit of a wait for one to arrive. The town’s main beach is a five-minute drive away, and many other beautiful stretches of sand can be found within a 20- to 25-minute drive. It is a half-hour drive to Faro Airport; the hotel offers transfer services for a fee. There is also free indoor and outdoor parking on-site.

Additionally, all rooms have flat-screen TVs, washers/dryers, and sofa beds for an extra guest. Free wireless Internet access is available in the lobby, but in-room Wi-Fi is an extra charge.

Bathrooms are clean and spacious, with jetted shower/tub combos, plastic hampers, and a few basic toiletries. Three-Bedroom Apartments are two-bedroom units connected to a Studio, and Studios have a folding screen between the bedroom and the living area for privacy.

Four pools, kids’ club, three restaurants, a spa, entertainment, and free parking

The central part of the property is taken up almost entirely by hotel’s three large outdoor pools, one of which is heated and has a zero-entry access for kids. There are tons of loungers and umbrellas around the pools, and the poolside bar and outdoor lounge offer drinks and snacks during the warmer months. There is also a heated indoor pool and a whirlpool with large windows offering garden views. The adjacent spa features a small fitness center with cardio and strength-training machines, a sauna, treatment rooms (including an outdoor one by the pool), and salon services. A varied entertainment program with options for all ages (including cooking, languages and dancing) is available daily free of charge, but there is a fee for use of the kids’ club.
