Bottom Line

The 158-suite Hotel Da Rocha is an upper-middle-range option across the street from the wide, beautiful shores of Praia da Rocha, in Portimao's hotel zone. In addition to the beach, many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops are within easy walking distance. All rooms have a simple contemporary look, with kitchenettes, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. Breakfast and dinner buffets are served at the restaurant, and half-board rates are available, though reviews are mediocre when it comes to food. There's also a connected bar. Additionally, the outdoor pool is a bit cramped and shaded most of the day. There's not much for the little ones here, so families with children may want to check out the Jardim do Vau, which has an outdoor playground, kids club, and indoor and outdoor pools.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel da Rocha

Scene

Sharp, modern hotel with stylish interiors that's best for low-maintenance couples

Dating back to 1910, when it opened as one of the first vacation accommodations of the Algarve, this hotel is now housed in a nine-story white-washed modern building with glass balconies across all sides. It's a refreshingly up-to-date welcome that's delivered on throughout the hotel, even though the overall package is simple and best for low-maintenance travelers. Like the rest of the hotel, the spacious lobby is modern and sleek, with a white-on-white motif that's only interrupted by a red accent wall behind the long black reception desk. Seating is on black leather arm chairs, and black sculptures and green potted plants spice things up a bit. Given it's pleasant style, this is one of the better choices in the Portimao area, though features are limited and the pool is a disappointment. As such, it's attractive to couples, who are the most frequent guests. Families also stay here, but there's not much for the kids.

Location

Excellent location in Portimao's hotel zone, across the street from Praia da Rocha

This hotel is located in the touristy hotel zone of Portimao, across the street from gorgeous Praia da Rocha. With a pedestrian zone, it provides easy access to many restaurants, bars, pubs, and shops, and there's a nearby supermarket. Guests can walk to the Fort of Santa Catarina in about 10 minutes. Those wanting to explore the region will want a car. It's a five-minute drive to downtown Portimao, which has a slightly scruffy, but authentically Portuguese vibe, and charming Ferragudo is 15 minutes away by car. The popular Slide and Splash water park is about 20 minutes away by car, and Algarve International Autodrome race track is a 30-minute drive. Faro Airport is just under an hour away by car, and Lisbon's airport is about two-and-a-half hours away.

Rooms

Spacious, modern suites with kitchenettes and furnished balconies, some with exceptional sea views

The hotel's modern suites all have furnished balconies, with views of the sea, or the city of Portimao and the Monchique Mountains. Although they are all labeled suites, many only occupy a single room, with a half wall separating the sleeping area from the living and dining area. All are quite spacious, with floor plans starting at 41 square meters (441 square feet). Decor is upmarket and attractive, with tall, dark wooden headboards and sleek contemporary furniture. Seating is on black leather sofa beds and chairs. The style is minimalistic overall, but pale blue accent walls add a shimmer of color to the mostly neutral spaces. A bold pop of color is also found on the red backsplashes and countertops in the kitchenettes, which offer mini-fridges, sinks, kettles for tea and coffee, and microwaves, plus dishes and cutlery. Some have cook tops. Other amenities include air-conditioning, two flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi and safes. Guests in Suites Deluxe are welcomed with a fruit basket and bottled water. Bathrooms are modern and sleek, and come with bidets, hairdryers, shower/tub combos, and toiletries.

Features

Buffet restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, bar, outdoor pool, fitness center, internet station, free Wi-Fi

While the quality of the rooms here is quite nice compared to other local options, the features are a bit limited and don't impress too much. The Grand Caffe Restaurant and Bar serves buffets for breakfast and dinner daily. Half-board rates are available, though food gets mediocre reviews. The space is modern and bold, with a red and black color scheme. Oversized abstract poppies cover one wall behind the buffet, and a red accent wall highlights another. The bar also is backed by a red wall, with white bar stools in front. A pool table and a wall-mounted TV provide entertainment.

The rectangular outdoor pool is a bit cramped, but it's suitable for swimming short laps. White lounge chairs and umbrellas surround it on a small deck. A few potted trees provide a bit of ambiance, but it's a rather stark space overall, and it's shaded most of the day. The wide, sandy beach is across the street, accessed via a long wooden walkway. Beach towels are available at the hotel for a deposit. Lounge chairs and umbrellas can be rented on the beach.

A fitness center offers cardio and weight training machines, as well as free weights and exercise balls, though it's really only suitable for a basic workout. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and two computers are set up in the lobby for guests to use. Pets are not allowed.
